NEW AMERICAN BIBLENOVA VULGATA
At that time Jesus was going through a field of grain on the sabbath. His disciples were hungry and began to pick the heads of grain and eat them.1 In illo tempore abiit Iesus sabbatis per sata; discipuli autem eiusesurierunt et coeperunt vellere spicas et manducare.
When the Pharisees saw this, they said to him, "See, your disciples are doing what is unlawful to do on the sabbath."2 Pharisaei autem videntesdixerunt ei: “ Ecce discipuli tui faciunt, quod non licet facere sabbato ”.
He said to them, "Have you not read what David did when he and his companions were hungry,3 At ille dixit eis: “ Non legistis quid fecerit David, quando esuriit, et quicum eo erant?
how he went into the house of God and ate the bread of offering, which neither he nor his companions but only the priests could lawfully eat?4 Quomodo intravit in domum Dei et panes propositionis comedit,quod non licebat ei edere neque his, qui cum eo erant, nisi solis sacerdotibus?
Or have you not read in the law that on the sabbath the priests serving in the temple violate the sabbath and are innocent?5 Aut non legistis in Lege quia sabbatis sacerdotes in templo sabbatum violantet sine crimine sunt?
I say to you, something greater than the temple is here.6 Dico autem vobis quia templo maior est hic.
If you knew what this meant, 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice,' you would not have condemned these innocent men.7 Si autemsciretis quid est: “Misericordiam volo et non sacrificium”, numquamcondemnassetis innocentes.
For the Son of Man is Lord of the sabbath."8 Dominus est enim Filius hominis sabbati ”.
Moving on from there, he went into their synagogue.9 Et cum inde transisset, venit in synagogam eorum;
And behold, there was a man there who had a withered hand. They questioned him, "Is it lawful to cure on the sabbath?" so that they might accuse him.10 et ecce homo manum habensaridam. Et interrogabant eum dicentes: “ Licet sabbatis curare? ”, utaccusarent eum.
He said to them, "Which one of you who has a sheep that falls into a pit on the sabbath will not take hold of it and lift it out?11 Ipse autem dixit illis: “ Quis erit ex vobis homo, quihabeat ovem unam et, si ceciderit haec sabbatis in foveam, nonne tenebit etlevabit eam?
How much more valuable a person is than a sheep. So it is lawful to do good on the sabbath."12 Quanto igitur melior est homo ove! Itaque licet sabbatis benefacere ”.
Then he said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." He stretched it out, and it was restored as sound as the other.13 Tunc ait homini: “ Extende manum tuam ”. Et extendit, etrestituta est sana sicut altera.
But the Pharisees went out and took counsel against him to put him to death.14 Exeuntes autem pharisaei consilium faciebantadversus eum, quomodo eum perderent.
When Jesus realized this, he withdrew from that place. Many (people) followed him, and he cured them all,15 Iesus autem sciens secessit inde. Et secuti sunt eum multi, et curavit eosomnes
but he warned them not to make him known.16 et comminatus est eis, ne manifestum eum facerent,
This was to fulfill what had been spoken through Isaiah the prophet:17 ut adimpleretur,quod dictum est per Isaiam prophetam dicentem:
"Behold, my servant whom I have chosen, my beloved in whom I delight; I shall place my spirit upon him, and he will proclaim justice to the Gentiles.18 “ Ecce puer meus, quem elegi,
dilectus meus, in quo bene placuit animae meae;
ponam Spiritum meum super eum,
et iudicium gentibus nuntiabit.
He will not contend or cry out, nor will anyone hear his voice in the streets.19 Non contendet neque clamabit,
neque audiet aliquis in plateis vocem eius.
A bruised reed he will not break, a smoldering wick he will not quench, until he brings justice to victory.20 Arundinem quassatam non confringet
et linum fumigans non exstinguet,
donec eiciat ad victoriam iudicium;
And in his name the Gentiles will hope."21 et in nomine eius gentes sperabunt ”.
Then they brought to him a demoniac who was blind and mute. He cured the mute person so that he could speak and see.22 Tunc oblatus est ei daemonium habens, caecus et mutus, et curavit eum, ita utmutus loqueretur et videret.
All the crowd was astounded, and said, "Could this perhaps be the Son of David?"23 Et stupebant omnes turbae et dicebant: “Numquid hic est filius David? ”.
But when the Pharisees heard this, they said, "This man drives out demons only by the power of Beelzebul, the prince of demons."24 Pharisaei autem audientes dixerunt: “Hic non eicit daemones nisi in Beelzebul, principe daemonum ”.
But he knew what they were thinking and said to them, "Every kingdom divided against itself will be laid waste, and no town or house divided against itself will stand.25 Sciens autem cogitationes eorum dixit eis: “ Omne regnum divisum contra sedesolatur, et omnis civitas vel domus divisa contra se non stabit.
And if Satan drives out Satan, he is divided against himself; how, then, will his kingdom stand?26 Et siSatanas Satanam eicit, adversus se divisus est; quomodo ergo stabit regnum eius?
And if I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your own people drive them out? Therefore they will be your judges.27 Et si ego in Beelzebul eicio daemones, filii vestri in quo eiciunt? Ideo ipsiiudices erunt vestri.
But if it is by the Spirit of God that I drive out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.28 Si autem in Spiritu Dei ego eicio daemones, igiturpervenit in vos regnum Dei.
How can anyone enter a strong man's house and steal his property, unless he first ties up the strong man? Then he can plunder his house.29 Aut quomodo potest quisquam intrare in domumfortis et vasa eius diripere, nisi prius alligaverit fortem? Et tunc domumillius diripiet.
Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.30 Qui non est mecum, contra me est; et, qui non congregatmecum, spargit.
Therefore, I say to you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven people, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.31 Ideo dico vobis: Omne peccatum et blasphemia remittetur hominibus, Spiritusautem blasphemia non remittetur.
And whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven; but whoever speaks against the holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.32 Et quicumque dixerit verbum contra Filiumhominis, remittetur ei; qui autem dixerit contra Spiritum Sanctum, nonremittetur ei neque in hoc saeculo neque in futuro.
"Either declare the tree good and its fruit is good, or declare the tree rotten and its fruit is rotten, for a tree is known by its fruit.33 Aut facite arborem bonam et fructum eius bonum, aut facite arborem malam etfructum eius malum: si quidem ex fructu arbor agnoscitur.
You brood of vipers, how can you say good things when you are evil? For from the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks.34 Progeniesviperarum, quomodo potestis bona loqui, cum sitis mali? Ex abundantia enimcordis os loquitur.
A good person brings forth good out of a store of goodness, but an evil person brings forth evil out of a store of evil.35 Bonus homo de bono thesauro profert bona, et malus homode malo thesauro profert mala.
I tell you, on the day of judgment people will render an account for every careless word they speak.36 Dico autem vobis: Omne verbum otiosum, quodlocuti fuerint homines, reddent rationem de eo in die iudicii:
By your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned."37 ex verbis enimtuis iustificaberis, et ex verbis tuis condemnaberis ”.
Then some of the scribes and Pharisees said to him, "Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you."38 Tunc responderunt ei quidam de scribis et pharisaeis dicentes: “ Magister,volumus a te signum videre ”.
He said to them in reply, "An evil and unfaithful generation seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it except the sign of Jonah the prophet.39 Qui respondens ait illis: “ Generatio malaet adultera signum requirit; et signum non dabitur ei, nisi signum Ionaeprophetae.
Just as Jonah was in the belly of the whale three days and three nights, so will the Son of Man be in the heart of the earth three days and three nights.40 Sicut enim fuit Ionas in ventre ceti tribus diebus et tribusnoctibus, sic erit Filius hominis in corde terrae tribus diebus et tribusnoctibus.
At the judgment, the men of Nineveh will arise with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and there is something greater than Jonah here.41 Viri Ninevitae surgent in iudicio cum generatione ista etcondemnabunt eam, quia paenitentiam egerunt in praedicatione Ionae; et ecce plusquam Iona hic!
At the judgment the queen of the south will arise with this generation and condemn it, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and there is something greater than Solomon here.42 Regina austri surget in iudicio cum generatione ista etcondemnabit eam, quia venit a finibus terrae audire sapientiam Salomonis; etecce plus quam Salomon hic!
"When an unclean spirit goes out of a person it roams through arid regions searching for rest but finds none.43 Cum autem immundus spiritus exierit ab homine, ambulat per loca aridaquaerens requiem et non invenit.
Then it says, 'I will return to my home from which I came.' But upon returning, it finds it empty, swept clean, and put in order.44 Tunc dicit: “Revertar in domum meam undeexivi”; et veniens invenit vacantem, scopis mundatam et ornatam.
Then it goes and brings back with itself seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they move in and dwell there; and the last condition of that person is worse than the first. Thus it will be with this evil generation."45 Tunc vaditet assumit secum septem alios spiritus nequiores se, et intrantes habitant ibi;et fiunt novissima hominis illius peiora prioribus. Sic erit et generationi huicpessimae ”.
While he was still speaking to the crowds, his mother and his brothers appeared outside, wishing to speak with him.46 Adhuc eo loquente ad turbas, ecce mater et fratres eius stabant forisquaerentes loqui ei.
(Someone told him, "Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, asking to speak with you.")47 Dixit autem ei quidam: “ Ecce mater tua et fratres tuiforis stant quaerentes loqui tecum ”.
But he said in reply to the one who told him, "Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?"48 At ille respondens dicenti sibi ait:“ Quae est mater mea, et qui sunt fratres mei? ”.
And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said, "Here are my mother and my brothers.49 Et extendens manum suamin discipulos suos dixit: “ Ecce mater mea et fratres mei.
For whoever does the will of my heavenly Father is my brother, and sister, and mother."50 Quicumque enimfecerit voluntatem Patris mei, qui in caelis est, ipse meus frater et soror etmater est ”.
