NEW AMERICAN BIBLENOVA VULGATA
Zelophehad, son of Hepher, son of Gilead, son of Machir, son of Manasseh, son of Joseph, had daughters named Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah and Tirzah. They came forward,1 Accesserunt autem filiae Sal phaad filii Hepher filii Ga laad filii Machir filii Manasse, e cognationibus Manasse, qui fuit filius Ioseph, quarum sunt nomina: Maala et Noa et Hegla et Melcha et Thersa.
and standing in the presence of Moses, the priest Eleazar, the princes, and the whole community at the entrance of the meeting tent, said:2 Steteruntque coram Moyse et Eleazaro sacerdote et principibus et cuncta congregatione ad ostium tabernaculi conventus atque dixerunt:
"Our father died in the desert. Although he did not join those who banded together against the LORD (in Korah's band), he died for his own sin without leaving any sons.3 “ Pater noster mortuus est in deserto, nec fuit in seditione, quae concitata est contra Dominum sub Core, sed in peccato suo mortuus est; hic non habuit mares filios.
But why should our father's name be withdrawn from his clan merely because he had no son? Let us, therefore, have property among our father's kinsmen."4 Cur tollitur nomen illius de familia sua, quia non habuit filium? Date nobis possessionem inter fratres patris nostri ”.
When Moses laid their case before the LORD,5 Rettulitque Moyses causam earum ad iudicium Domini,
the LORD said to him,6 qui dixit ad eum:
"The plea of Zelophehad's daughters is just; you shall give them hereditary property among their father's kinsmen, letting their father's heritage pass on to them.7 “ Iustam rem postulant filiae Salphaad. Da eis possessionem inter fratres patris sui, et ei in hereditatem succedant.
Therefore, tell the Israelites: If a man dies without leaving a son, you shall let his heritage pass on to his daughter;8 Ad filios autem Israel loqueris haec: Homo cum mortuus fuerit absque filio, ad filiam eius transibit hereditas;
if he has no daughter, you shall give his heritage to his brothers;9 si filiam non habuerit, habebit successores fratres suos.
if he has no brothers, you shall give his heritage to his father's brothers;10 Quod si et fratres non fuerint, dabitis hereditatem fratribus patris eius.
if his father had no brothers, you shall give his heritage to his nearest relative in his clan, who shall then take possession of it." This is the legal norm for the Israelites, as the LORD commanded Moses.11 Sin autem nec patruos habuerit, dabitur hereditas illi, qui ei proximus est e cognatione sua; possidebitque eam. Eritque hoc filiis Israel sanctum lege perpetua, sicut praecepit Dominus Moysi ”.
The LORD said to Moses, "Go up here into the Abarim Mountains and view the land that I am giving to the Israelites.12 Dixit quoque Dominus ad Moysen: “ Ascende in montem istum Abarim et contemplare inde terram, quam daturus sum filiis Israel.
When you have viewed it, you too shall be taken to your people, as was your brother Aaron,13 Cumque videris eam, ibis et tu ad populum tuum, sicut ivit frater tuus Aaron,
because in the rebellion of the community in the desert of Zin you both rebelled against my order to manifest my sanctity to them by means of the water." (This is the water of Meribah of Kadesh in the desert of Zin.)14 quia offendistis me in deserto Sin in contradictione congregationis, nec sanctificare me voluistis coram ea super aquas ”. Hae sunt aquae Meribathcades deserti Sin.
Then Moses said to the LORD,15 Cui respondit Moyses:
"May the LORD, the God of the spirits of all mankind, set over the community a man16 “ Provideat Dominus, Deus spirituum omnis carnis, hominem, qui sit super congregationem hanc
who shall act as their leader in all things, to guide them in all their actions; that the LORD'S community may not be like sheep without a shepherd."17 et possit exire et intrare ante eos et educere eos vel introducere, ne sit populus Domini sicut oves absque pastore ”.
And the LORD replied to Moses, "Take Joshua, son of Nun, a man of spirit, and lay your hand upon him.18 Dixitque Dominus ad eum: “ Tolle Iosue filium Nun, virum in quo est spiritus; et pone manum tuam super eum,
Have him stand in the presence of the priest Eleazar and of the whole community, and commission him before their eyes.19 quem statues coram Eleazaro sacerdote et omni congregatione et dabis ei praecepta, cunctis videntibus,
Invest him with some of your own dignity, that the whole Israelite community may obey him.20 et partem gloriae tuae, ut audiat eum omnis synagoga filiorum Israel.
He shall present himself to the priest Eleazar, to have him seek out for him the decisions of the Urim in the LORD'S presence; and as he directs, Joshua, all the Israelites with him, and the community as a whole shall perform all their actions."21 Stabit coram Eleazaro sacerdote, qui pro eo iudicium Urim consulet Dominum. Ad verbum eius egredietur et ingredietur ipse et omnes filii Israel cum eo, cuncta congregatio ”.
Moses did as the LORD had commanded him. Taking Joshua and having him stand in the presence of the priest Eleazar and of the whole community,22 Fecit Moyses, ut praeceperat Dominus. Cumque tulisset Iosue, statuit eum coram Eleazaro sacerdote et omni frequentia populi;
he laid his hands on him and gave him his commission, as the LORD had directed through Moses.23 et, impositis capiti eius manibus, constituit eum, sicut mandaverat Dominus per manum Moysi.
