Acts of the Apostles 4

1 While they were still speaking to the people, the priests, the captain of the temple guard, and the Sadducees confronted them,	1 While they were stil talking to the people the priests came up to them, accompanied by the captain ofthe Temple and the Sadducees.
2 disturbed that they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead.	2 They were extremely annoyed at their teaching the people the resurrection from the dead by proclaimingthe resurrection of Jesus.
3 They laid hands on them and put them in custody until the next day, since it was already evening.	3 They arrested them, and, as it was already late, they kept them in prison till the next day.
4 But many of those who heard the word came to believe and (the) number of men grew to (about) five thousand.	4 But many of those who had listened to their message became believers; the total number of men hadnow risen to something like five thousand.
5 On the next day, their leaders, elders, and scribes were assembled in Jerusalem,	5 It happened that the next day the rulers, elders and scribes held a meeting in Jerusalem
6 with Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John, Alexander, and all who were of the high-priestly class.	6 with Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, Jonathan, Alexander and al the members of the high-priestlyfamilies.
7 They brought them into their presence and questioned them, "By what power or by what name have you done this?"	7 They made the prisoners stand in the middle and began to interrogate them, 'By what power, and bywhose name have you men done this?'
8 Then Peter, filled with the holy Spirit, answered them, "Leaders of the people and elders:	8 Then Peter, fil ed with the Holy Spirit, addressed them, 'Rulers of the people, and elders!
9 If we are being examined today about a good deed done to a cripple, namely, by what means he was saved,	9 If you are questioning us today about an act of kindness to a cripple and asking us how he was healed,
10 then all of you and all the people of Israel should know that it was in the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarean whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead; in his name this man stands before you healed.	10 you must know, all of you, and the whole people of Israel, that it is by the name of Jesus Christ theNazarene, whom you crucified, and God raised from the dead, by this name and by no other that this manstands before you cured.
11 He is 'the stone rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone.'	11 This is the stone which you, the builders, rejected but which has become the cornerstone. Only in himis there salvation;
12 There is no salvation through anyone else, nor is there any other name under heaven given to the human race by which we are to be saved."	12 for of al the names in the world given to men, this is the only one by which we can be saved.'
13 Observing the boldness of Peter and John and perceiving them to be uneducated, ordinary men, they were amazed, and they recognized them as the companions of Jesus.	13 They were astonished at the fearlessness shown by Peter and John, considering that they wereuneducated laymen; and they recognised them as associates of Jesus;
14 Then when they saw the man who had been cured standing there with them, they could say nothing in reply.	14 but when they saw the man who had been cured standing by their side, they could find no answer.
15 So they ordered them to leave the Sanhedrin, and conferred with one another, saying,	15 So they ordered them to stand outside while the Sanhedrin had a private discussion.
16 "What are we to do with these men? Everyone living in Jerusalem knows that a remarkable sign was done through them, and we cannot deny it.	16 'What are we going to do with these men?' they asked. 'It is obvious to everybody in Jerusalem that anotable miracle has been worked through them, and we cannot deny it.
17 But so that it may not be spread any further among the people, let us give them a stern warning never again to speak to anyone in this name."	17 But to stop the whole thing spreading any further among the people, let us threaten them against everspeaking to anyone in this name again.'
18 So they called them back and ordered them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.	18 So they cal ed them in and gave them a warning on no account to make statements or to teach in thename of Jesus.
19 Peter and John, however, said to them in reply, "Whether it is right in the sight of God for us to obey you rather than God, you be the judges.	19 But Peter and John retorted, 'You must judge whether in God's eyes it is right to listen to you and not toGod.
20 It is impossible for us not to speak about what we have seen and heard."	20 We cannot stop proclaiming what we have seen and heard.'
21 After threatening them further, they released them, finding no way to punish them, on account of the people who were all praising God for what had happened.	21 The court repeated the threats and then released them; they could not think of any way to punish them,since al the people were giving glory to God for what had happened.
22 For the man on whom this sign of healing had been done was over forty years old.	22 The man who had been miraculously cured was over forty years old.
23 After their release they went back to their own people and reported what the chief priests and elders had told them.	23 As soon as they were released they went to the community and told them everything the chief priestsand elders had said to them.
24 And when they heard it, they raised their voices to God with one accord and said, "Sovereign Lord, maker of heaven and earth and the sea and all that is in them,	24 When they heard it they lifted up their voice to God with one heart. 'Master,' they prayed, 'it is you who made sky and earth and sea, and everything in them;
25 you said by the holy Spirit through the mouth of our father David, your servant: 'Why did the Gentiles rage and the peoples entertain folly?	25 it is you who said through the Holy Spirit and speaking through our ancestor David, your servant: Whythis uproar among the nations, this impotent muttering of the peoples?
26 The kings of the earth took their stand and the princes gathered together against the Lord and against his anointed.'	26 Kings on earth take up position, princes plot together against the Lord and his Anointed.
27 Indeed they gathered in this city against your holy servant Jesus whom you anointed, Herod and Pontius Pilate, together with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel,	27 'This is what has come true: in this very city Herod and Pontius Pilate plotted together with the gentilenations and the peoples of Israel, against your holy servant Jesus whom you anointed,
28 to do what your hand and (your) will had long ago planned to take place.	28 to bring about the very thing that you in your strength and your wisdom had predetermined shouldhappen.
29 And now, Lord, take note of their threats, and enable your servants to speak your word with all boldness,	29 And now, Lord, take note of their threats and help your servants to proclaim your message with alfearlessness,
30 as you stretch forth (your) hand to heal, and signs and wonders are done through the name of your holy servant Jesus."	30 by stretching out your hand to heal and to work miracles and marvels through the name of your holyservant Jesus.'
31 As they prayed, the place where they were gathered shook, and they were all filled with the holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with boldness.	31 As they prayed, the house where they were assembled rocked. From this time they were all fil ed withthe Holy Spirit and began to proclaim the word of God fearlessly.
32 The community of believers was of one heart and mind, and no one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they had everything in common.	32 The whole group of believers was united, heart and soul; no one claimed private ownership of anypossessions, as everything they owned was held in common.
33 With great power the apostles bore witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great favor was accorded them all.	33 The apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus with great power, and they wereal accorded great respect.
34 There was no needy person among them, for those who owned property or houses would sell them, bring the proceeds of the sale,	34 None of their members was ever in want, as al those who owned land or houses would sel them, andbring the money from the sale of them,
35 and put them at the feet of the apostles, and they were distributed to each according to need.	35 to present it to the apostles; it was then distributed to any who might be in need.
36 Thus Joseph, also named by the apostles Barnabas (which is translated "son of encouragement"), a Levite, a Cypriot by birth,	36 There was a Levite of Cypriot origin called Joseph whom the apostles surnamed Barnabas (whichmeans 'son of encouragement').
37 sold a piece of property that he owned, then brought the money and put it at the feet of the apostles.	37 He owned a piece of land and he sold it and brought the money and presented it to the apostles.
