NEW AMERICAN BIBLENOVA VULGATA
The LORD said to Moses,1 Locutusque est Dominus ad Moysen dicens:
"This is the law for the victim of leprosy at the time of his purification. He shall be brought to the priest,2 “ Hic est ri tus leprosi, quando mundandus est: adducetur ad sacerdotem,
who is to go outside the camp to examine him. If the priest finds that the sore of leprosy has healed in the leper,3 qui egressus e castris, cum invenerit lepram esse sanatam,
he shall order the man who is to be purified, to get two live, clean birds, as well as some cedar wood, scarlet yarn, and hyssop.4 praecipiet, ut sumant pro eo, qui purificatur, duas aves vivas, mundas et lignum cedrinum vermiculumque et hyssopum.
The priest shall then order him to slay one of the birds over an earthen vessel with spring water in it.5 Et unam ex avibus immolari iubebit in vase fictili super aquas viventes.
Taking the living bird with the cedar wood, the scarlet yarn and the hyssop, the priest shall dip them all in the blood of the bird that was slain over the spring water,6 Aliam autem vivam cum ligno cedrino et cocco et hyssopo tinguet in sanguine avis super aquas viventes immolatae,
and then sprinkle seven times the man to be purified from his leprosy. When he has thus purified him, he shall let the living bird fly away over the countryside.7 quo asperget illum, qui a lepra mundandus est, septies, ut iure purgetur; et dimittet avem vivam, ut in agrum avolet.
The man being purified shall then wash his garments and shave off all his hair and bathe in water; only when he is thus made clean may he come inside the camp; but he shall still remain outside his tent for seven days.8 Cumque laverit homo vestimenta sua, radet omnes pilos corporis, et lavabitur aqua; purificatusque ingredietur castra, ita dumtaxat ut maneat extra tabernaculum suum septem diebus.
On the seventh day he shall again shave off all the hair of his head, his beard, his eyebrows, and any other hair he may have, and also wash his garments and bathe his body in water; and so he will be clean.9 Et die septimo radet capillos capitis barbamque et supercilia ac totius corporis pilos et lavabit vestimenta carnemque suam aqua, et mundus erit.
"On the eighth day he shall take two unblemished male lambs, one unblemished yearling ewe lamb, three tenths of an ephah of fine flour mixed with oil for a cereal offering, and one log of oil.10 Die octavo assumet duos agnos immaculatos et ovem anniculam absque macula et tres decimas ephi similae in sacrificium, quae conspersa sit oleo, et log olei.
The priest who performs the purification ceremony shall place the man who is being purified, as well as all these offerings, before the LORD at the entrance of the meeting tent.11 Cumque sacerdos purificans hominem statuerit eum et haec omnia coram Domino in ostio tabernaculi conventus,
Taking one of the male lambs, the priest shall present it as a guilt offering, along with the log of oil, waving them as a wave offering before the LORD.12 tollet agnum unum et offeret eum in sacrificium pro delicto, oleique log et, elevatis ante Dominum omnibus,
(This lamb he shall slaughter in the sacred place where the sin offering and the holocaust are slaughtered; because, like the sin offering, the guilt offering belongs to the priest and is most sacred.)13 immolabit agnum, ubi immolari solet hostia pro peccato et holocaustum, id est in loco sancto. Sicut enim pro peccato ita et pro delicto ad sacerdotem pertinet sacrificium: sanctum sanctorum est.
Then the priest shall take some of the blood of the guilt offering and put it on the tip of the man's right ear, the thumb of his right hand, and the big toe of his right foot.14 Assumensque sacerdos de sanguine hostiae pro delicto ponet super extremum auriculae dextrae eius, qui mundatur, et super pollices manus dextrae et pedis;
The priest shall also take the log of oil and pour some of it into the palm of his own left hand;15 et de olei log mittet in manum suam sinistram
then, dipping his right forefinger in it, he shall sprinkle it seven times before the LORD.16 tinguetque digitum dextrum in eo et asperget septies coram Domino.
Of the oil left in his hand the priest shall put some on the tip of the man's right ear, the thumb of his right hand, and the big toe of his right foot, over the blood of the guilt offering.17 Quod autem reliquum est olei in laeva manu, fundet super extremum auriculae dextrae eius, qui mundatur, et super pollices manus ac pedis dextri et super sanguinem sacrificii pro delicto
The rest of the oil in his hand the priest shall put on the head of the man being purified. Thus shall the priest make atonement for him before the LORD.18 et super caput eius, qui mundatur; expiabitque eum coram Domino
Only after he has offered the sin offering in atonement for the man's uncleanness shall the priest slaughter the holocaust19 et faciet sacrificium pro peccato. Tunc immolabit holocaustum
and offer it, together with the cereal offering, on the altar before the LORD. When the priest has thus made atonement for him, the man will be clean.20 et ponet illud in altari cum sacrificio similae, et homo rite mundabitur.
"If a man is poor and cannot afford so much, he shall take one male lamb for a guilt offering, to be used as a wave offering in atonement for himself, one tenth of an ephah of fine flour mixed with oil for a cereal offering, a log of oil,21 Quod si pauper est, et non potest manus eius invenire, quae dicta sunt, assumet agnum pro delicto ad elationem, ut expiet eum sacerdos, decimamque partem similae conspersae oleo in sacrificium et olei log
and two turtledoves or pigeons, which he can more easily afford, the one as a sin offering and the other as a holocaust.22 duosque turtures sive duos pullos columbae, quos manus eius invenire poterit, unum pro peccato et alterum in holocaustum.
On the eighth day of his purification he shall bring them to the priest, at the entrance of the meeting tent before the LORD.23 Offeretque ea die octavo purificationis suae sacerdoti ad ostium tabernaculi conventus coram Domino.
Taking the guilt-offering lamb, along with the log of oil, the priest shall wave them as a wave offering before the LORD.24 Qui suscipiens agnum pro delicto et log olei levabit simul coram Domino;
When he has slaughtered the guilt-offering lamb, he shall take some of its blood, and put it on the tip of the right ear of the man being purified, on the thumb of his right hand, and on the big toe of his right foot.25 immolatoque agno pro delicto, de sanguine eius ponet super extremum auriculae dextrae illius, qui mundatur, et super pollices manus eius ac pedis dextri;
The priest shall then pour some of the oil into the palm of his own left hand26 olei vero partem mittet in manum suam sinistram.
and with his right forefinger sprinkle it seven times before the LORD.27 In quo tinguens digitum dextrae manus asperget septies coram Domino;
Some of the oil in his hand the priest shall also put on the tip of the man's right ear, the thumb of his right hand, and the big toe of his right foot, over the blood of the guilt offering.28 tangetque extremum auriculae dextrae illius, qui mundatur, et pollices manus ac pedis dextri super locum sanguinis, qui effusus est pro delicto.
The rest of the oil in his hand the priest shall put on the man's head. Thus shall he make atonement for him before the LORD.29 Reliquam autem partem olei, quae est in sinistra manu, mittet super caput hominis, qui purificatur, in expiationem eius coram Domino;
Then, of the turtledoves or pigeons, such as the man can afford,30 et turtures sive pullos columbae, quos manus illius invenerit, offeret,
the priest shall offer up one as a sin offering and the other as a holocaust, along with the cereal offering. Thus shall the priest make atonement before the LORD for the man who is to be purified.31 unum pro delicto et alterum in holocaustum cum sacrificio similae, et sic expiabit eum sacerdos coram Domino.
This is the law for one afflicted with leprosy who has insufficient means for his purification."32 Hoc est sacrificium leprosi, qui habere non potest omnia in emundationem sui ”.
The LORD said to Moses and Aaron,33 Locutus est Dominus ad Moysen et Aaron dicens:
"When you come into the land of Canaan, which I am giving you to possess, if I put a leprous infection on any house of the land you occupy,34 “ Cum ingressi fueritis terram Chanaan, quam ego dabo vobis in possessionem, si fuerit plaga leprae in aedibus terrae possessionis vestrae,
the owner of the house shall come and report to the priest, 'It looks to me as if my house were infected.'35 ibit, cuius est domus, nuntians sacerdoti et dicet: "Quasi plaga videtur mihi esse in domo mea".
The priest shall then order the house to be cleared out before he goes in to examine the infection, lest everything in the house become unclean. Only after this is he to go in to examine the house.36 At ille praecipiet, ut efferant universa de domo, priusquam ingrediatur eam, et videat plagam, ne immunda fiant omnia, quae in domo sunt. Intrabitque postea, ut consideret domum;
If the priest, on examining it, finds that the infection on the walls of the house consists of greenish or reddish depressions which seem to go deeper than the surface of the wall,37 et, cum viderit in parietibus illius quasi valliculas pallore sive rubore deformes et humiliores superficie reliqua,
he shall close the door of the house behind him and quarantine the house for seven days.38 egredietur ostium domus et statim claudet eam septem diebus.
On the seventh day the priest shall return to examine the house again. If he finds that the infection has spread on the walls,39 Reversusque die septimo considerabit eam; si invenerit crevisse plagam,
he shall order the infected stones to be pulled out and cast in an unclean place outside the city.40 iubebit erui lapides, in quibus plaga est, et proici eos extra civitatem in loco immundo;
The whole inside of the house shall then be scraped, and the mortar that has been scraped off shall be dumped in an unclean place outside the city.41 domum autem ipsam radi intrinsecus per circuitum et spargi pulverem rasurae extra urbem in locum immundum
Then new stones shall be brought and put in the place of the old stones, and new mortar shall be made and plastered on the house.42 lapidesque alios reponi pro his, qui ablati fuerint, et luto alio liniri domum.
"If the infection breaks out once more after the stones have been pulled out and the house has been scraped and replastered,43 Sin autem plaga rursum effloruerit in domo, postquam eruti sunt lapides et pulvis erasus et alia terra lita,
the priest shall come again; and if he finds that the infection has spread in the house, it is corrosive leprosy, and the house is unclean.44 et ingressus sacerdos viderit crevisse plagam in domo: lepra est maligna et domus immunda.
It shall be pulled down, and all its stones, beams and mortar shall be hauled away to an unclean place outside the city.45 Quam statim destruent et lapides eius ac ligna atque universum pulverem domus proicient extra oppidum in loco immundo.
Whoever enters a house while it is quarantined shall be unclean until evening.46 Qui intraverit domum, quando clausa est, immundus erit usque ad vesperum;
Whoever sleeps or eats in such a house shall also wash his garments.47 et, qui dormierit in ea vel comederit quippiam, lavabit vestimenta sua.
If the priest finds, when he comes to examine the house, that the infection has in fact not spread after the plastering, he shall declare the house clean, since the infection has been healed.48 Quod si introiens sacerdos viderit plagam non crevisse in domo, postquam denuo lita est, mundam eam esse decernet, reddita sanitate.
To purify the house, he shall take two birds, as well as cedar wood, scarlet yarn, and hyssop.49 Et in purificationem eius sumet duas aves lignumque cedrinum et vermiculum atque hyssopum
One of the birds he shall slay over an earthen vessel with spring water in it.50 et, immolata una avi in vase fictili super aquas vivas,
Then, taking the cedar wood, the hyssop and the scarlet yarn, together with the living bird, he shall dip them all in the blood of the slain bird and the spring water, and sprinkle the house seven times.51 tollet lignum cedrinum et hyssopum et coccum et avem vivam et intinguet omnia in sanguine avis immolatae atque in aquis viventibus et asperget domum septies;
Thus shall he purify the house with the bird's blood and the spring water, along with the living bird, the cedar wood, the hyssop, and the scarlet yarn.52 purificabitque eam tam in sanguine avis quam in aquis viventibus et in avi viva lignoque cedrino et hyssopo atque vermiculo;
He shall then let the living bird fly away over the countryside outside the city. When he has thus made atonement for it, the house will be clean.53 cumque dimiserit avem avolare extra urbem in agrum libere, expiabit domum, et erit munda.
"This is the law for every kind of human leprosy and scall,54 Ista est lex omnis leprae et scabiei,
for leprosy of garments and houses,55 leprae vestium et domorum,
as well as for scabs, pustules and blotches,56 tumoris et pustulae et lucentis maculae,
so that it may be manifest when there is a state of uncleanness and when a state of cleanness. This is the law for leprosy."57 ut possit sciri quo tempore immundum quid vel mundum sit ”.
