1 The whole Israelite community arrived in the desert of Zin in the first month, and the people settled at Kadesh. It was here that Miriam died, and here that she was buried.	1 I figli di Israele, tutta la comunità, nel primo mese giunsero nel deserto di Sin. Il popolo si stabilì a Kadesh. Qui morì Maria e fu sepolta.
2 As the community had no water, they held a council against Moses and Aaron.	2 Ma non c’era acqua per la comunità; il popolo allora si radunò contro Mosè e contro Aronne.
3 The people contended with Moses, exclaiming, "Would that we too had perished with our kinsmen in the LORD'S presence!	3 Il popolo litigò con Mosè dicendo: «Oh, fossimo periti quando perirono i nostri fratelli al cospetto di Jahvè!
4 Why have you brought the LORD'S community into this desert where we and our livestock are dying?	4 Perché mai avete condotto in questo deserto l’assemblea di Jahvè? Affinché noi e il nostro bestiame moriamo qui?
5 Why did you lead us out of Egypt, only to bring us to this wretched place which has neither grain nor figs nor vines nor pomegranates? Here there is not even water to drink!"	5 Perché mai ci avete fatto uscire dall’Egitto per condurci in questo luogo selvaggio? Non è luogo in cui si possa seminare, non ci sono fichi, non vigne, non melegrane e neppure acqua da bere!»
6 But Moses and Aaron went away from the assembly to the entrance of the meeting tent, where they fell prostrate. Then the glory of the LORD appeared to them,	6 Mosè e Aronne vennero allora dall’assemblea all’ingresso della Tenda del convegno. Caddero con la faccia a terra e apparve loro la gloria di Jahvè.
7 and the LORD said to Moses,	7 Jahvè parlò a Mosè:
8 "Take the staff and assemble the community, you and your brother Aaron, and in their presence order the rock to yield its waters. From the rock you shall bring forth water for the community and their livestock to drink."	8 «Prendi il bastone e raduna la comunità, tu e Aronne tuo fratello. Alla loro presenza parlate a quella roccia ed essa farà scaturire le sue acque. Farai sgorgare per loro acqua dalla roccia e darai da bere alla comunità e al suo bestiame».
9 So Moses took the staff from its place before the LORD, as he was ordered.	9 Come Egli aveva ordinato, Mosè tolse il bastone dal cospetto di Jahvè;
10 He and Aaron assembled the community in front of the rock, where he said to them, "Listen to me, you rebels! Are we to bring water for you out of this rock?"	10 Mosè e Aronne radunarono l’assemblea innanzi alla roccia. Mosè disse loro: «Ascoltate ora, o ribelli. Da questa roccia, faremo uscire acqua per voi?»
11 Then, raising his hand, Moses struck the rock twice with his staff, and water gushed out in abundance for the community and their livestock to drink.	11 Mosè alzò la mano e con il bastone colpì la roccia due volte: sgorgarono acque in abbondanza. La comunità e il suo bestiame poterono bere.
12 But the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, "Because you were not faithful to me in showing forth my sanctity before the Israelites, you shall not lead this community into the land I will give them."	12 Jahvè allora disse a Mosè e ad Aronne: «Poiché non avete creduto in me riconoscendomi santo agli occhi dei figli di Israele, perciò non introdurrete quest’assemblea nella terra che io ho assegnato loro».
13 These are the waters of Meribah, where the Israelites contended against the LORD, and where he revealed his sanctity among them.	13 Sono queste le acque di Meriba, dove i figli di Israele litigarono con Jahvè e dove egli manifestò in mezzo a loro la sua santità.
14 From Kadesh Moses sent men to the king of Edom with the message: "Your brother Israel has this to say: You know of all the hardships that have befallen us,	14 Da Kadesh Mosè mandò messaggeri al re di Edom per dire: «Così dice tuo fratello Israele. "Tu conosci tutte le tribolazioni che abbiamo incontrato.
15 how our fathers went down to Egypt, where we stayed a long time, how the Egyptians maltreated us and our fathers,	15 I nostri padri discesero in Egitto e noi siamo rimasti in Egitto per molto tempo. Ma gli Egiziani maltrattarono noi e i nostri padri.
16 and how, when we cried to the LORD, he heard our cry and sent an angel who led us out of Egypt. Now here we are at the town of Kadesh at the edge of your territory.	16 Alzammo grida di aiuto a Jahvè ed egli ascoltò la nostra voce, mandò un angelo e ci fece uscire dall’Egitto. Ecco, ci troviamo a Kadesh, città che è all’estremità del tuo territorio.
17 Kindly let us pass through your country. We will not cross any fields or vineyards, nor drink any well water, but we will go straight along the royal road without turning to the right or to the left, until we have passed through your territory."	17 Permettici di attraversare la tua terra: non attraverseremo i campi né le vigne, non berremo l’acqua dei pozzi, cammineremo per la Via Regia senza deviare a destra o a sinistra finché non avremo attraversato i tuoi confini».
18 But Edom answered him, "You shall not pass through here; if you do, I will advance against you with the sword."	18 Edom gli rispose: «Non passerai da me, altrimenti ti verrò incontro con la spada».
19 The Israelites insisted, "We want only to go up along the highway. If we or our livestock drink any of your water, we will pay for it. Surely there is no harm in merely letting us march through."	19 I figli di Israele gli dissero: «Saliremo per la strada pubblica; se io e il mio bestiame berremo le tue acque, te ne pagheremo il prezzo. D’altro non si tratta che lasciarci attraversare a piedi».
20 But Edom still said, "No, you shall not pass through," and advanced against them with a large and heavily armed force.	20 Egli rispose: «Non passerai». Edom gli uscì incontro con molta gente e con mano forte.
21 Therefore, since Edom refused to let them pass through their territory, Israel detoured around them.	21 Poiché Edom aveva rifiutato di dare un passaggio a Israele nel suo territorio, Israele si allontanò da lui.
22 Setting out from Kadesh, the whole Israelite community came to Mount Hor.	22 I figli di Israele, tutta la comunità levarono le tende da Kadesh e giunsero al monte Hor
23 There at Mount Hor, on the border of the land of Edom, the LORD said to Moses and Aaron,	23 e al monte Hor, sul confine della terra di Edom, Jahvè parlò a Mosè e ad Aronne:
24 "Aaron is about to be taken to his people; he shall not enter the land I am giving to the Israelites, because you both rebelled against my commandment at the waters of Meribah.	24 «Aronne sarà riunito ai suoi antenati, poiché non deve entrare nella terra che darò ai figli di Israele! Presso le acque di Meriba infatti siete stati ribelli al mio comando.
25 Take Aaron and his son Eleazar and bring them up on Mount Hor.	25 Prendi Aronne ed Eleazaro suo figlio e falli salire sul monte Hor.
26 Then strip Aaron of his garments and put them on his son Eleazar; for there Aaron shall be taken in death."	26 Spoglierai Aronne delle vesti e ne rivestirai Eleazaro suo figlio, mentre Aronne sarà riunito; ivi egli morirà».
27 Moses did as the LORD commanded. When they had climbed Mount Hor in view of the whole community,	27 Mosè fece quanto Jahvè gli aveva ordinato. Sotto gli occhi di tutta la comunità salirono sul monte Hor.
28 Moses stripped Aaron of his garments and put them on his son Eleazar. Then Aaron died there on top of the mountain. When Moses and Eleazar came down from the mountain,	28 Mosè spogliò Aronne delle vesti e ne rivestì Eleazaro suo figlio: là, in cima al monte, Aronne morì. Poi Mosè ed Eleazaro discesero dal monte.
29 all the community understood that Aaron had passed away; and for thirty days the whole house of Israel mourned him.	29 Tutta la comunità vide che Aronne era spirato e tutta la casa di Israele pianse Aronne per trenta giorni.
