1 One day Jonathan, son of Saul, said to his armor-bearer, "Come let us go over to the Philistine outpost on the other side." But he did not inform his father.	1 Un día, Jonatán, hijo de Saúl, dijo a su escudero: «Ven, vamos a cruzar hasta la avanzadilla de los filisteos que están en este paso», pero nada dijo a su padre.
2 (Saul's command post was under the pomegranate tree near the threshing floor on the outskirts of Geba; those with him numbered about six hundred men.	2 Saúl estaba situado en el límite de Gueba, bajo el granado que está cerca de la era, y las gentes que estaban con él eran como unos seiscientos hombres.
3 Ahijah, son of Ahitub, brother of Ichabod, who was the son of Phinehas, son of Eli, the priest of the LORD at Shiloh, was wearing the ephod.) Nor did the soldiers know that Jonathan had gone.	3 Ajías, hijo de Ajitub, hermano de Ikabod, hijo de Pinjás, hijo de Elí, sacerdote de Yahveh en Silo, llevaba el efod. 4 Flanking the ravine through which Jonathan intended to get over to the Philistine outpost there was a rocky crag on each side, one called Bozez, the other Seneh.	4 En el paso que Jonatán intentaba franquear para llegar a la avanzadilla de los filisteos, hay un picacho por un lado y un picacho por el otro. 6 Jonathan said to his armor-bearer: "Come let us go over to that outpost of the uncircumcised. Perhaps the LORD will help us, because it is no more difficult for the LORD to grant victory through a few than through many."	6 Jonatán dijo a su escudero: «Ven, crucemos hasta la avanzadilla de esos incircuncisos. Acaso Yahveh haga algo por nosotros, porque nada impide a Yahveh dar la victoria con pocos o con muchos».
7 His armor-bearer replied, "Do whatever you are inclined to do; I will match your resolve."	7 Su escudero respondió: «Haz todo lo que tu corazón te dicte. Por mi parte estoy contigo, a tu voluntad».
8 Jonathan continued: "We shall go over to those men and show ourselves to them.	8 Jonatán dijo: «Vamos a pasar hacia esa gente y nos haremos ver de ellos.
9 If they say to us, 'Stay there until we can come to you,' we shall stop where we are; we shall not go up to them.	9 Si nos dicen: “¡Alto ahí! hasta que lleguemos a vosotros”, nos quedaremos en el sitio y no subiremos a ellos.
10 But if they say, 'Come up to us,' we shall go up, because the LORD has delivered them into our grasp. That will be our sign."	10 Pero si nos dicen: “Subid hacia nosotros,” subiremos, porque Yahveh los ha entregado en nuestras manos; esto nos servirá de señal».
11 Accordingly, the two of them appeared before the outpost of the Philistines, who said, "Look, some Hebrews are coming out of the holes where they have been hiding."	11 Cuando se dejaron ver de la avanzadilla de los filisteos, éstos dijeron: «Mirad los hebreos que salen de los escondrijos donde se habían metido».
12 The men of the outpost called to Jonathan and his armor-bearer. "Come up here," they said, "and we will teach you a lesson." So Jonathan said to his armor-bearer, "Climb up after me, for the LORD has delivered them into the grasp of Israel."	12 Y la gente de la avanzadilla, dirigiéndose a Jonatán y a su escudero, dijeron: «Subid hacia nosotros, que os vamos a enseñar algo». Entonces Jonatán dijo a su escudero: «Sube detrás de mí, pues Yahveh los ha entregado en manos de Israel».
13 Jonathan clambered up with his armor-bearer behind him; as the Philistines turned to flee him, he cut them down, and his armor-bearer followed him and finished them off.	13 Subió Jonatán ayudándose de pies y manos, y su escudero le seguía. Caían los filisteos ante Jonatán y detrás de él su escudero los iba rematando.
14 In this first exploit Jonathan and his armor-bearer slew about twenty men within half a furlong.	14 Este primer estrago que hicieron Jonatán y su escudero fue de una veintena de hombres...
15 Then panic spread to the army and to the countryside, and all the soldiers, including the outpost and the raiding parties, were terror-stricken. The earth also shook, so that the panic was beyond human endurance.	15 Cundió el terror en el campo y en el campamento y en la gente toda; la avanzadilla y los cuerpos de descubierta fueron presa del espanto, la tierra tembló y hubo un terror de Dios.
16 The lookouts of Saul in Geba of Benjamin saw that the enemy camp had scattered and were running about in all directions.	16 Los escuchas de Saúl que estaban en Gueba de Benjamín vieron que el campamento se agitaba de un lado para otro,
17 Saul said to those around him, "Count the troops and find out if any of us are missing." When they had investigated, they found Jonathan and his armor-bearer missing.	17 y Saúl dijo a las tropas que estaban con él: «Pasad revista y ved quién se ha marchado de los nuestros». Se pasó revista y vieron que faltaban Jonatán y su escudero.
18 Saul then said to Ahijah, "Bring the ephod here." (Ahijah was wearing the ephod in front of the Israelites at that time.)	18 Entonces Saúl dijo a Ajías: «Trae el efod», porque este era el que llevaba el efod en presencia de Israel.
19 While Saul was speaking to the priest, the tumult in the Philistine camp kept increasing. So he said to the priest, "Withdraw your hand."	19 Pero mientras Saúl hablaba al sacerdote, el tumulto del campamento filisteo iba creciendo y Saúl dijo al sacerdote: «Retira tu mano».
20 And Saul and all his men shouted and rushed into the fight, where the Philistines, wholly confused, were thrusting swords at one another.	20 Saúl y toda la tropa que estaba con él se reunieron y llegaron al campo de batalla, y he aquí que la espada de cada uno se volvía contra el otro, ¡un enorme desconcierto!
21 In addition, the Hebrews who had previously sided with the Philistines and had gone up with them to the camp, turned to join the Israelites under Saul and Jonathan.	21 Los hebreos que de antes estaban al servicio de los filisteos y que habían subido con ellos al campamento, también desertaron y se pasaron a los israelitas que estaban con Saúl y Jonatán.
22 Likewise, all the Israelites who were hiding in the hill country of Ephraim, on hearing that the Philistines were fleeing, pursued them in the rout.	22 Todos los israelitas que se habían escondido en la montaña de Efraím, al saber que los filisteos huían, los persiguieron hostigándolos.
23 Thus the LORD saved Israel that day. The battle continued past Beth-horon;	23 Aquel día Yahveh dio la victoria a Israel. El combate se extendió más allá de Bet Jorón.
24 the whole people, about ten thousand combatants, were with Saul, and there was scattered fighting in every town in the hill country of Ephraim. And Saul swore a very rash oath that day, putting the people under this ban: "Cursed be the man who takes food before evening, before I am able to avenge myself on my enemies." So none of the people tasted food.	24 Los hombres de Israel estaban en gran apuro aquel día y Saúl pronunció una imprecación sobre el pueblo: «Maldito el hombre que coma algo antes del anochecer, antes que me haya vengado de mis enemigos». Y nadie del pueblo probó bocado.
25 Indeed, there was a honeycomb lying on the ground,	25 Había, pues, un panal de miel por el suelo,
26 and when the soldiers came to the comb the swarm had left it; yet no one would raise a hand to his mouth from it, because the people feared the oath.	26 y el pueblo llegó al panal cuando la miel estaba destilando, pero nadie se llevó la mano a su boca, porque el pueblo temía la imprecación.
27 Jonathan, who had not heard that his father had put the people under oath, thrust out the end of the staff he was holding and dipped in into the honey. Then he raised it to his mouth and his eyes lit up.	27 Jonatán no había oído la imprecación que su padre había pronunciado sobre el pueblo y alargó la punta de la vara que tenía en la mano, la metió en el panal y después llevó la mano a su boca y le brillaron los ojos.
28 At this one of the soldiers spoke up: "Your father put the people under a strict oath, saying, 'Cursed be the man who takes food this day!' As a result the people are weak."	28 Uno del pueblo le habló diciendo: «Tu padre ha pronunciado solemnemente esta imprecación sobre el pueblo; ha dicho “Maldito el hombre que coma hoy algo.”»
29 Jonathan replied: "My father brings trouble to the land. Look how bright my eyes are from this small taste of honey I have had.	29 Jonatán respondió: «Mi padre ha causado un trastorno al país. Ved cómo tengo los ojos más brillantes por haber tomado este poco de miel.
30 What is more, if the people had eaten freely today of their enemy's booty when they came across it, would not the slaughter of the Philistines by now have been the greater for it?"	30 Pues si la tropa hubiese comido hoy del botín tomado al enemigo ¿no hubiera sido mayor el estrago de los filisteos?»
31 After the Philistines were routed that day from Michmash to Aijalon, the people were completely exhausted.	31 Aquel día fueron batidos los filisteos desde Mikmás hasta Ayyalón y la gente quedó extenuada.
32 So they pounced upon the spoil and took sheep, oxen and calves, slaughtering them on the ground and eating the flesh with blood.	32 La tropa se arrojó sobre el botín y tomando ganado menor, bueyes y terneros, los immoló sobre el suelo y lo comieron con la sangre.
33 Informed that the people were sinning against the LORD by eating the flesh with blood, Saul said: "You have broken faith. Roll a large stone here for me."	33 Avisaron a Saúl: «El pueblo está pecando contra Yahveh comiendo la sangre». El entonces dijo: «Habéis sido infieles. Rodadme hasta aquí una piedra grande».
34 He continued: "Mingle with the people and tell each of them to bring his ox or his sheep to me. Slaughter it here and then eat, but you must not sin against the LORD by eating the flesh with blood." So everyone brought to the LORD whatever ox he had seized, and they slaughtered them there;	34 Luego dijo: «Repartíos entre el pueblo y decidles: que cada uno traiga su buey o su carnero; los immolaréis aquí y comeréis, sin pecar contra Yahveh por comerlo con sangre». Todos los hombres llevaron cada cual lo que tenía aquella noche y lo immolaron allí.
35 and Saul built an altar to the LORD--this was the first time he built an altar to the LORD.	35 Alzó Saúl un altar a Yahveh; este fue el primer altar que edificó.
36 Then Saul said, "Let us go down in pursuit of the Philistines by night, to plunder among them until daybreak and to kill them all off." They replied, "Do what you think best." But the priest said, "Let us consult God."	36 Saúl dijo: «Bajemos durante la noche en persecución de los filisteos y saqueémoslos hasta el amanecer; no dejaremos ni un solo hombre». Le respondieron: «Haz lo que mejor te parezca». Pero el sacerdote dijo: «Acerquémonos aquí a Dios».
37 So Saul inquired of God: "Shall I go down in pursuit of the Philistines? Will you deliver them into the power of Israel?" But he received no answer on this occasion.	37 Consultó Saúl a Dios: «¿Bajaré en persecución de los filisteos? ¿Los entregarás en manos de Israel?» Pero no respondió en aquella ocasión.
38 Saul then said, "Come here, all officers of the army. We must investigate and find out how this sin was committed today.	38 Entonces dijo Saúl: «Acercaos aquí todos los principales del pueblo. Investigad en qué ha consistido el pecado de hoy.
39 As the LORD lives who has given victory to Israel, even if my son Jonathan has committed it, he shall surely die!" But none of the people answered him.	39 ¡Vive Yahveh! que ha salvado a Israel, que aunque se trate de mi hijo Jonatán, morirá sin remisión». Nadie del pueblo se atrevió a responderle.
40 So he said to all Israel, "Stand on one side, and I and my son Jonathan will stand on the other." The people responded, "Do what you think best."	40 Dijo a todo Israel: «Poneos a un lado, y yo y mi hijo Jonatán nos pondremos al otro», y el pueblo respondió a Saúl: «Haz lo que mejor te parezca».
41 And Saul said to the LORD, the God of Israel: "Why did you not answer your servant this time? If the blame for this resides in me or my son Jonathan, LORD, God of Israel, respond with Urim; but if this guilt is in your people Israel, respond with Thummim." Jonathan and Saul were designated, and the people went free.	41 Dijo entonces Saúl: «Yahveh Dios de Israel, ¿por qué no respondes hoy a tu siervo? Si el pecado es mío o de mi hijo Jonatán, Yahveh Dios de Israel, da urim; si el pecado es de tu pueblo Israel, da tummim». Fueron señalado Saúl y Jonatán, quedando libre el pueblo.
42 Saul then said, "Cast lots between me and my son Jonathan." And Jonathan was designated.	42 Saúl dijo: «Sortead entre mi hijo Jonatán y yo»; y fue señalado Jonatán.
43 Saul said to Jonathan, "Tell me what you have done." Jonathan replied, "I only tasted a little honey from the end of the staff I was holding. Am I to die for this?"	43 Dijo entonces Saúl a Jonatán: «Cuéntame lo que has hecho». Jonatán respondió: «No he hecho más que probar un poco de miel con la punta de la vara que tenía en la mano. Estoy dispuesto a morir».
44 Saul said, "May God do thus and so to me if you do not indeed die, Jonathan!"	44 Saúl replicó: «Que Dios me haga esto y me añada esto otro si no mueres, Jonatán».
45 But the army said to Saul: "Is Jonathan to die, though it was he who brought Israel this great victory? This must not be! As the LORD lives, not a single hair of his head shall fall to the ground, for God was with him in what he did today!" Thus the soldiers were able to rescue Jonathan from death.	45 Pero el pueblo dijo a Saúl: «¿Es que va a morir Jonatán siendo él quien ha conseguido esta gran victoria en Israel? ¡Dios nos libre! ¡Vive Yahveh! que no caerá en tierra ni un cabello de su cabeza, porque con ayuda de Dios lo hizo». Así rescató el pueblo a Jonatán y no murió.
46 After that Saul gave up the pursuit of the Philistines, who returned to their own territory.	46 Regresó Saúl de la persecución de los filisteos y los filisteos alcanzaron su país.
47 After taking over the kingship of Israel, Saul waged war on all their surrounding enemies--Moab, the Ammonites, Aram, Beth-rehob, the king of Zobah, and the Philistines. Wherever he turned, he was successful	47 Cuando Saúl se constituyó rey sobre Israel guerreó por todas partes contre todos sus enemigos: contra Moab, los ammonitas, Edom, el rey de Sobá y los filisteos; doquiera se dirigía resultaba vencedor.
48 and fought bravely. He defeated Amalek and delivered Israel from the hands of those who were plundering them.	48 Hizo proezas de valor, batió a los amalecitas y libró a Israel del poder de los que le saqueaban.
49 The sons of Saul were Jonathan, Ishvi, and Malchishua; his two daughters were named, the elder, Merob, and the younger, Michal.	49 Los hijos de Saúl fueron: Jonatán, Isyó y Malki Súa. Los nombres de sus dos hijas eran: Merab la mayor y Mikal la más pequeña.
50 Saul's wife, who was named Ahinoam, was the daughter of Ahimaaz. The name of his general was Abner, son of Saul's uncle, Ner;	50 La mujer de Saúl se llamaba Ajinoam, hija de Ajimaas. El jefe de su ejército se llamaba Abner, hijo de Ner, tío de Saúl:
51 Kish, Saul's father, and Ner, Abner's father, were sons of Abiel.	51 Quis, padre de Saúl, y Ner, padre de Abner, eran hijos de Abiel.
52 An unremitting war was waged against the Philistines during Saul's lifetime. When Saul saw any strong or brave man, he took him into his service.	52 Hubo una guerra encarnizada contra los filisteos toda la vida de Saúl. En cuanto Saúl veía un hombre fuerte y valeroso, se lo incorporaba.
