Deuteronomy 29

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 Moses summoned all Israel and said to them, "You have seen all that the LORD did in the land of Egypt before your very eyes to Pharaoh and all his servants and to all his land;	1 Moisés convocó a todo Israel, y le dijo: Ustedes han visto con sus propios ojos lo que el Señor hizo en Egipto al Faraón, a sus servidores y a todo su país:
2 the great testings your own eyes have seen, and those great signs and wonders.	2 Las grandes hazañas que ustedes mismos han presenciado, y aquellos signos y prodigios admirables.
3 But not even at the present day has the LORD yet given you a mind to understand, or eyes to see, or ears to hear.	3 Pero hasta el día de hoy, el Señor no les había dado inteligencia para entender, ni ojos para ver, ni oídos para oír.
4 'I led you for forty years in the desert. Your clothes did not fall from you in tatters nor your sandals from your feet;	4 Yo los hice caminar por el desierto durante cuarenta años, sin que se les gastara la ropa que llevaban puesta ni las sandalias que tenían en los pies.
5 bread was not your food, nor wine or beer your drink. Thus you should know that I, the LORD, am your God.'	5 No fue pan lo que comieron, ni vino u otro licor lo que bebieron, para que ustedes supieran que yo soy el Señor, su Dios.
6 When we came to this place, Sihon, king of Heshbon, and Og, king of Bashan, came out to engage us in battle, but we defeated them	6 Al llegar a este lugar, Sijón, rey de Jesbón, y Og, rey de Basán, nos salieron al encuentro para combatir, pero nosotros los derrotamos.
7 and took over their land, which we then gave as a heritage to the Reubenites, Gadites, and half the tribe of Manasseh.	7 Así conquistamos sus territorios y se los dimos en herencia a las tribus de Rubén y de Gad, y a la mitad de la tribu de Manasés.
8 Keep the terms of this covenant, therefore, and fulfill them, that you may succeed in whatever you do.	8 Por eso, observen fielmente las cláusulas de esta alianza y pónganlas en práctica, para prosperar en todas sus empresas.
9 "You are all now standing before the LORD, your God--your chiefs and judges, your elders and officials, and all of the men of Israel,	9 Hoy todos ustedes han comparecido ante el Señor, su Dios: los jefes con sus tribus, sus ancianos y sus escribas, todos los hombres de Israel
10 together with your wives and children and the aliens who live in your camp, down to those who hew wood and draw water for you--	10 con sus mujeres y sus hijos, y también los extranjeros que se han incorporado a sus campamentos, desde el leñador hasta el aguatero.
11 that you may enter into the covenant of the LORD, your God, which he concluded with you today under this sanction of a curse;	11 Todos están aquí para entrar en la alianza del Señor, tu Dios, esa alianza corroborada con una imprecación, que el Señor, tu Dios, hoy hace contigo,
12 so that he may now establish you as his people and he may be your God, as he promised you and as he swore to your fathers Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.	12 a fin de convertirte en su pueblo y ser tu Dios, como te lo ha prometido y como lo juró a tus padres, a Abraham, a Isaac y a Jacob.
13 But it is not with you alone that I am making this covenant, under this sanction of a curse;	13 Esta alianza, corroborada con una imprecación, no la hago sólo con ustedes.
14 it is just as much with those who are not here among us today as it is with those of us who are now here present before the LORD, our God.	14 La hago con aquel que hoy está aquí con nosotros delante del Señor nuestro Dios, y con aquel que no está.
15 "You know in what surroundings we lived in the land of Egypt and what we passed by in the nations we traversed,	15 Ustedes saben muy bien que nosotros estuvimos en Egipto, y que luego pasamos por varias otras naciones.
16 and you saw the loathsome idols of wood and stone, of gold and silver, that they possess.	16 Allí vieron los ídolos abominables y los fetiches que ellas tienen, y que no son más que madera y piedra, plata y otro.
17 Let there be, then, no man or woman, no clan or tribe among you, who would now turn away their hearts from the LORD, our God, to go and serve these pagan gods! Let there be no root that would bear such poison and wormwood among you.	17 ¡Que no haya entre ustedes ni hombres ni mujer, ni clan ni tribu, cuyo corazón se aparte hoy del Señor, nuestro Dios, para ir a servir a los dioses de esas naciones! ¡Que no haya entre ustedes una raíz que produzca hierbas venenosas o ajenjo!
18 If any such person, upon hearing the words of this curse, should beguile himself into thinking that he can safely persist in his stubbornness of heart, as though to sweep away both the watered soil and the parched ground,	18 Porque si alguien, al oír los términos de esa imprecación, se congratula diciendo: «Todo me irá bien aunque persista en mi obstinación, ya que el terreno regado no tiene más sed»,
19 the LORD will never consent to pardon him. Instead, the LORD'S wrath and jealousy will flare up against that man, and every curse mentioned in this book will alight on him. The LORD will blot out his name from under the heavens	19 el Señor no lo perdonará. Al contrario, la ira y los celos del Señor se encenderán contra ese hombre, hasta que cada una de las sanciones enumeradas en este Libro caigan sobre él, y el Señor borre su nombre de la tierra.
20 and will single him out from all the tribes of Israel for doom, in keeping with all the curses of the covenant inscribed in this book of the law.	20 El Señor lo apartará, para su desgracia, de todas las tribus de Israel, conforme a las sanciones de la alianza consignadas en el libro de esta Ley.
21 "Future generations, your own descendants who will rise up after you, as well as the foreigners who will come here from far-off lands, when they see the calamities of this land and the ills with which the LORD has smitten it--	21 Y las generaciones futuras –los niños que nacerán después de ustedes y los extranjeros que vendrán de tierras lejanas– verán las calamidades y las enfermedades que el Señor habrá infligido a ese país.
22 all its soil being nothing but sulphur and salt, a burnt-out waste, unsown and unfruitful, without a blade of grass, destroyed like Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the LORD overthrew in his furious wrath--	22 Y al ver todo su suelo devastado por el azufre y la sal, donde no se siembra ni crece nada ni brota ninguna hierba –como sucedió en la catástrofe de Sodoma y Gomorra, de Admá y Seboím, a las que él Señor destruyó en su ira y su furor–
23 they and all the nations will ask, 'Why has the LORD dealt thus with this land? Why this fierce outburst of wrath?'	23 Todas las naciones preguntarán: «¿Por qué el Señor trató así a esta tierra? ¿De dónde procede este enojo tan tremendo?»
24 And the answer will be, 'Because they forsook the covenant which the LORD, the God of their fathers, had made with them when he brought them out of the land of Egypt,	24 Y las mismas naciones responderán: «Porque abandonaron la alianza que el Señor, el Dios de sus padres, hizo con ellos cuando los hizo salir de Egipto.
25 and they went and served other gods and adored them, gods whom they did not know and whom he had not let fall to their lot:	25 Fueron a servir a otros dioses y a postrarse delante de ellos, a dioses que no conocían y que él no les había dado en suerte.
26 that is why the LORD was angry with this land and brought on it all the imprecations listed in this book;	26 Por eso el Señor se irritó contra este país y atrajo sobre él todas las maldiciones consignadas en este Libro.
27 in his furious wrath and tremendous anger the LORD uprooted them from their soil and cast them out into a strange land, where they are today.'	27 El Señor los arrancó de su suelo, con enojo, furia y gran indignación, y los deportó a otra tierra, como sucede todavía hoy.
28 (Both what is still hidden and what has already been revealed concern us and our descendants forever, that we may carry out all the words of this law.)	28 Las cosas ocultas conciernen al Señor, nuestro Dios pero las reveladas son para nosotros y para nuestros hijos, para que practiquemos siempre todas las palabras de esta Ley.
