NEW AMERICAN BIBLEKING JAMES BIBLE
Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by command of God our savior and of Christ Jesus our hope,1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the commandment of God our Saviour, and Lord Jesus Christ, which is our hope;
to Timothy, my true child in faith: grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.2 Unto Timothy, my own son in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord.
I repeat the request I made of you when I was on my way to Macedonia, that you stay in Ephesus to instruct certain people not to teach false doctrines3 As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine,
or to concern themselves with myths and endless genealogies, which promote speculations rather than the plan of God that is to be received by faith.4 Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do.
The aim of this instruction is love from a pure heart, a good conscience, and a sincere faith.5 Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned:
Some people have deviated from these and turned to meaningless talk,6 From which some having swerved have turned aside unto vain jangling;
wanting to be teachers of the law, but without understanding either what they are saying or what they assert with such assurance.7 Desiring to be teachers of the law; understanding neither what they say, nor whereof they affirm.
We know that the law is good, provided that one uses it as law,8 But we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully;
with the understanding that law is meant not for a righteous person but for the lawless and unruly, the godless and sinful, the unholy and profane, those who kill their fathers or mothers, murderers,9 Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,
the unchaste, practicing homosexuals, kidnapers, liars, perjurers, and whatever else is opposed to sound teaching,10 For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine;
according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, with which I have been entrusted.11 According to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust.
I am grateful to him who has strengthened me, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he considered me trustworthy in appointing me to the ministry.12 And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry;
I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and an arrogant man, but I have been mercifully treated because I acted out of ignorance in my unbelief.13 Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief.
Indeed, the grace of our Lord has been abundant, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.14 And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.
This saying is trustworthy and deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. Of these I am the foremost.15 This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.
But for that reason I was mercifully treated, so that in me, as the foremost, Christ Jesus might display all his patience as an example for those who would come to believe in him for everlasting life.16 Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting.
To the king of ages, incorruptible, invisible, the only God, honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.17 Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.
I entrust this charge to you, Timothy, my child, in accordance with the prophetic words once spoken about you. Through them may you fight a good fight18 This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare;
by having faith and a good conscience. Some, by rejecting conscience, have made a shipwreck of their faith,19 Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck:
among them Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan to be taught not to blaspheme.20 Of whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander; whom I have delivered unto Satan, that they may learn not to blaspheme.
