NEW AMERICAN BIBLENOVA VULGATA
On that day, Jesus went out of the house and sat down by the sea.1 In illo die exiens Iesus de domo sedebat secus mare;
Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat down, and the whole crowd stood along the shore.2 et congregataesunt ad eum turbae multae, ita ut in naviculam ascendens sederet, et omnis turbastabat in litore.
And he spoke to them at length in parables, saying: "A sower went out to sow.3 Et locutus est eis multa in parabolis dicens: “ Ecce exiit, qui seminat,seminare.
And as he sowed, some seed fell on the path, and birds came and ate it up.4 Et dum seminat, quaedam ceciderunt secus viam, et venerunt volucreset comederunt ea.
Some fell on rocky ground, where it had little soil. It sprang up at once because the soil was not deep,5 Alia autem ceciderunt in petrosa, ubi non habebant terrammultam, et continuo exorta sunt, quia non habebant altitudinem terrae;
and when the sun rose it was scorched, and it withered for lack of roots.6 soleautem orto, aestuaverunt et, quia non habebant radicem, aruerunt.
Some seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it.7 Alia autemceciderunt in spinas, et creverunt spinae et suffocaverunt ea.
But some seed fell on rich soil, and produced fruit, a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold.8 Alia veroceciderunt in terram bonam et dabant fructum: aliud centesimum, aliudsexagesimum, aliud tricesimum.
Whoever has ears ought to hear."9 Qui habet aures, audiat ”.
The disciples approached him and said, "Why do you speak to them in parables?"10 Et accedentesdiscipuli dixerunt ei: “ Quare in parabolis loqueris eis? ”.
He said to them in reply, "Because knowledge of the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven has been granted to you, but to them it has not been granted.11 Quirespondens ait illis: “ Quia vobis datum est nosse mysteria regni caelorum,illis autem non est datum.
To anyone who has, more will be given and he will grow rich; from anyone who has not, even what he has will be taken away.12 Qui enim habet, dabitur ei, et abundabit; quiautem non habet, et quod habet, auferetur ab eo.
This is why I speak to them in parables, because 'they look but do not see and hear but do not listen or understand.'13 Ideo in parabolis loquoreis, quia videntes non vident et audientes non audiunt neque intellegunt;
Isaiah's prophecy is fulfilled in them, which says: 'You shall indeed hear but not understand you shall indeed look but never see.14 etadimpletur eis prophetia Isaiae dicens:
"Auditu audietis et non intellegetis
et videntes videbitis et non videbitis.
Gross is the heart of this people, they will hardly hear with their ears, they have closed their eyes, lest they see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and be converted, and I heal them.'15 Incrassatum est enim cor populi huius,
et auribus graviter audierunt
et oculos suos clauserunt,
ne quando oculis videant
et auribus audiant
et corde intellegant et convertantur,
et sanem eos".
"But blessed are your eyes, because they see, and your ears, because they hear.16 Vestri autem beati oculi, quia vident, et aures vestrae, quia audiunt.
Amen, I say to you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.17 Amen quippe dico vobis: Multi prophetae et iusti cupierunt videre, quae videtis,et non viderunt, et audire, quae auditis, et non audierunt!
"Hear then the parable of the sower.18 Vos ergo audite parabolam seminantis.
The seed sown on the path is the one who hears the word of the kingdom without understanding it, and the evil one comes and steals away what was sown in his heart.19 Omnis, qui audit verbum regni et nonintellegit, venit Malus et rapit, quod seminatum est in corde eius; hic est, quisecus viam seminatus est.
The seed sown on rocky ground is the one who hears the word and receives it at once with joy.20 Qui autem supra petrosa seminatus est, hic est, quiverbum audit et continuo cum gaudio accipit illud,
But he has no root and lasts only for a time. When some tribulation or persecution comes because of the word, he immediately falls away.21 non habet autem in seradicem, sed est temporalis; facta autem tribulatione vel persecutione propterverbum, continuo scandalizatur.
The seed sown among thorns is the one who hears the word, but then worldly anxiety and the lure of riches choke the word and it bears no fruit.22 Qui autem est seminatus in spinis, hic est,qui verbum audit, et sollicitudo saeculi et fallacia divitiarum suffocat verbum,et sine fructu efficitur.
But the seed sown on rich soil is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold."23 Qui vero in terra bona seminatus est, hic est, quiaudit verbum et intellegit et fructum affert et facit aliud quidem centum, aliudautem sexaginta, porro aliud triginta ”.
He proposed another parable to them. "The kingdom of heaven may be likened to a man who sowed good seed in his field.24 Aliam parabolam proposuit illis dicens: “ Simile factum est regnum caelorumhomini, qui seminavit bonum semen in agro suo.
While everyone was asleep his enemy came and sowed weeds all through the wheat, and then went off.25 Cum autem dormirent homines,venit inimicus eius et superseminavit zizania in medio tritici et abiit.
When the crop grew and bore fruit, the weeds appeared as well.26 Cumautem crevisset herba et fructum fecisset, tunc apparuerunt et zizania.
The slaves of the householder came to him and said, 'Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? Where have the weeds come from?'27 Accedentes autem servi patris familias dixerunt ei: “Domine, nonne bonum semenseminasti in agro tuo? Unde ergo habet zizania?”.
He answered, 'An enemy has done this.' His slaves said to him, 'Do you want us to go and pull them up?'28 Et ait illis: “Inimicushomo hoc fecit”. Servi autem dicunt ei: “Vis, imus et colligimus ea?”.
He replied, 'No, if you pull up the weeds you might uproot the wheat along with them.29 Et ait: “Non; ne forte colligentes zizania eradicetis simul cum eis triticum,
Let them grow together until harvest; then at harvest time I will say to the harvesters, "First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles for burning; but gather the wheat into my barn."'"30 sinite utraque crescere usque ad messem. Et in tempore messis dicammessoribus: Colligite primum zizania et alligate ea in fasciculos ad comburendumea, triticum autem congregate in horreum meum” ”.
He proposed another parable to them. "The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that a person took and sowed in a field.31 Aliam parabolam proposuit eis dicens: “ Simile est regnum caelorum granosinapis, quod accipiens homo seminavit in agro suo.
It is the smallest of all the seeds, yet when full-grown it is the largest of plants. It becomes a large bush, and the 'birds of the sky come and dwell in its branches.'"32 Quod minimum quidem estomnibus seminibus; cum autem creverit, maius est holeribus et fit arbor, ita utvolucres caeli veniant et habitent in ramis eius ”.
He spoke to them another parable. "The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed with three measures of wheat flour until the whole batch was leavened."33 Aliam parabolam locutus est eis: “ Simile est regnum caelorum fermento,quod acceptum mulier abscondit in farinae satis tribus, donec fermentatum esttotum ”.
All these things Jesus spoke to the crowds in parables. He spoke to them only in parables,34 Haec omnia locutus est Iesus in parabolis ad turbas; et sine parabola nihilloquebatur eis,
to fulfill what had been said through the prophet: "I will open my mouth in parables, I will announce what has lain hidden from the foundation (of the world)."35 ut adimpleretur, quod dictum erat per prophetam dicentem:
“ Aperiam in parabolis os meum,
eructabo abscondita a constitutione mundi ”.
Then, dismissing the crowds, he went into the house. His disciples approached him and said, "Explain to us the parable of the weeds in the field."36 Tunc, dimissis turbis, venit in domum, et accesserunt ad eum discipuli eiusdicentes: “ Dissere nobis parabolam zizaniorum agri ”.
He said in reply, "He who sows good seed is the Son of Man,37 Qui respondensait: “ Qui seminat bonum semen, est Filius hominis;
the field is the world, the good seed the children of the kingdom. The weeds are the children of the evil one,38 ager autem est mundus;bonum vero semen, hi sunt filii regni; zizania autem filii sunt Mali;
and the enemy who sows them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are angels.39 inimicus autem, qui seminavit ea, est Diabolus; messis vero consummatio saeculiest; messores autem angeli sunt.
Just as weeds are collected and burned (up) with fire, so will it be at the end of the age.40 Sicut ergo colliguntur zizania et ignicomburuntur, sic erit in consummatione saeculi:
The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will collect out of his kingdom all who cause others to sin and all evildoers.41 mittet Filius hominis angelossuos, et colligent de regno eius omnia scandala et eos, qui faciunt iniquitatem,
They will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.42 et mittent eos in caminum ignis; ibi erit fletus et stridor dentium.
Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Whoever has ears ought to hear.43 Tunciusti fulgebunt sicut sol in regno Pa tris eorum. Qui habet aures, audiat.
"The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure buried in a field, which a person finds and hides again, and out of joy goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.44 Simile est regnum caelorum thesauro abscondito in agro; quem qui invenit homoabscondit et prae gaudio illius vadit et vendit universa, quae habet, et emitagrum illum.
Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant searching for fine pearls.45 Iterum simile est regnum caelorum homini negotiatori quaerenti bonasmargaritas.
When he finds a pearl of great price, he goes and sells all that he has and buys it.46 Inventa autem una pretiosa margarita, abiit et vendidit omnia,quae habuit, et emit eam.
Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net thrown into the sea, which collects fish of every kind.47 Iterum simile est regnum caelorum sagenae missae in mare et ex omni generecongreganti;
When it is full they haul it ashore and sit down to put what is good into buckets. What is bad they throw away.48 quam, cum impleta esset, educentes secus litus et sedentescollegerunt bonos in vasa, malos autem foras miserunt.
Thus it will be at the end of the age. The angels will go out and separate the wicked from the righteous49 Sic erit inconsummatione saeculi: exibunt angeli et separabunt malos de medio iustorum
and throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.50 et mittent eos in caminum ignis; ibi erit fletus et stridor dentium.
"Do you understand all these things?" They answered, "Yes."51 Intellexistis haec omnia? ”. Dicunt ei: “ Etiam ”.
And he replied, "Then every scribe who has been instructed in the kingdom of heaven is like the head of a household who brings from his storeroom both the new and the old."52 Ait autem illis:“ Ideo omnis scriba doctus in regno caelorum similis est homini patrifamilias, qui profert de thesauro suo nova et vetera ”.
When Jesus finished these parables, he went away from there.53 Et factum est, cum consummasset Iesus parabolas istas, transiit inde.
He came to his native place and taught the people in their synagogue. They were astonished and said, "Where did this man get such wisdom and mighty deeds?54 Etveniens in patriam suam, docebat eos in synagoga eorum, ita ut mirarentur etdicerent: “ Unde huic sapientia haec et virtutes?
Is he not the carpenter's son? Is not his mother named Mary and his brothers James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas?55 Nonne hic est fabrifilius? Nonne mater eius dicitur Maria, et fratres eius Iacobus et Ioseph etSimon et Iudas?
Are not his sisters all with us? Where did this man get all this?"56 Et sorores eius nonne omnes apud nos sunt? Unde ergo huicomnia ista? ”.
And they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his native place and in his own house."57 Et scandalizabantur in eo. Iesus autem dixit eis: “ Nonest propheta sine honore nisi in patria et in domo sua ”.
And he did not work many mighty deeds there because of their lack of faith.58 Et non fecit ibivirtutes multas propter incredulitatem illorum.
