1 Every friend declares his friendship, but there are friends who are friends in name only.	1 Ogni amico dice: «Anch'io ho stretto amicizia [con lui] »; ma c'è l'amico ch'è amico solo di nome. Non è ella una tristezza sino alla morte,
2 Is it not a sorrow unto death when your bosom companion becomes your enemy?	2 [quando] un compagno e amico si volta a inimicizia?
3 "Alas, my companion! Why were you created to blanket the earth with deceit?"	3 O idea scellerata! donde sbucasti tu a coprir la terra di malizia e d'inganno?
4 A false friend will share your joys, but in time of trouble he stands afar off.	4 Il compagno [egoista] se la gode con l'amico nell'allegria, e al tempo della tribolazione si fa avversario.
5 A true friend will fight with you against the foe, against your enemies he will be your shield-bearer.	5 Il compagno [egoista] si travaglia con l'amico per la [propria] pancia, e in faccia al nemico imbraccia lo scudo [a sua propria difesa].
6 Forget not your comrade during the battle, and neglect him not when you distribute your spoils.	6 Non dimenticare in cuor tuo il tuo amico, e non ti scordar di lui nella tua opulenza.
7 Every counselor points out a way, but some counsel ways of their own;	7 Non ti consigliare con colui che t'insidia, e ai gelosi di te nascondi il [tuo] disegno.
8 Be on the alert when one proffers advice, find out first of all what he wants. For he may be thinking of himself alone; why should the profit fall to him?	8 Ogni consigliere spaccia consigli, ma c'è chi consiglia nel proprio interesse.
9 He may tell you how good your way will be, and then stand by to watch your misfortune.	9 Sta' in guardia verso il consigliere, e cerca di saper prima qual è il suo bisogno, poiché a se stesso egli penserà;
10 Seek no advice from one who regards you with hostility; from those who envy you, keep your intentions hidden.	10 affinchè egli non pianti un piuolo in terra, e ti dica:
11 Speak not to a woman about her rival, nor to a coward about war, to a merchant about business, to a buyer about value, to a miser about generosity, to a cruel man about mercy, to a lazy man about work, to a seasonal laborer about the harvest, to an idle slave about a great task: pay no attention to any advice they give.	11 «Buona è la tua via», e si metta di faccia a veder ciò che ti accadrà.
12 Instead, associate with a religious man, who you are sure keeps the commandments; Who is like-minded with yourself and will feel for you if you fall.	12 Con l'uomo irreligioso tratta di santità, e con l'ingiusto di giustizia! [Non ti consigliare] con una donna a proposito della sua rivale, e con un pusillanime a proposito di guerra, con un commerciante sur uno scambio, e col compratore sulla vendita, con un invidioso circa la riconoscenza,
13 Then, too, heed your own heart's counsel; for what have you that you can depend on more?	13 e con uno spietato circa la benignità, con un disonesto sull'onestà, con un neghittoso sur un lavoro qualsiasi,
14 A man's conscience can tell him his situation better than seven watchmen in a lofty tower.	14 con l'operaio fissato per un anno sul da compiersi nell'anno e col servo pigro sul molto lavoro: non t'appoggiare a costoro per nessun consiglio.
15 Most important of all, pray to God to set your feet in the path of truth.	15 Ma frequenta l'uomo pio, chiunque tu conosca timorato di Dio;
16 A word is the source of every deed; a thought, of every act.	16 la cui anima è secondo l'anima tua, e che, se barcollerai nelle tenebre, prenderà parte alle tue pene.
17 The root of all conduct is the mind; four branches it shoots forth:	17 E tienti a ciò che il cuore ti consiglia, che non c'è nessuno più fedele di lui:
18 Good and evil, death and life, their absolute mistress is the tongue.	18 l'anima d'un uomo pio dice talvolta il vero, meglio che sette sentinelle poste sur un'altura a spiare,
19 A man may be wise and benefit many, yet be of no use to himself.	19 E prega inoltre l'Altissimo, che diriga sicuramente la tua via.
20 Though a man may be wise, if his words are rejected he will be deprived of all enjoyment.	20 Principio d'ogni opera sia la riflessione, e ad ogni azione vada innanzi il ponderato consiglio.
21 When a man is wise to his own advantage, the fruits of his knowledge are seen in his own person;	21 Una malvagia parola muta lì cuore, da che nascono quattro cose: il bene e il male, la vita e la morte; e dominatrice di esse è costantemente la lingua. C'è l'uomo scaltro, maestro di molti, ma ch'è inutile a se stesso.
22 When a man is wise to his people's advantage, the fruits of his knowledge are enduring:	22 L'uomo sperimentato istruisce molti, ed è piacevole a se stesso.
23 Limited are the days of one man's life, but the life of Israel is days without number.	23 [C'è] chi vuol fare il saccente nel parlare, [ed] è odioso: sarà privo d'ogni cosa, [anche del pane].
24 One wise for himself has full enjoyment, and all who see him praise him;	24 Il Signore non gli ha concesso d'esser gradito, perchè privo d'ogni sapienza.
25 One wise for his people wins a heritage of glory, and his name endures forever.	25 C'è il sapiente ch'è sapiente a suo proprio vantaggio e i frutti del suo sapere son lodevoli.
26 My son, while you are well, govern your appetite so that you allow it not what is bad for you;	26 L'uomo sapiente istruisce il suo popolo, e i frutti del suo sapere sono sicuri.
27 For not every food is good for everyone, nor is everything suited to every taste.	27 L'uomo sapiente sarà ricolmo di benedizioni, e quanti lo vedono lo chiameran beato.
28 Be not drawn after every enjoyment, neither become a glutton for choice foods,	28 La vita dell'uomo è un certo numero di giorni, ma i giorni d'Israele son senza numero.
29 For sickness comes with overeating, and gluttony brings on biliousness.	29 Il sapiente si acquista onore [e fiducia] presso il popolo, e il suo nome vivrà in eterno.
30 Through lack of self-control many have died, but the abstemious man prolongs his life.	30 Figliuolo, durante la tua vita saggia l'anima tua, e s'è malvagia non le dar potere.
	31 Perchè non tutto conviene a tutti, e non ogni anima trova in ogni cosa soddisfazione.
	32 a Non esser -ingordo mai nel banchettare, e non ti gettare su ogni vivanda.
	33 Perchè i molti cibi cagionano gravezza, e l'insaziabilità conduce sino alla colica.
	34 Per intemperanza molti perirono, ma chi s'astiene [dagli eccessi], prolunga la vita.
