Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by command of God our savior and of Christ Jesus our hope,1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the commandment of God our Savior, and of Christ Jesus our hope:
to Timothy, my true child in faith: grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.2 To Timothy, his beloved son in faith. Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father, and from Christ Jesus our Lord.
I repeat the request I made of you when I was on my way to Macedonia, that you stay in Ephesus to instruct certain people not to teach false doctrines3 As I desired thee to remain at Ephesus when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge some not to teach otherwise,
or to concern themselves with myths and endless genealogies, which promote speculations rather than the plan of God that is to be received by faith.4 Not to give heed to fables and endless genealogies: which furnish questions rather than the edification of God, which is in faith.
The aim of this instruction is love from a pure heart, a good conscience, and a sincere faith.5 Now the end of the commandment is charity, from a pure heart, and a good conscience, and an unfeigned faith.
Some people have deviated from these and turned to meaningless talk,6 From which things some going astray, are turned aside unto vain babbling:
wanting to be teachers of the law, but without understanding either what they are saying or what they assert with such assurance.7 Desiring to be teachers of the law, understanding neither the things they say, nor whereof they affirm.
We know that the law is good, provided that one uses it as law,8 But we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully:
with the understanding that law is meant not for a righteous person but for the lawless and unruly, the godless and sinful, the unholy and profane, those who kill their fathers or mothers, murderers,9 Knowing this, that the law is not made for the just man, but for the unjust and disobedient, for the ungodly, and for sinners, for the wicked and defiled, for murderers of fathers, and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,
the unchaste, practicing homosexuals, kidnapers, liars, perjurers, and whatever else is opposed to sound teaching,10 For fornicators, for them who defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and whatever other thing is contrary to sound doctrine,
according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, with which I have been entrusted.11 Which is according to the gospel of the glory of the blessed God, which hath been committed to my trust.
I am grateful to him who has strengthened me, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he considered me trustworthy in appointing me to the ministry.12 I give thanks who hath strengthened me, even to Christ Jesus our Lord, for that he hath counted me faithful, putting me in the ministry;
I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and an arrogant man, but I have been mercifully treated because I acted out of ignorance in my unbelief.13 Who before was a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and contumelious. But I obtained the mercy of God, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief.
Indeed, the grace of our Lord has been abundant, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.14 Now the grace of our Lord hath abounded exceedingly with faith and love, which is in Christ Jesus.
This saying is trustworthy and deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. Of these I am the foremost.15 A faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into this world to save sinners, of whom I am the chief.
But for that reason I was mercifully treated, so that in me, as the foremost, Christ Jesus might display all his patience as an example for those who would come to believe in him for everlasting life.16 But for this cause have I obtained mercy: that in me first Christ Jesus might shew forth all patience, for the information of them that shall believe in him unto life everlasting.
To the king of ages, incorruptible, invisible, the only God, honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.17 Now to the king of ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.
I entrust this charge to you, Timothy, my child, in accordance with the prophetic words once spoken about you. Through them may you fight a good fight18 This precept I commend to thee, O son Timothy; according to the prophecies going before on thee, that thou war in them a good warfare,
by having faith and a good conscience. Some, by rejecting conscience, have made a shipwreck of their faith,19 Having faith and a good conscience, which some rejecting have made shipwreck concerning the faith.
among them Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan to be taught not to blaspheme.20 Of whom is Hymeneus and Alexander, whom I have delivered up to Satan, that they may learn not to blaspheme.
