Sirach 40

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	BIBLIA
1 A great anxiety has God allotted, and a heavy yoke, to the sons of men; From the day one leaves his mother's womb to the day he returns to the mother of all the living,	1 Grandes trabajos han sido creados para todo hombre, un yugo pesado hay sobre los hijos de Adán, desde el día que salieron del vientre de su madre, hasta el día del retorno a la madre de todo.
2 His thoughts, the fear in his heart, and his troubled forebodings till the day he dies--	2 Sus reflexiones, el miedo de su corazón es la idea del futuro, el día de la muerte.
3 Whether he sits on a lofty throne or grovels in dust and ashes,	3 Desde el que está sentado en un trono glorioso, hasta el que en tierra y ceniza está humillado,
4 Whether he bears a splendid crown or is wrapped in the coarsest of cloaks--	4 desde el que lleva púrpura y corona, hasta el que se cubre de tela grosera, sólo furor, envidia, turbación, inquietud, miedo a la muerte, resentimiento y discordia.
5 Are of wrath and envy, trouble and dread, terror of death, fury and strife. Even when he lies on his bed to rest, his cares at night disturb his sleep.	5 A la hora del descanso en la cama, el sueño de la noche altera el conocimiento.
6 So short is his rest it seems like none, till in his dreams he struggles as he did by day, Terrified by what his mind's eye sees, like a fugitive being pursued;	6 Poco, casi nada, reposa, y ya en sueños, como en día de guardia, se ve turbado por las visiones de su corazón, como el que ha huído ante el combate.
7 As he reaches safety, he wakes up astonished that there was nothing to fear.	7 A la hora de su turno se despierta, sorprendido de su vano temor.
8 So it is with all flesh, with man and with beast, but for sinners seven times more.	8 Para toda carne, del hombre hasta la bestia, mas para los pecadores siete veces más:
9 Plague and bloodshed, wrath and the sword, plunder and ruin, famine and death:	9 Muerte, sangre, discordia, espada, adversidades, hambre, tribulación, azote.
10 For the wicked, these were created evil, and it is they who bring on destruction.	10 Contra los sin ley fue creado todo esto, y por su culpa se produjo el diluvio.
11 All that is of earth returns to earth, and what is from above returns above.	11 Todo cuanto de tierra viene, a tierra vuelve, y cuanto de agua, en el mar desemboca.
12 All that comes from bribes or injustice will be wiped out, but loyalty remains for ages.	12 Todo don e injusticia serán aventados, más la fidelidad subsistirá por siempre.
13 Wealth out of wickedness is like a wadi in spate: like a mighty stream with lightning and thunder,	13 Las riquezas de los injustos se esfumarán como un torrente, como un gran trueno que en tormenta estalla.
14 Which, in its rising, rolls along the stones, but suddenly, once and for all, comes to an end.	14 Cuando él abre las manos, se contenta, así los transgresores desaparecerán por completo.
15 The offshoot of violence will not flourish, for the root of the godless is on sheer rock;	15 Los vástagos de los impíos no tienen muchas ramas, las raíces impuras sólo hallan piedra áspera.
16 Or they are like reeds on the riverbank, withered before all other plants;	16 Caña que brota en toda agua o borde de río será arrancada antes que toda hierba.
17 But goodness will never be cut off, and justice endures forever. Wealth or wages can make life sweet, but better than either is finding a treasure.	17 La caridad es como un paraíso de bendición, y la limosna permanece para siempre.
18 A child or a city will preserve one's name, but better than either, attaining wisdom.	18 La vida del que se basta a sí mismo y del obrero es dulce, pero más que ambos el que encuentra un tesoro.
19 Sheepfolds and orchards bring flourishing health; but better than either, a devoted wife;	19 Los hijos y la fundación de una ciudad perpetúan el nombre, pero más que ambas cosas es estimada la mujer intachable.
20 Wine and music delight the soul, but better than either, conjugal love.	20 El vino y la música ponen contento el corazón, pero más que ambas cosas el amor a la sabiduría.
21 The flute and the harp offer sweet melody, but better than either, a voice that is true.	21 La flauta y el salterio hacen el canto suave, pero más que ambas cosas la lengua dulce.
22 Charm and beauty delight the eye, but better than either, the flowers of the field.	22 Gracia y belleza el ojo anhela, pero más que ambas cosas el verdor del sembrado.
23 A friend, a neighbor, are timely guides, but better than either, a prudent wife.	23 Amigo y compañero se encuentran a su hora, pero más que ambos la mujer con el marido.
24 A brother, a helper, for times of stress; but better than either, charity that rescues.	24 Amigos y socorro para el tiempo de tribulación, pero más que ambos salva la limosna.
25 Gold and silver make one's way secure, but better than either, sound judgment.	25 Oro y plata hacen el paso firme, pero más que ambos se estima el consejo.
26 Wealth and vigor build up confidence, but better than either, fear of God. Fear of the LORD leaves nothing wanting; he who has it need seek no other support:	26 La riqueza y la fuerza realzan el corazón, pero más que las dos, el temor del Señor. En el temor del Señor no existe mengua, con él no hay ya por qué buscar ayuda.
27 The fear of God is a paradise of blessings; its canopy, all that is glorious.	27 El temor del Señor como un paraíso de bendición, protege él más que toda gloria.
28 My son, live not the life of a beggar, better to die than to beg;	28 Hijo, no lleves una vida de mendicidad, que más vale morir que mendigar.
29 When one has to look to another's table, his life is not really a life. His neighbor's delicacies bring revulsion of spirit to one who understands inward feelings:	29 Hombre que mira a la mesa de otro no merece el nombre de vida su existencia. Con comida ajena mancha su boca, pero el hombre instruido y educado de ello se guardará.
30 In the mouth of the shameless man begging is sweet, but within him it burns like fire.	30 En la boca del descarado la mendicidad resulta dulce, pero en su vientre es un fuego que abrasa.
