Deuteronomy 6

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	NEW JERUSALEM
1 "These then are the commandments, the statutes and decrees which the LORD, your God, has ordered that you be taught to observe in the land into which you are crossing for conquest,	1 'Such, then, are the commandments, the laws and the customs which Yahweh your God has instructedme to teach you, for you to observe in the country which you are on your way to possess.
2 so that you and your son and your grandson may fear the LORD, your God, and keep, throughout the days of your lives, all his statutes and commandments which I enjoin on you, and thus have long life.	2 And hence, if, throughout your lives, you fear Yahweh your God and keep al his laws andcommandments, which I am laying down for you today, you wil live long, you and your child and your grandchild.
3 Hear then, Israel, and be careful to observe them, that you may grow and prosper the more, in keeping with the promise of the LORD, the God of your fathers, to give you a land flowing with milk and honey.	3 Listen then, Israel, keep and observe what wil make you prosperous and numerous, as Yahweh, Godof your ancestors, has promised you, in giving you a country flowing with milk and honey.
4 "Hear, O Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD alone!	4 'Listen, Israel: Yahweh our God is the one, the only Yahweh.
5 Therefore, you shall love the LORD, your God, with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength.	5 You must love Yahweh your God with al your heart, with al your soul, with al your strength.
6 Take to heart these words which I enjoin on you today.	6 Let the words I enjoin on you today stay in your heart.
7 Drill them into your children. Speak of them at home and abroad, whether you are busy or at rest.	7 You shal tel them to your children, and keep on tel ing them, when you are sitting at home, when youare out and about, when you are lying down and when you are standing up;
8 Bind them at your wrist as a sign and let them be as a pendant on your forehead.	8 you must fasten them on your hand as a sign and on your forehead as a headband;
9 Write them on the doorposts of your houses and on your gates.	9 you must write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
10 "When the LORD, your God, brings you into the land which he swore to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, that he would give you, a land with fine, large cities that you did not build,	10 'When Yahweh has brought you into the country which he swore to your ancestors Abraham, Isaacand Jacob that he would give you, with great and prosperous cities you have not built,
11 with houses full of goods of all sorts that you did not garner, with cisterns that you did not dig, with vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant; and when, therefore, you eat your fill,	11 with houses full of good things you have not provided, with wel s you have not dug, with vineyards andolive trees you have not planted, and then, when you have eaten as much as you want,
12 take care not to forget the LORD, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that place of slavery.	12 be careful you do not forget Yahweh who has brought you out of Egypt, out of the place of slave-labour.
13 The LORD, your God, shall you fear; him shall you serve, and by his name shall you swear.	13 Yahweh your God is the one you must fear, him alone you must serve, his is the name by which youmust swear.
14 You shall not follow other gods, such as those of the surrounding nations,	14 'Do not fol ow other gods, gods of the peoples round you,
15 lest the wrath of the LORD, your God, flare up against you and he destroy you from the face of the land; for the LORD, your God, who is in your midst, is a jealous God.	15 for Yahweh your God among you is a jealous God; the wrath of Yahweh your God would blaze outagainst you, and he would wipe you off the face of the earth.
16 "You shall not put the LORD, your God, to the test, as you did at Massah.	16 Do not put Yahweh your God to the test as you tested him at Massah.
17 But keep the commandments of the LORD, your God, and the ordinances and statutes he has enjoined on you.	17 Keep the commandments of Yahweh your God, and his instructions and laws which he has laid downfor you,
18 Do what is right and good in the sight of the LORD, that you may, according to his word, prosper, and may enter in and possess the good land which the LORD promised on oath to your fathers,	18 and do what Yahweh regards as right and good, so that you may prosper and take possession of thefine country which Yahweh swore to give your ancestors,
19 thrusting all your enemies out of your way.	19 driving out your enemies before you; such was Yahweh's promise.
20 "Later on, when your son asks you what these ordinances, statutes and decrees mean which the LORD, our God, has enjoined on you,	20 'In times to come, when your child asks you, "What is the meaning of these instructions, laws andcustoms which Yahweh our God has laid down for you?"
21 you shall say to your son, 'We were once slaves of Pharaoh in Egypt, but the LORD brought us out of Egypt with his strong hand	21 you are to tel your child, "Once we were Pharaoh's slaves in Egypt, and Yahweh brought us out ofEgypt by his mighty hand.
22 and wrought before our eyes signs and wonders, great and dire, against Egypt and against Pharaoh and his whole house.	22 Before our eyes, Yahweh worked great and terrible signs and wonders against Egypt, againstPharaoh and his entire household.
23 He brought us from there to lead us into the land he promised on oath to our fathers, and to give it to us.	23 And he brought us out of there, to lead us into the country which he had sworn to our ancestors thathe would give us.
24 Therefore, the LORD commanded us to observe all these statutes in fear of the LORD, our God, that we may always have as prosperous and happy a life as we have today;	24 And Yahweh has commanded us to observe all these laws and to fear Yahweh our God, so as to behappy for ever and to survive, as we do to this day.
25 and our justice before the LORD, our God, is to consist in carefully observing all these commandments he has enjoined on us.'	25 For us, right living wil mean this: to keep and observe al these commandments in obedience toYahweh our God, as he has commanded us." '
