Deuteronomy 17

1 "You shall not sacrifice to the LORD, your God, from the herd or from the flock an animal with any serious defect; that would be an abomination to the LORD, your God.	1 Tu ne présenteras pas à Yahvé ton Dieu un bœuf ou un mouton avec une tare, ou une offrande avariée, car Yahvé ton Dieu déteste cela.
2 "If there is found among you, in any one of the communities which the LORD, your God, gives you, a man or a woman who does evil in the sight of the LORD, your God, and transgresses his covenant,	2 Suppose qu’au milieu de toi, dans l’une des villes que Yahvé ton Dieu te donne, un homme, ou bien une femme, fait ce qui est mal aux yeux de Yahvé et est infidèle à son Alliance.
3 by serving other gods, or by worshiping the sun or the moon or any of the host of the sky, against my command;	3 Il s’en va servir d’autres dieux et il se prosterne devant eux, que ce soit le soleil, la lune ou toute l’armée des cieux (chose que je n’ai pas commandée),
4 and if, on being informed of it, you find by careful investigation that it is true and an established fact that this abomination has been committed in Israel:	4 et toi tu apprends la chose, tu en entends parler. Dans ce cas tu feras soigneusement ton enquête. Si cela est vrai, s’il est prouvé que cette chose que Yahvé déteste a été commise en Israël,
5 you shall bring the man (or woman) who has done the evil deed out to your city gates and stone him to death.	5 tu conduiras hors de la ville l’homme ou la femme qui a commis ce crime, et tu le lapideras jusqu’à ce qu’il meure.
6 The testimony of two or three witnesses is required for putting a person to death; no one shall be put to death on the testimony of only one witness.	6 Il faudra la déposition de deux ou de trois témoins pour condamner à mort; on ne le mettra pas à mort sur la parole d’un seul témoin.
7 At the execution, the witnesses are to be the first to raise their hands against him; afterward all the people are to join in. Thus shall you purge the evil from your midst.	7 Les témoins frapperont les premiers celui qui doit mourir, ensuite tout le peuple frappera à son tour; ainsi tu ôteras le mal du milieu de toi.
8 "If in your own community there is a case at issue which proves too complicated for you to decide, in a matter of bloodshed or of civil rights or of personal injury, you shall then go up to the place which the LORD, your God, chooses,	8 Si une affaire te paraît trop difficile à juger: meurtre, contestation, blessure, problème à l’intérieur de la ville, tu te lèveras et tu te rendras au lieu que Yahvé ton Dieu aura choisi.
9 to the levitical priests or to the judge who is in office at that time. They shall study the case and then hand down to you their decision.	9 Là, tu iras trouver (les prêtres lévites), le juge en fonction ce jour-là et tu les consulteras. On t’expliquera comment tu dois juger.
10 According to this decision that they give you in the place which the LORD chooses, you shall act, being careful to do exactly as they direct.	10 Dès lors, tu agiras exactement selon ce qu’ils t’auront dit en ce lieu que Yahvé a choisi. Tu veilleras à suivre exactement ce qu’ils t’auront dit.
11 You shall carry out the directions they give you and the verdict they pronounce for you, without turning aside to the right or to the left from the decision they hand down to you.	11 Tu agiras selon la loi qu’ils t’enseigneront et selon le jugement qu’ils prononceront; tu ne dévieras de leurs paroles ni à droite ni à gauche.
12 Any man who has the insolence to refuse to listen to the priest who officiates there in the ministry of the LORD, your God, or to the judge, shall die. Thus shall you purge the evil from your midst.	12 Celui qui n’en fera qu’à sa tête sans écouter le juge ou le prêtre qui est de service pour Yahvé son Dieu, mourra. Ainsi tu ôteras le mal d’Israël.
13 And all the people, on hearing of it, shall fear, and never again be so insolent.	13 Tous dans le peuple le sauront; ils craindront et cesseront d’agir sans aucun droit.
14 "When you have come into the land which the LORD, your God, is giving you, and have occupied it and settled in it, should you then decide to have a king over you like all the surrounding nations,	14 Lorsque tu seras entré dans le pays que Yahvé ton Dieu te donne, lorsque tu l’auras conquis et que tu y habiteras, tu diras peut-être: “Il faut que je me donne un roi comme toutes les nations qui vivent autour de moi.”
15 you shall set that man over you as your king whom the LORD, your God, chooses. He whom you set over you as king must be your kinsman; a foreigner, who is no kin of yours, you may not set over you.	15 Alors tu mettras à ta tête un roi que Yahvé ton Dieu aura choisi. Tu le prendras parmi tes frères; tu ne prendras pas pour régner sur toi un étranger, un homme qui n’est pas ton frère.
16 But he shall not have a great number of horses; nor shall he make his people go back again to Egypt to acquire them, against the LORD'S warning that you must never go back that way again.	16 Il ne faut pas que ton roi cherche toujours davantage de chevaux, il ne faut pas qu’il ramène le peuple en Égypte pour en avoir davantage, car Yahvé l’a bien dit: “Vous ne retournerez plus jamais par cette route-là.”
17 Neither shall he have a great number of wives, lest his heart be estranged, nor shall he accumulate a vast amount of silver and gold.	17 Il ne faut pas qu’il multiplie ses femmes, car elles détourneraient son cœur. Il ne faut pas qu’il recherche l’argent et l’or.
18 When he is enthroned in his kingdom, he shall have a copy of this law made from the scroll that is in the custody of the levitical priests.	18 Mais quand il sera assis sur le trône royal, il recopiera pour lui cette loi sur le livre des prêtres, des Lévites.
19 He shall keep it with him and read it all the days of his life that he may learn to fear the LORD, his God, and to heed and fulfill all the words of this law and these statutes.	19 Il l’aura sans cesse avec lui et il la lira tous les jours de sa vie. Ainsi il apprendra à craindre Yahvé son Dieu, à observer toutes les paroles de cette loi, tous ses commandements et à les mettre en pratique.
20 Let him not become estranged from his countrymen through pride, nor turn aside to the right or to the left from these commandments. Then he and his descendants will enjoy a long reign in Israel.	20 Ainsi il ne se croira pas supérieur à ses frères et il ne déviera pas des commandements, ni à droite, ni à gauche. Ainsi il aura un long règne en Israël, et ses fils également.
