1 How lonely she is now, the once crowded city! Widowed is she who was mistress over nations; The princess among the provinces has been made a toiling slave.	1 SALEPH. Come mai siede solitaria la città già piena di popolo, la signora delle nazioni è come vedova: la donna di Provincie è obbligata al tributo?
2 Bitterly she weeps at night, tears upon her cheeks, With not one to console her of all her dear ones; Her friends have all betrayed her and become her enemies.	2 ABETH. Ella piange inconsolabilmente la notte, le sue lagrime bagnano le sue guance: non v' ha tra tutti i suoi cari chi la consoli: tutti gli amici suoi la han disprezzata, e son divenuti suoi avversari.
3 Judah has fled into exile from oppression and cruel slavery; Yet where she lives among the nations she finds no place to rest: All her persecutors come upon her where she is narrowly confined.	3 GHIMEL. Disperso andò Giuda, perchè straziato con molte maniere di servitù: pose sua stanza tralle nazioni, e non trovò requie: tutti i suoi persecutori lo strinsero da tutte parti.
4 The roads to Zion mourn for lack of pilgrims going to her feasts; All her gateways are deserted, her priests groan, Her virgins sigh; she is in bitter grief.	4 DALETH. Piangono le vie di Sionne, perchè nissuno più concorre alle sue solennità: tutte le sue porte distrutte: i sacerdoti sgementi, le vergini nello squallore, ed della oppressa dall'amarezza.
5 Her foes are uppermost, her enemies are at ease; The LORD has punished her for her many sins. Her little ones have gone away, captive before the foe.	5 SHE. I suoi nemici la signoreggiano; que', che la odiano, si sono arrichiti; perchè il Signore pronunziò contro di lei per le molte sue iniquità. I suoi fanciulli sono stati condotti in ischiavitù, cacciati dal persecutore.
6 Gone from daughter Zion is all her glory: Her princes, like rams that find no pasture, Have gone off without strength before their captors.	6 VAU. Perde la figlia di Sion tutta la sua beltà: i suoi principi son diventati come arieti, che non trovan pastura: e sono andati privi di forze innanzi a chi stava loro alle spalle.
7 Jerusalem is mindful of the days of her wretched homelessness, When her people fell into enemy hands, and she had no one to help her; When her foes gloated over her, laughed at her ruin.	7 ZAIN. Gerusalemme ha in memoria i giorni di sua tribolazione, e la sua prevaricazione, e tutti que' beni, ch'ella ebbe fin dagli antichi tempi, quando il suo popolo per man nemica cadeva, privo di chi l'aiutasse. La videro i nemici, e si burlarono de' suoi sabati.
8 Through the sin of which she is guilty, Jerusalem is defiled; All who esteemed her think her vile now that they see her nakedness; She herself groans and turns away.	8 HETH. Peccato grande fu il peccato di Gerusalemme, per questo ella non ha avuto stabilità. Tutti que', che le davano lode, la han disprezzata, perchè han vedute le sue brutture: ella perciò so spirando ha rivolta indietro la faccia.
9 Her filth is on her skirt; she gave no thought how she would end. Astounding is her downfall, with no one to console her. Look, O LORD, upon her misery, for the enemy has triumphed!	9 TETH. La sua immondezza è fin ne' suoi piedi, ne ella si ricordò del suo fine. Or ella è altamente depressa, senza avere chi la consoli. Mira, o Signore, la tribolazione mia; perocché il nemico è divenuto insolente.
10 The foe stretched out his hand to all her treasures; She has seen those nations enter her sanctuary Whom you forbade to come into your assembly.	10 JOD. Il nimico mise la mano sopra tutto quel, ch'ella avea di più caro, ed ella ha veduto entrar nel suo santuario le genti, le quali tu avevi ordinato, che alle tue adunanze non si accostassero.
11 All her people groan, searching for bread; They give their treasures for food, to retain the breath of life. "Look O LORD, and see how worthless I have become!	11 CAPH. Tutto il suo popolo è in sospiri, e cerca di pane, tutte le cose più preziose hanno date per aver cibo da ristorarsi. Mira, o Signore, e considera com' io sono avvilita.
12 "Come, all you who pass by the way, look and see Whether there is any suffering like my suffering, which has been dealt me When the LORD afflicted me on the day of his blazing wrath.	12 LAMED. O voi tutti, che passate per questa strada, ponete mente, e vedete, se v' ha dolor simile al mio dolore; perocché il Signore, secondo ch'egli predisse, mi ha vendemmiata nel giorno dell'ira sua furibonda.
13 "From on high he sent fire down into my very frame; He spread a net for my feet, and overthrew me. He left me desolate, in pain all the day.	13 MEM. Dall'alto mandò un fuoco nelle mie ossa, e mi gastigò: tese una rete a' miei piedi, e mi fé cadere all'indietro. Mi ha posto in desolazione, mi ha fatto tutto di consumar di dolore.
14 "He has kept watch over my sins; by his hand they have been plaited: They have settled about my neck, he has brought my strength to its knees; The Lord has delivered me into their grip, I am unable to rise.	14 NUN. Venne sopra di me ad un tratto e il giogo di mie iniquità. Egli colle sue mani ne fé un fascio, e le pose sopra il mio collo. Le mie forze sono mancate. Signore mi ha consegnata a tal mano, da cui fuggir non potrò.
15 "All the mighty ones in my midst the Lord has cast away; He summoned an army against me to crush my young men; The LORD has trodden in the wine press virgin daughter Judah.	15 SAMECH. Il Signore mi ha rapito dal seno tutti i miei principi. Ha chiamato contro di me il tempo, in cui distruggere tutti i miei campioni. Il Signore ha pigiate le uve per la vergine figlia di AIN.
16 "At this I weep, my eyes run with tears: Far from me are all who could console me, any who might revive me; My sons were reduced to silence when the enemy prevailed."	16 Per questo io piango, ed acque sgorgano dagli occhi miei, perchè si è ritirato da me il consolatore, che ravvivi l'anima mia. I figli miei sono periti, perchè il nimico l'ha vinta.
17 Zion stretched out her hands, but there was no one to console her; The LORD gave orders against Jacob for his neighbors to be his foes; Jerusalem has become in their midst a thing unclean.	17 PHE. Sionne stende le mani, ma non havvi chi la consoli. Il Signore ha con vocato contro Giacobbe i suoi nemici, che lo circondassero: in mezzo a questi Gerusalemme è come una donna nella sua immondezza.
18 "The LORD is just; I had defied his command. Listen, all you peoples, and behold my suffering: My maidens and my youths have gone into captivity.	18 SADE. Giusto è il Signore, perchè io violando la sua parola lo esacerbai. Popoli tutti udite, vi prego, e ponete mente al mio dolore: le mie vergini, i miei giovani son' iti in ischiavitù.
19 "I cried out to my lovers, but they failed me. My priests and my elders perished in the city; Where they sought food for themselves, they found it not.	19 COPH. Ricorsi agli amici miei, ed ei m'ingannarono. I miei sacerdoti, e i miei anziani si son consumati nella città incercando cibo da sostener la loro vita.
20 "Look, O LORD, upon my distress: all within me is in ferment, My heart recoils within me from my monstrous rebellion. In the streets the sword bereaves, at home death stalks.	20 RES. Mira, o Signore, com' io son tribolata: le mie viscere sono scommosse, il mio cuore è sconvolto dentro di me,io son piena di amarezza. La spada uccide al di fuori, e in casa è l'immagine della morte.
21 "Give heed to my groaning; there is no one to console me. All my enemies rejoice at my misfortune: it is you who have wrought it. Bring on the day you have proclaimed, that they may be even as I.	21 SIN. Hanno uditi i miei gemiti, e nissun' ha, che mi consoli: tutti i miei nemici hanno sapute le mie sciagure, neanno goduto, perchè questa è opra tua: manderai il giorno di consolazione, e diverran simili a me.
22 "Let all their evil come before you; deal with them As you have dealt with me for all my sins; My groans are many, and I am sick at heart."	22 THAU. Siati presente tutta la loro malizia, e trattali come me hai trattato per le mie iniquità: imperocché continui sono i miei sospiri, ed è angustiato il mio cuore.
