NEW AMERICAN BIBLEDOUAI-RHEIMS
Now in regard to spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be unaware.1 Now concerning spiritual things, my brethren, I would not have you ignorant.
You know how, when you were pagans, you were constantly attracted and led away to mute idols.2 You know that when you were heathens, you went to dumb idols, according as you were led.
Therefore, I tell you that nobody speaking by the spirit of God says, "Jesus be accursed." And no one can say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the holy Spirit.3 Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man, speaking by the Spirit of God, saith Anathema to Jesus. And no man can say the Lord Jesus, but by the Holy Ghost.
There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit;4 Now there are diversities of graces, but the same Spirit;
there are different forms of service but the same Lord;5 And there are diversities of ministries, but the same Lord;
there are different workings but the same God who produces all of them in everyone.6 And there are diversities of operations, but the same God, who worketh all in all.
To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit.7 And the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man unto profit.
To one is given through the Spirit the expression of wisdom; to another the expression of knowledge according to the same Spirit;8 To one indeed, by the Spirit, is given the word of wisdom: and to another, the word of knowledge, according to the same Spirit;
to another faith by the same Spirit; to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit;9 To another, faith in the same spirit; to another, the grace of healing in one Spirit;
to another mighty deeds; to another prophecy; to another discernment of spirits; to another varieties of tongues; to another interpretation of tongues.10 To another, the working of miracles; to another, prophecy; to another, the discerning of spirits; to another, diverse kinds of tongues; to another, interpretation of speeches.
But one and the same Spirit produces all of these, distributing them individually to each person as he wishes.11 But all these things one and the same Spirit worketh, dividing to every one according as he will.
As a body is one though it has many parts, and all the parts of the body, though many, are one body, so also Christ.12 For as the body is one, and hath many members; and all the members of the body, whereas they are many, yet are one body, so also is Christ.
For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free persons, and we were all given to drink of one Spirit.13 For in one Spirit were we all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Gentiles, whether bond or free; and in one Spirit we have all been made to drink.
Now the body is not a single part, but many.14 For the body also is not one member, but many.
If a foot should say, "Because I am not a hand I do not belong to the body," it does not for this reason belong any less to the body.15 If the foot should say, because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body ?
Or if an ear should say, "Because I am not an eye I do not belong to the body," it does not for this reason belong any less to the body.16 And if the ear should say, because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body ?
If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be?17 If the whole body were the eye, where would be the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where would be the smelling?
But as it is, God placed the parts, each one of them, in the body as he intended.18 But now God hath set the members every one of them in the body as it hath pleased him.
If they were all one part, where would the body be?19 And if they all were one member, where would be the body?
But as it is, there are many parts, yet one body.20 But now there are many members indeed, yet one body.
The eye cannot say to the hand, "I do not need you," nor again the head to the feet, "I do not need you."21 And the eye cannot say to the hand: I need not thy help; nor again the head to the feet: I have no need of you.
Indeed, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are all the more necessary,22 Yea, much more those that seem to be the more feeble members of the body, are more necessary.
and those parts of the body that we consider less honorable we surround with greater honor, and our less presentable parts are treated with greater propriety,23 And such as we think to be the less honourable members of the body, about these we put more abundant honour; and those that are our uncomely parts, have more abundant comeliness.
whereas our more presentable parts do not need this. But God has so constructed the body as to give greater honor to a part that is without it,24 But our comely parts have no need: but God hath tempered the body together, giving to that which wanted the more abundant honour,
so that there may be no division in the body, but that the parts may have the same concern for one another.25 That there might be no schism in the body; but the members might be mutually careful one for another.
If (one) part suffers, all the parts suffer with it; if one part is honored, all the parts share its joy.26 And if one member suffer any thing, all the members suffer with it; or if one member glory, all the members rejoice with it.
Now you are Christ's body, and individually parts of it.27 Now you are the body of Christ, and members of member.
Some people God has designated in the church to be, first, apostles; second, prophets; third, teachers; then, mighty deeds; then, gifts of healing, assistance, administration, and varieties of tongues.28 And God indeed hath set some in the church; first apostles, secondly prophets, thirdly doctors; after that miracles; then the graces of healing, helps, governments, kinds of tongues, interpretations of speeches.
Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work mighty deeds?29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all doctors?
Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret?30 Are all workers of miracles? Have all the grace of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret?
Strive eagerly for the greatest spiritual gifts. But I shall show you a still more excellent way.31 But be zealous for the better gifts. And I shew unto you yet a more excellent way.
