Sirach 40

1 A great anxiety has God allotted, and a heavy yoke, to the sons of men; From the day one leaves his mother's womb to the day he returns to the mother of all the living,	1 Un grande affanno è stato dato ad ogni uomo, un giogo pesante è sopra i figli di Adamo, da quando escono dal seno della madre fino a quando fan ritorno alla madre di tutti.
2 His thoughts, the fear in his heart, and his troubled forebodings till the day he dies--	2 I loro pensieri e la trepidazione del cuore esprimono l'attesa del giorno della morte.
3 Whether he sits on a lofty throne or grovels in dust and ashes,	3 Da chi siede sopra un trono di gloria fino a chi sta nella terra e nella cenere,
4 Whether he bears a splendid crown or is wrapped in the coarsest of cloaks--	4 da chi indossa porpora e corona fino a chi veste di lino grezzo: rabbia, invidia, ansietà e agitazione, paura della morte, collera e contese.
5 Are of wrath and envy, trouble and dread, terror of death, fury and strife. Even when he lies on his bed to rest, his cares at night disturb his sleep.	5 Anche quando riposa nel letto, il sonno della notte turba i suoi pensieri.
6 So short is his rest it seems like none, till in his dreams he struggles as he did by day, Terrified by what his mind's eye sees, like a fugitive being pursued;	6 Riposa poco ed è come niente, anche nel sonno s'affatica come di giorno, perché è sconvolto dalla visione del suo cuore, come chi fugge di fronte alla guerra.
7 As he reaches safety, he wakes up astonished that there was nothing to fear.	7 Ma quando poi è in salvo deve svegliarsi, costatando che non c'era motivo di temere.
8 So it is with all flesh, with man and with beast, but for sinners seven times more.	8 Così è per ogni carne, dall'uomo alla bestia, ma per i peccatori è sette volte di più:
9 Plague and bloodshed, wrath and the sword, plunder and ruin, famine and death:	9 morte, sangue, contesa e spada, disastri, carestia, rovina e piaghe.
10 For the wicked, these were created evil, and it is they who bring on destruction.	10 Questi mali sono stati creati per gli empi, a causa loro è avvenuto il diluvio.
11 All that is of earth returns to earth, and what is from above returns above.	11 Tutto quello che è dalla terra torna alla terra, e quello che è dalle acque si getta di nuovo nel mare.
12 All that comes from bribes or injustice will be wiped out, but loyalty remains for ages.	12 Ogni regalo corruttore e l'ingiustizia spariranno, ma l'onestà rimarrà per sempre.
13 Wealth out of wickedness is like a wadi in spate: like a mighty stream with lightning and thunder,	13 Le ricchezze degli ingiusti si prosciugano come fiume, si disperdono come tuono che echeggia nella burrasca.
14 Which, in its rising, rolls along the stones, but suddenly, once and for all, comes to an end.	14 Se dovranno aprire le mani, non ci sarà compassione, i disobbedienti sono abbandonati alla rovina.
15 The offshoot of violence will not flourish, for the root of the godless is on sheer rock;	15 I figli degli empi non avranno molti rami, sono radici impure su pietra levigata,
16 Or they are like reeds on the riverbank, withered before all other plants;	16 come giunco che cresce nelle paludi e lungo i fiumi ed è divelto prima di ogni altra erba.
17 But goodness will never be cut off, and justice endures forever. Wealth or wages can make life sweet, but better than either is finding a treasure.	17 La bontà è come un paradiso di benedizione, l'elemosina rimane per sempre.
18 A child or a city will preserve one's name, but better than either, attaining wisdom.	18 Chi è indipendente e chi è impiegato hanno vita dolce, ma vale di più chi trova un tesoro.
19 Sheepfolds and orchards bring flourishing health; but better than either, a devoted wife;	19 Figli e fondazione d'una città perpetuano il proprio nome, ma vale di più una donna irreprensibile.
20 Wine and music delight the soul, but better than either, conjugal love.	20 Il vino e la musica rallegrano il cuore, ma vale di più l'amore della sapienza.
21 The flute and the harp offer sweet melody, but better than either, a voice that is true.	21 Il flauto e l'arpa rendono piacevole il canto, ma vale di più una lingua soave.
22 Charm and beauty delight the eye, but better than either, the flowers of the field.	22 L'occhio gode a vedere grazia e bellezza, ma più ancora il verde del campo seminato.
23 A friend, a neighbor, are timely guides, but better than either, a prudent wife.	23 E' sempre piacevole l'incontro di due amici, ma più ancora dell'uomo con la moglie.
24 A brother, a helper, for times of stress; but better than either, charity that rescues.	24 Fratelli e soccorritori aiutano nella tribolazione, ma più ancora è l'elemosina che libera.
25 Gold and silver make one's way secure, but better than either, sound judgment.	25 L'oro e l'argento sostengono i passi, ma vale di più un buon consiglio.
26 Wealth and vigor build up confidence, but better than either, fear of God. Fear of the LORD leaves nothing wanting; he who has it need seek no other support:	26 Ricchezze e forza esaltano il cuore, ma più d'entrambi il timore del Signore. Col timore del Signore non c'è indigenza, allora non c'è da cercare aiuto.
27 The fear of God is a paradise of blessings; its canopy, all that is glorious.	27 Il timore del Signore è come giardino di benedizione, ricopre più di ogni altra gloria.
28 My son, live not the life of a beggar, better to die than to beg;	28 Figlio, non vivere una vita di mendico, è meglio morire che mendicare.
29 When one has to look to another's table, his life is not really a life. His neighbor's delicacies bring revulsion of spirit to one who understands inward feelings:	29 Per l'uomo che guarda alla tavola altrui l'esistenza non merita il nome di vita. Si contamina pure con cibi proibiti, ma l'uomo saggio e istruito se ne guarderà.
30 In the mouth of the shameless man begging is sweet, but within him it burns like fire.	30 Alla bocca dello spudorato piace mendicare, ma nel ventre ha un fuoco che gli brucia.
