NEW AMERICAN BIBLEGREEK BIBLE
After him came NATHAN who served in the presence of David.1 και μετα τουτον ανεστη ναθαν προφητευειν εν ημεραις δαυιδ
Like the choice fat of the sacred offerings, so was DAVID in Israel.2 ωσπερ στεαρ αφωρισμενον απο σωτηριου ουτως δαυιδ απο των υιων ισραηλ
He made sport of lions as though they were kids, and of bears, like lambs of the flock.3 εν λεουσιν επαιξεν ως εν εριφοις και εν αρκοις ως εν αρνασι προβατων
As a youth he slew the giant and wiped out the people's disgrace, When his hand let fly the slingstone that crushed the pride of Goliath.4 εν νεοτητι αυτου ουχι απεκτεινεν γιγαντα και εξηρεν ονειδισμον εκ λαου εν τω επαραι χειρα εν λιθω σφενδονης και καταβαλειν γαυριαμα του γολιαθ
Since he called upon the Most High God, who gave strength to his right arm To defeat the skilled warrior and raise up the might of his people,5 επεκαλεσατο γαρ κυριον τον υψιστον και εδωκεν εν τη δεξια αυτου κρατος εξαραι ανθρωπον δυνατον εν πολεμω ανυψωσαι κερας λαου αυτου
Therefore the women sang his praises and ascribed to him tens of thousands. When he assumed the royal crown, he battled6 ουτως εν μυριασιν εδοξασαν αυτον και ηνεσαν αυτον εν ευλογιαις κυριου εν τω φερεσθαι αυτω διαδημα δοξης
and subdued the enemy on every side. He destroyed the hostile Philistines and shattered their power till our own day.7 εξετριψεν γαρ εχθρους κυκλοθεν και εξουδενωσεν φυλιστιιμ τους υπεναντιους εως σημερον συνετριψεν αυτων κερας
With his every deed he offered thanks to God Most High, in words of praise. With his whole being he loved his Maker and daily had his praises sung;8 εν παντι εργω αυτου εδωκεν εξομολογησιν αγιω υψιστω ρηματι δοξης εν παση καρδια αυτου υμνησεν και ηγαπησεν τον ποιησαντα αυτον
He added beauty to the feasts and solemnized the seasons of each year With string music before the altar, providing sweet melody for the psalms9 και εστησεν ψαλτωδους κατεναντι του θυσιαστηριου και εξ ηχους αυτων γλυκαινειν μελη
So that when the Holy Name was praised, before daybreak the sanctuary would resound.10 εδωκεν εν εορταις ευπρεπειαν και εκοσμησεν καιρους μεχρι συντελειας εν τω αινειν αυτους το αγιον ονομα αυτου και απο πρωιας ηχειν το αγιασμα
The LORD forgave him his sins and exalted his strength forever; He conferred on him the rights of royalty and established his throne in Israel.11 κυριος αφειλεν τας αμαρτιας αυτου και ανυψωσεν εις αιωνα το κερας αυτου και εδωκεν αυτω διαθηκην βασιλεων και θρονον δοξης εν τω ισραηλ
Because of his merits he had as his successor a wise son, who lived in security:12 μετα τουτον ανεστη υιος επιστημων και δι' αυτον κατελυσεν εν πλατυσμω
SOLOMON reigned during an era of peace, for God made tranquil all his borders. He built a house to the name of God, and established a lasting sanctuary.13 σαλωμων εβασιλευσεν εν ημεραις ειρηνης ω ο θεος κατεπαυσεν κυκλοθεν ινα στηση οικον επ' ονοματι αυτου και ετοιμαση αγιασμα εις τον αιωνα
How wise you were when you were young, overflowing with instruction, like the Nile in flood!14 ως εσοφισθης εν νεοτητι σου και ενεπλησθης ως ποταμος συνεσεως
Your understanding covered the whole earth, and, like a sea, filled it with knowledge.15 γην επεκαλυψεν η ψυχη σου και ενεπλησας εν παραβολαις αινιγματων
Your fame reached distant coasts, and their peoples came to hear you;16 εις νησους πορρω αφικετο το ονομα σου και ηγαπηθης εν τη ειρηνη σου
With song and story and riddle, and with your answers, you astounded the nations.17 εν ωδαις και παροιμιαις και παραβολαις και εν ερμηνειαις απεθαυμασαν σε χωραι
You were called by that glorious name which was conferred upon Israel. Gold you gathered like so much iron, you heaped up silver as though it were lead;18 εν ονοματι κυριου του θεου του επικεκλημενου θεου ισραηλ συνηγαγες ως κασσιτερον το χρυσιον και ως μολιβον επληθυνας αργυριον
But you abandoned yourself to women and gave them dominion over your body.19 παρανεκλινας τας λαγονας σου γυναιξιν και ενεξουσιασθης εν τω σωματι σου
You brought dishonor upon your reputation, shame upon your marriage, Wrath upon your descendants, and groaning upon your domain;20 εδωκας μωμον εν τη δοξη σου και εβεβηλωσας το σπερμα σου επαγαγειν οργην επι τα τεκνα σου και κατανυγηναι επι τη αφροσυνη σου
Thus two governments came into being, when in Ephraim kingship was usurped.21 γενεσθαι διχα τυραννιδα και εξ εφραιμ αρξαι βασιλειαν απειθη
But God does not withdraw his mercy, nor permit even one of his promises to fail. He does not uproot the posterity of his chosen one, nor destroy the offspring of his friend. So he gave to Jacob a remnant, to David a root from his own family.22 ο δε κυριος ου μη καταλιπη το ελεος αυτου και ου μη διαφθειρη απο των λογων αυτου ουδε μη εξαλειψη εκλεκτου αυτου εκγονα και σπερμα του αγαπησαντος αυτον ου μη εξαρη και τω ιακωβ εδωκεν καταλειμμα και τω δαυιδ εξ αυτου ριζαν
Solomon finally slept with his fathers, and left behind him one of his sons, Expansive in folly, limited in sense, REHOBOAM, who by his policy made the people rebel; Until one arose who should not be remembered, the sinner who led Israel into sin, Who brought ruin to Ephraim23 και ανεπαυσατο σαλωμων μετα των πατερων αυτου και κατελιπεν μετ' αυτον εκ του σπερματος αυτου λαου αφροσυνην και ελασσουμενον συνεσει ροβοαμ ος απεστησεν λαον εκ βουλης αυτου
and caused them to be exiled from their land. Their sinfulness grew more and more,24 και ιεροβοαμ υιος ναβατ ος εξημαρτεν τον ισραηλ και εδωκεν τω εφραιμ οδον αμαρτιας και επληθυνθησαν αι αμαρτιαι αυτων σφοδρα αποστησαι αυτους απο της γης αυτων
and they lent themselves to every evil,25 και πασαν πονηριαν εξεζητησαν εως εκδικησις ελθη επ' αυτους
