1 The greatest among his brethren, the glory of his people, was SIMON the priest, son of Jochanan, In whose time the house of God was renovated, in whose days the temple was reinforced.	1 Grande tra i fratelli e gloria del suo popolo fu Simone, figlio di Onia, gran sacerdote. Durante la sua vita fu riparato il santuario e nei suoi giorni egli fortificò il tempio.
2 In his time also the wall was built with powerful turrets for the temple precincts;	2 Al suo tempo venne scavata la piscina, una vasca della capacità del mare;
3 In his time the reservoir was dug, the pool with a vastness like the sea's.	3 ai suoi giorni fu edificato il muro e opere di sostegno al palazzo del re.
4 He protected his people against brigands and strengthened his city against the enemy.	4 Prese cura del suo popolo contro i ladroni e fortificò la città contro il nemico.
5 How splendid he was as he appeared from the tent, as he came from within the veil!	5 Come splendido si affacciava alla tenda , e usciva da dietro il velo!
6 Like a star shining among the clouds, like the full moon at the holyday season;	6 Come stella che brilla tra le nubi e come plenilunio nei giorni festivi;
7 Like the sun shining upon the temple, like the rainbow appearing in the cloudy sky;	7 come sole che rifulge sul tempio dell’Altissimo e arcobaleno che appare nelle nuvole;
8 Like the blossoms on the branches in springtime, like a lily on the banks of a stream; Like the trees of Lebanon in summer,	8 come fiore sul ramo in giorni di primavera e quale giglio sul corso dell’acqua, come germoglio del Libano in giorni di estate
9 like the fire of incense at the sacrifice; Like a vessel of beaten gold, studded with precious stones;	9 e quale voluta d’incenso sull’offerta; quale vaso d’oro di metallo massiccio, incastonato di pietre preziose;
10 Like a luxuriant olive tree thick with fruit, like a cypress standing against the clouds;	10 come verde olivo dalle molte bacche e come oleandro che stilla per i rami:
11 Vested in his magnificent robes, and wearing his garments of splendor, As he ascended the glorious altar and lent majesty to the court of the sanctuary.	11 tale appariva nell’indossare le vesti e nel rivestire le magnifiche insegne; quando saliva all’altare santo e ornava gli orli dell’altare;
12 When he received the sundered victims from the priests while he stood before the sacrificial wood, His brethren ringed him about like a garland, like a stand of cedars on Lebanon;	12 quando riceveva le parti dalle mani dei suoi fratelli e stava presso il mucchio e intorno a lui era una corona di figli, come getti di cedro sul Libano.
13 All the sons of Aaron in their dignity clustered around him like poplars, With the offerings to the LORD in their hands, in the presence of the whole assembly of Israel.	13 Lo circondavano come salici della valle tutti i figli di Aronne nel loro abbigliamento, con in mano i sacrifici di fuoco per Jahvè innanzi a tutta l’assemblea di Israele,
14 Once he had completed the services at the altar with the arranging of the sacrifices for the Most High,	14 finché non avesse finito di servire all’altare e messo l’ordine alle offerte dell’Altissimo;
15 And had stretched forth his hand for the cup, to offer blood of the grape, And poured it out at the foot of the altar, a sweet-smelling odor to the Most High God,	15 stesa la mano alla coppa e dopo aver libato il succo dell’uva, spargeva ai piedi dell’altare il profumo soave all’Altissimo.
16 The sons of Aaron would sound a blast, the priests, on their trumpets of beaten metal; A blast to resound mightily as a reminder before the Most High.	16 Allora i sacerdoti, figli di Aronne, davano fiato alle trombe di metallo battuto, suonavano facendo udire un forte squillo, a ricordo davanti all’Altissimo.
17 Then all the people with one accord would quickly fall prostrate to the ground In adoration before the Most High, before the Holy One of Israel.	17 Tutti insieme subito si affrettavano a cadere faccia a terra, per adorare davanti all’Altissimo, davanti al Santo di Israele.
18 Then hymns would re-echo, and over the throng sweet strains of praise resound.	18 Elevavano i cantori le voci Sila e sulla moltitudine la melodia risuonava dolcemente;
19 All the people of the land would shout for joy, praying to the Merciful One, As the high priest completed the services at the altar by presenting to God the sacrifice due;	19 giubilava tutto il popolo in preghiere davanti al Misericordioso, finché egli non finiva di servire all’altare e compiva i debiti riti.
20 Then coming down he would raise his hands over all the congregation of Israel. The blessing of the LORD would be upon his lips, the name of the LORD would be his glory.	20 Allora discendeva ed elevava le mani sopra tutto Israele in assemblea, e la benedizione di Jahvè era sulle labbra di lui, insignito del nome di Jahvè.
21 Then again the people would lie prostrate to receive from him the blessing of the Most High.	21 Avveniva che, per la seconda volta, tutto il popolo si prostrava davanti a lui.
22 And now, bless the God of all, who has done wondrous things on earth; Who fosters men's growth from their mother's womb, and fashions them according to his will!	22 Benedite ora Jahvè, Dio di Israele, che opera cose meravigliose sulla terra, che fa crescere l’uomo fin dal seno materno e che si adopera per lui come gli piace.
23 May he grant you joy of heart and may peace abide among you;	23 Conceda a voi la sapienza del cuore e ci sia pace fra di voi.
24 May his goodness toward us endure in Israel as long as the heavens are above.	24 Rimanga la sua grazia con Simone e renda stabile per lui l’alleanza di Pinkhas, che non verrà meno per lui e la sua progenie, finché dura il cielo.
25 My whole being loathes two nations, the third is not even a people:	25 Due popoli abomina la mia anima e un terzo che non è un popolo:
26 Those who live in Seir and Philistia, and the degenerate folk who dwell in Shechem.	26 gli abitanti di Seir, quelli di Filistea e la gente stolta che abita a Sichem.
27 Wise instruction, appropriate proverbs, I have written in this book, I, Jesus, son of Eleazar, son of Sirach, as they gushed forth from my heart's understanding.	27 Istruzione sapiente e proverbi opportuni, che Gesù, figlio di Eleazaro, figlio di Sira, versa aprendo il proprio cuore, e di cui fa fluire l’intelligenza.
28 Happy the man who meditates upon these things, wise the man who takes them to heart!	28 Beato è l’uomo che li medita ed è sapiente chi li pone sul proprio cuore, poiché il timore di Jahvè è vita.
29 If he puts them into practice, he can cope with anything, for the fear of the LORD is his lamp.
