NEW AMERICAN BIBLENOVA VULGATA
Once in the time of the judges there was a famine in the land; so a man from Bethlehem of Judah departed with his wife and two sons to reside on the plateau of Moab.1 In diebus, quando iudices praeerant, facta est fames in ter ra. Abiitque homo de Bethlehem Iudae, ut peregrinaretur in regione Moabitide cum uxore sua ac duobus liberis.
The man was named Elimelech, his wife Naomi, and his sons Mahlon and Chilion; they were Ephrathites from Bethlehem of Judah. Some time after their arrival on the Moabite plateau,2 Ipse vocabatur Elimelech et uxor eius Noemi et duo filii alter Mahalon et alter Chelion Ephrathaei de Bethlehem Iudae. Ingressique regionem Moabitidem morabantur ibi.
Elimelech, the husband of Naomi, died, and she was left with her two sons,3 Et mortuus est Elimelech maritus Noemi, remansitque ipsa cum filiis,
who married Moabite women, one named Orpah, the other Ruth. When they had lived there about ten years,4 qui acceperunt uxores Moabitidas, quarum una vocabatur Orpha, altera Ruth; manseruntque ibi decem fere annis.
both Mahlon and Chilion died also, and the woman was left with neither her two sons nor her husband.5 Et ambo mortui sunt, Mahalon videlicet et Chelion; remansitque mulier orbata duobus liberis ac marito.
She then made ready to go back from the plateau of Moab because word reached her there that the LORD had visited his people and given them food.6 Et surrexit, ut in patriam pergeret cum utraque nuru sua de regione Moabitide; audierat enim quod respexisset Dominus populum suum et dedisset eis escas.
She and her two daughters-in-law left the place where they had been living. Then as they were on the road back to the land of Judah,7 Egressa est itaque de loco peregrinationis suae cum utraque nuru et, iam in via posita revertendi in terram Iudae,
Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, "Go back, each of you, to your mother's house! May the LORD be kind to you as you were to the departed and to me!8 dixit ad eas: “ Ite in domum matris vestrae; faciat Dominus vobiscum misericordiam, sicut fecistis cum mortuis et mecum:
May the LORD grant each of you a husband and a home in which you will find rest." She kissed them good-bye, but they wept with loud sobs,9 det vobis invenire requiem in domibus virorum, quos sortiturae estis ”. Et osculata est eas. Quae elevata voce flere coeperunt
and told her they would return with her to her people.10 et dicere: “ Tecum pergemus ad populum tuum ”.
"Go back, my daughters!" said Naomi. "Why should you come with me? Have I other sons in my womb who may become your husbands?11 Quibus illa respondit: “ Revertimini, filiae meae; cur venitis mecum? Num ultra habeo filios in utero meo, ut viros ex me sperare possitis?
Go back, my daughters! Go, for I am too old to marry again. And even if I could offer any hopes, or if tonight I had a husband or had borne sons,12 Revertimini, filiae meae, abite; iam enim senectute confecta sum nec apta vinculo coniugali; etiamsi possem hac nocte concipere et parere filios,
would you then wait and deprive yourselves of husbands until those sons grew up? No, my daughters! my lot is too bitter for you, because the LORD has extended his hand against me."13 numquid exspectare velitis et abstinere vos a matrimonio, donec crescant et annos impleant pubertatis? Nolite, quaeso, filiae meae; quia amaritudo est mihi magis quam vobis, et egressa est manus Domini contra me ”.
Again they sobbed aloud and wept; and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law good-bye, but Ruth stayed with her.14 Elevata igitur voce, rursum flere coeperunt. Orpha osculata socrum est ac reversa; Ruth autem adhaesit socrui suae.
"See now!" she said, "your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and her god. Go back after your sister-in-law!"15 Cui dixit Noemi: “ En reversa est cognata tua ad populum suum et ad deos suos; vade cum ea”.
But Ruth said, "Do not ask me to abandon or forsake you! for wherever you go I will go, wherever you lodge I will lodge, your people shall be my people, and your God my God.16 Quae respondit: “Noli instare mihi, ut relinquam te et abeam; quocumque perrexeris, pergam; ubi morata fueris, et ego pariter morabor: populus tuus populus meus et Deus tuus Deus meus.
Wherever you die I will die, and there be buried. May the LORD do so and so to me, and more besides, if aught but death separates me from you!"17 Quae te morientem terra susceperit, in ea moriar ibique locum accipiam sepulturae. Haec mihi faciat Dominus et haec addat, si non sola mors me et te separaverit ”.
Naomi then ceased to urge her, for she saw she was determined to go with her.18 Videns ergo Noemi quod obstinato Ruth animo decrevisset secum pergere, adversari noluit nec ultra ad suos reditum persuadere.
So they went on together till they reached Bethlehem. On their arrival there, the whole city was astir over them, and the women asked, "Can this be Naomi?"19 Profectaeque sunt simul et venerunt in Bethlehem. Quibus urbem ingressis, tota urbs commota est super eas; dicebantque mulieres: “Haec est illa Noemi!”.
But she said to them, "Do not call me Naomi. Call me Mara, for the Almighty has made it very bitter for me.20 Quibus ait: “Ne vocetis me Noemi (id est Pulchram), sed vocate me Mara (hoc est Amaram), quia valde me amaritudine replevit Omnipotens.
I went away with an abundance, but the LORD has brought me back destitute. Why should you call me Naomi, since the LORD has pronounced against me and the Almighty has brought evil upon me?"21 Egressa sum plena, et vacuam reduxit me Dominus; cur igitur vocatis me Noemi, quam humiliavit Dominus, et afflixit Omnipotens? ”.
Thus it was that Naomi returned with the Moabite daughter-in-law, Ruth, who accompanied her back from the plateau of Moab. They arrived in Bethlehem at the beginning of the barley harvest.22 Venit ergo Noemi cum Ruth Moabitide nuru sua de terra peregrinationis suae ac reversa est in Bethlehem, quando hordea metere incipiebant.
