1 Once in the time of the judges there was a famine in the land; so a man from Bethlehem of Judah departed with his wife and two sons to reside on the plateau of Moab.	1 No tempo dum juiz, quando os juizes governavam, houve fome naquela terra. Um homem partiu de Belém de Judá, para ir habitar como forasteiro no país de Moab, com sua mulher e dois filhos.
2 The man was named Elimelech, his wife Naomi, and his sons Mahlon and Chilion; they were Ephrathites from Bethlehem of Judah. Some time after their arrival on the Moabite plateau,	2 Chamava-se ele Elimelec, e sua mulher Noemi; os dois filhos chamavam-se, um Maalon, e o outro Quelion; eram Efrateus de Belém de Judá. Chegados ao país dos Moabitas, aí moraram.
3 Elimelech, the husband of Naomi, died, and she was left with her two sons,	3 Elimelec, marido de Noemi, morreu, e ela ficou com os filhos,
4 who married Moabite women, one named Orpah, the other Ruth. When they had lived there about ten years,	4 os quais casaram com mulheres Moabitas, das quais uma se chamava Orfa, e a outra Rute. Viveram lá dez anos,
5 both Mahlon and Chilion died also, and the woman was left with neither her two sons nor her husband.	5 e morreram ambos, a saber, Maalon e Quelion. Assim a mulher ficou privada dos dois filhos e do marido.
6 She then made ready to go back from the plateau of Moab because word reached her there that the LORD had visited his people and given them food.	6 Então a mulher levantou-se, a fim de voltar da terra de Moab para a sua pátria com as suas duas noras, porque ouviu dizer que o Senhor tinha olhado para o seu povo, e lhe tinha dado pão.
7 She and her two daughters-in-law left the place where they had been living. Then as they were on the road back to the land of Judah,	7 Saiu pois do lugar da sua peregrinação com as suas duas noras; indo já no caminho de volta para a terra de Judá,
8 Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, "Go back, each of you, to your mother's house! May the LORD be kind to you as you were to the departed and to me!	8 disse para elas: Ide para casa de vossa mãe, o Senhor use convosco de misericórdia, como vós usastes com os que morreram e comigo.
9 May the LORD grant each of you a husband and a home in which you will find rest." She kissed them good-bye, but they wept with loud sobs,	9 Ele vos faça encontrar paz nas casas dos maridos, com quem tiverdes a sorte de casar. E beijou-as. Elas em alta voz começaram a chorar
10 and told her they would return with her to her people.	10 e a dizer: Nós iremos contigo para o teu povo.
11 "Go back, my daughters!" said Naomi. "Why should you come with me? Have I other sons in my womb who may become your husbands?	11 Ela respondeu-lhes: Ide, minhas filhas; porque vindes comigo? Porventura tenho eu ainda filhos no meu ventre, para que possais esperar de mim maridos?
12 Go back, my daughters! Go, for I am too old to marry again. And even if I could offer any hopes, or if tonight I had a husband or had borne sons,	12 Andai, minhas filhas, ide-vos, porque já estou velha demais para me voltar a casar. Ainda que eu pudesse conceber esta mesma noite, e dar à luz filhos,
13 would you then wait and deprive yourselves of husbands until those sons grew up? No, my daughters! my lot is too bitter for you, because the LORD has extended his hand against me."	13 irieis esperar até que crescessem e chegassem aos anos da puberdade? Deixaríeis de tornar a casar? Não (continueis), minhas filhas, vos peço, porque a vossa angústia custa-me muito, e a mão do Senhor está levantada contra mim.
14 Again they sobbed aloud and wept; and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law good-bye, but Ruth stayed with her.	14 Elas, levantando a voz, começaram de novo a chorar. Orfa beijou a sua sogra, e foi-se. Rute porém ficou com sua sogra.
15 "See now!" she said, "your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and her god. Go back after your sister-in-law!"	15 Noemi disse-lhe: A tua cunhada voltou para o seu povo e para o seu deus; vai com ela.
16 But Ruth said, "Do not ask me to abandon or forsake you! for wherever you go I will go, wherever you lodge I will lodge, your people shall be my people, and your God my God.	16 Rute respondeu: Não insistas comigo para que te deixe e me vá, porque para onde tu fores, irei também eu, e onde quer que morares, morarei eu também. O teu povo será o meu povo, e o teu Deus o meu Deus.
17 Wherever you die I will die, and there be buried. May the LORD do so and so to me, and more besides, if aught but death separates me from you!"	17 Na terra que te receber, quando morreres, nessa morrerei eu também e aí terei o meu sepulcro. O Senhor me castigue duramente, se outra coisa, que não for a morte, me separar de ti.
18 Naomi then ceased to urge her, for she saw she was determined to go with her.	18 Vendo pois Noemi que Rute estava firmemente resolvida a ir com ela, não a quis mais contradizer, nem persuadir-lhe que voltasse para os seus.
19 So they went on together till they reached Bethlehem. On their arrival there, the whole city was astir over them, and the women asked, "Can this be Naomi?"
20 But she said to them, "Do not call me Naomi. Call me Mara, for the Almighty has made it very bitter for me.	20 Ela disse-lhes: Não me chameis Noemi (isto é, formosa), mas chamai-me Mara (isto é, amarga), porque o Omnipotente me encheu de extrema amargura.
21 I went away with an abundance, but the LORD has brought me back destitute. Why should you call me Naomi, since the LORD has pronounced against me and the Almighty has brought evil upon me?"	21 Eu sai daqui cheia (de felicidade com meu marido e filhos), e o Senhor fez-me voltar vazia. Por que me chamais pois Noemi, tendo-me o Senhor humilhado, e o Omnipotente afligido?
22 Thus it was that Naomi returned with the Moabite daughter-in-law, Ruth, who accompanied her back from the plateau of Moab. They arrived in Bethlehem at the beginning of the barley harvest.	22 Foi Noemi com Rute Moabita, sua nora, da terra da sua peregrinação, e voltou para Belém, quando se começava a segar as cevadas.
