Jesus again in reply spoke to them in parables, saying,1 Jesus tornou a falar-lhes por meio de parábolas:
"The kingdom of heaven may be likened to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son.2 The kingdom of the heavens has become like a king who made a wedding feast for his son,
He dispatched his servants to summon the invited guests to the feast, but they refused to come.3 and sent his bondmen to call the persons invited to the wedding feast, and they would not come.
A second time he sent other servants, saying, 'Tell those invited: "Behold, I have prepared my banquet, my calves and fattened cattle are killed, and everything is ready; come to the feast."'4 Again he sent other bondmen, saying, Say to the persons invited, Behold, I have prepared my dinner; my oxen and my fatted beasts are killed, and all things ready; come to the wedding feast.
Some ignored the invitation and went away, one to his farm, another to his business.5 But they made light of it, and went, one to his own land, and another to his commerce.
The rest laid hold of his servants, mistreated them, and killed them.6 And the rest, laying hold of his bondmen, ill-treated and slew {them}.
The king was enraged and sent his troops, destroyed those murderers, and burned their city.7 And {when} the king {heard of it he} was wroth, and having sent his forces, destroyed those murderers and burned their city.
Then he said to his servants, 'The feast is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy to come.8 Then he says to his bondmen, The wedding feast is ready, but those invited were not worthy;
Go out, therefore, into the main roads and invite to the feast whomever you find.'9 go therefore into the thoroughfares of the highways, and as many as ye shall find invite to the wedding feast.
The servants went out into the streets and gathered all they found, bad and good alike, and the hall was filled with guests.10 And those bondmen went out into the highways, and brought together all as many as they found, both evil and good; and the wedding feast was furnished with guests.
But when the king came in to meet the guests he saw a man there not dressed in a wedding garment.11 And the king, having gone in to see the guests, beheld there a man not clothed with a wedding garment.
He said to him, 'My friend, how is it that you came in here without a wedding garment?' But he was reduced to silence.12 And he says to him, {My} friend, how camest thou in here not having on a wedding garment? But he was speechless.
Then the king said to his attendants, 'Bind his hands and feet, and cast him into the darkness outside, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.'13 Then said the king to the servants, Bind him feet and hands, and take him away, and cast him out into the outer darkness: there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth.
Many are invited, but few are chosen."14 For many are called ones, but few chosen ones.
Then the Pharisees went off and plotted how they might entrap him in speech.15 And they send out to him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Teacher, we know that thou art true and teachest the way of God in truth, and carest not for any one, for thou regardest not men?s person;
They sent their disciples to him, with the Herodians, saying, "Teacher, we know that you are a truthful man and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. And you are not concerned with anyone's opinion, for you do not regard a person's status.16 tell us therefore what thou thinkest: Is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar, or not?
Tell us, then, what is your opinion: Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not?"17 But Jesus, knowing their wickedness, said, Why tempt ye me, hypocrites?
Knowing their malice, Jesus said, "Why are you testing me, you hypocrites?18 Shew me the money of the tribute. And they presented to him a denarius.
Show me the coin that pays the census tax." Then they handed him the Roman coin.19 And he says to them, Whose {is} this image and superscription?
He said to them, "Whose image is this and whose inscription?"20 They say to him, Caesar?s. Then he says to them, Pay then what is Caesar?s to Caesar, and what is God?s to God.
They replied, "Caesar's." At that he said to them, "Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God."21 And when they heard {him}, they wondered, and left him, and went away.
When they heard this they were amazed, and leaving him they went away.22 saying, Teacher, Moses said, If any one die, not having children, his brother shall marry his wife and shall raise up seed to his brother.
On that day Sadducees approached him, saying that there is no resurrection. They put this question to him,23 Now there were with us seven brethren; and the first having married died, and not having seed, left his wife to his brother.
saying, "Teacher, Moses said, 'If a man dies without children, his brother shall marry his wife and raise up descendants for his brother.'24 In like manner also the second and the third, unto the seven.
Now there were seven brothers among us. The first married and died and, having no descendants, left his wife to his brother.25 And last of all the woman also died.
The same happened with the second and the third, through all seven.26 In the resurrection therefore of which of the seven shall she be wife, for all had her?
Finally the woman died.27 And Jesus answering said to them, Ye err, not knowing the scriptures nor the power of God.
Now at the resurrection, of the seven, whose wife will she be? For they all had been married to her."28 For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are as angels of God in heaven.
Jesus said to them in reply, "You are misled because you do not know the scriptures or the power of God.29 Quanto à ressurreição dos mortos, não lestes o que Deus vos disse:
At the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage but are like the angels in heaven.30 Eu sou o Deus de Abraão, o Deus de Isaac e o Deus de Jacó {Ex 3,6}? Ora, ele não é Deus dos mortos, mas Deus dos vivos.
And concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was said to you by God,31 E, ouvindo esta doutrina, as turbas se enchiam de grande admiração.
'I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'? He is not the God of the dead but of the living."32 Sabendo os fariseus que Jesus reduzira ao silêncio os saduceus, reuniram-se
When the crowds heard this, they were astonished at his teaching.33 e um deles, doutor da lei, fez-lhe esta pergunta para pô-lo à prova:
When the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together,34 Mestre, qual é o maior mandamento da lei?
and one of them [a scholar of the law] tested him by asking,35 Respondeu Jesus: Amarás o Senhor teu Deus de todo teu coração, de toda tua alma e de todo teu espírito {Dt 6,5}.
"Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?"36 Este é o maior e o primeiro mandamento.
He said to him, "You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.37 E o segundo, semelhante a este, é: Amarás teu próximo como a ti mesmo {Lv 19,18}.
This is the greatest and the first commandment.38 Nesses dois mandamentos se resumem toda a lei e os profetas.
The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.39 Como os fariseus se agrupassem, Jesus interrogou-os:
The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments."40 Que pensais vós de Cristo? De quem é filho? Responderam: De Davi!
While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus questioned them,41 Como então, prosseguiu Jesus, Davi, falando sob inspiração do Espírito, chama-o Senhor, dizendo:
saying, "What is your opinion about the Messiah? Whose son is he?" They replied, "David's."42 O Senhor disse a meu Senhor: Senta-te à minha direita, até que eu ponha teus inimigos por escabelo dos teus pés {Sl 109,1}?
He said to them, "How, then, does David, inspired by the Spirit, call him 'lord,' saying:43 Se, pois, Davi o chama Senhor, como é ele seu filho?
'The Lord said to my lord, "Sit at my right hand until I place your enemies under your feet"'?44 Ninguém pôde responder-lhe nada. E, depois daquele dia, ninguém mais ousou interrogá-lo.
If David calls him 'lord,' how can he be his son?"
No one was able to answer him a word, nor from that day on did anyone dare to ask him any more questions.
