NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	BIBLIA
1 Every friend declares his friendship, but there are friends who are friends in name only.	1 Todo amigo dice: «También yo soy tu amigo», pero hay amigo que lo es sólo de nombre.
2 Is it not a sorrow unto death when your bosom companion becomes your enemy?	2 ¿No es para uno una mortal tristeza un compañero o amigo trocado en enemigo?
3 "Alas, my companion! Why were you created to blanket the earth with deceit?"	3 ¡Oh intención perversa! ¿de dónde saliste para cubrir la tierra de engaño?
4 A false friend will share your joys, but in time of trouble he stands afar off.	4 El compañero disfruta en el contento del amigo, pero al tiempo de tribulación se volverá contra él.
5 A true friend will fight with you against the foe, against your enemies he will be your shield-bearer.	5 El compañero compadece al amigo por interés, y cuando llega el combate embraza el escudo.
6 Forget not your comrade during the battle, and neglect him not when you distribute your spoils.	6 No te olvides de tu amigo en tu alma, ni pierdas su recuerdo cuando seas rico.
7 Every counselor points out a way, but some counsel ways of their own;	7 Todo consejero da consejos, pero hay quien aconseja en su interés.
8 Be on the alert when one proffers advice, find out first of all what he wants. For he may be thinking of himself alone; why should the profit fall to him?	8 Del consejero guarda tu alma, conoce primero qué necesita - porque en su propio interés dará consejo -, no sea que eche sobre ti la suerte,
9 He may tell you how good your way will be, and then stand by to watch your misfortune.	9 y te diga: «Bueno es tu camino», quedándose enfrente para ver qué te sucede.
10 Seek no advice from one who regards you with hostility; from those who envy you, keep your intentions hidden.	10 No te aconsejes del que te mira con desprecio, y de los que te envidian oculta tu consejo;
11 Speak not to a woman about her rival, nor to a coward about war, to a merchant about business, to a buyer about value, to a miser about generosity, to a cruel man about mercy, to a lazy man about work, to a seasonal laborer about the harvest, to an idle slave about a great task: pay no attention to any advice they give.	11 ni te aconsejes con mujer sobre su rival, con cobarde acerca la guerra, con negociante respecto del comercio, con comprador sobre la venta, con envidioso sobre la gratitud, con despiadado sobre la generosidad, con perezoso sobre cualquier trabajo, con temporero sobre el término de una obra, con siervo ocioso sobre un trabajo grande: no cuentes con éstos para ningún consejo.
12 Instead, associate with a religious man, who you are sure keeps the commandments; Who is like-minded with yourself and will feel for you if you fall.	12 Sino recurre siempre a un hombre piadoso, de quien sabes bien que guarda los mandamientos, cuya alma es según tu alma, y que, si caes, sufrirá contigo.
13 Then, too, heed your own heart's counsel; for what have you that you can depend on more?	13 Y mantén firme el consejo de tu corazón, que nadie es para ti más fiel que él.
14 A man's conscience can tell him his situation better than seven watchmen in a lofty tower.	14 Pues el alma del hombre puede a veces advertir más que siete vigías sentados en lo alto para vigilar.
15 Most important of all, pray to God to set your feet in the path of truth.	15 Y por encima de todo esto suplica al Altísimo, para que enderece tu camino en la verdad.
16 A word is the source of every deed; a thought, of every act.	16 Principio de toda obra es la palabra, y antes de toda acción está el consejo.
17 The root of all conduct is the mind; four branches it shoots forth:	17 Raíz de los pensamientos es el corazón, de él salen cuatro ramas:
18 Good and evil, death and life, their absolute mistress is the tongue.	18 bien y mal, vida y muerte, mas la que siempre los domina es la lengua.
19 A man may be wise and benefit many, yet be of no use to himself.	19 Hay hombre diestro que adoctrina a muchos, y para sí mismo es un inútil.
20 Though a man may be wise, if his words are rejected he will be deprived of all enjoyment.	20 Hay quien se hace el sabio en palabras y es aborrecido, y que acabará sin tener qué comer.
21 When a man is wise to his own advantage, the fruits of his knowledge are seen in his own person;	21 Pues no se le dio la gracia que viene del Señor, porque estaba vacío de toda sabiduría.
22 When a man is wise to his people's advantage, the fruits of his knowledge are enduring:	22 Hay quien para sí mismo es sabio, y los frutos de su inteligencia son, según él, dignos de fe.
23 Limited are the days of one man's life, but the life of Israel is days without number.	23 El varón sabio enseña a su pueblo, y los frutos de su inteligencia son dignos de fe.
24 One wise for himself has full enjoyment, and all who see him praise him;	24 El varón sabio es colmado de bendiciones, y le llaman feliz todos los que le ven.
25 One wise for his people wins a heritage of glory, and his name endures forever.	25 La vida del hombre tiene días contados, mas los días de Israel no tienen número.
26 My son, while you are well, govern your appetite so that you allow it not what is bad for you;	26 El sabio en su pueblo se gana la confianza, y su nombre vivirá por los siglos.
27 For not every food is good for everyone, nor is everything suited to every taste.	27 Hijo, en tu vida prueba tu alma, ve lo que es malo para ella y no se los des.
28 Be not drawn after every enjoyment, neither become a glutton for choice foods,	28 Pues no a todos les conviene todo, y no a todo el mundo le gusta lo mismo.
29 For sickness comes with overeating, and gluttony brings on biliousness.	29 No seas insaciable de todo placer, y no te abalances sobre la comida,
30 Through lack of self-control many have died, but the abstemious man prolongs his life.	30 porque en el exceso de alimento hay enfermedad, y la intemperancia acaba en cólicos.
	31 Por intemperancia han muerto muchos, pero el que se vigila prolongará su vida.
