1 Every friend declares his friendship, but there are friends who are friends in name only.	1 Ogni amico dice: "Anch'io ti sono amico", ma esiste l'amico che lo è solo di nome.
2 Is it not a sorrow unto death when your bosom companion becomes your enemy?	2 Non è forse un dolore mortale un compagno e un amico trasformatosi in nemico?
3 "Alas, my companion! Why were you created to blanket the earth with deceit?"	3 O inclinazione malvagia, da dove sei balzata, per ricoprire la terra con la tua malizia?
4 A false friend will share your joys, but in time of trouble he stands afar off.	4 Il compagno si rallegra con l'amico nella felicità, ma al momento della disgrazia gli sarà ostile.
5 A true friend will fight with you against the foe, against your enemies he will be your shield-bearer.	5 Il compagno soffre con l'amico per ragioni di stomaco, ma di fronte al conflitto prenderà lo scudo.
6 Forget not your comrade during the battle, and neglect him not when you distribute your spoils.	6 Non ti dimenticare dell'amico dell'anima tua, non scordarti di lui nella tua prosperità.
7 Every counselor points out a way, but some counsel ways of their own;	7 Ogni consigliere suggerisce consigli, ma c'è chi consiglia a proprio vantaggio.
8 Be on the alert when one proffers advice, find out first of all what he wants. For he may be thinking of himself alone; why should the profit fall to him?	8 Guàrdati da un consigliere, infòrmati quali siano le sue necessità - egli nel consigliare penserà al suo interesse - perché non getti la sorte su di te
9 He may tell you how good your way will be, and then stand by to watch your misfortune.	9 e dica: "La tua via è buona", poi si terrà in disparte per vedere quanto ti accadrà.
10 Seek no advice from one who regards you with hostility; from those who envy you, keep your intentions hidden.	10 Non consigliarti con chi ti guarda di sbieco, nascondi la tua intenzione a quanti ti invidiano.
11 Speak not to a woman about her rival, nor to a coward about war, to a merchant about business, to a buyer about value, to a miser about generosity, to a cruel man about mercy, to a lazy man about work, to a seasonal laborer about the harvest, to an idle slave about a great task: pay no attention to any advice they give.	11 Non consigliarti con una donna sulla sua rivale, con un pauroso sulla guerra, con un mercante sul commercio, con un compratore sulla vendita, con un invidioso sulla riconoscenza, con uno spietato sulla bontà di cuore, con un pigro su un'iniziativa qualsiasi, con un mercenario annuale sul raccolto, con uno schiavo pigro su un gran lavoro; non dipendere da costoro per nessun consiglio.
12 Instead, associate with a religious man, who you are sure keeps the commandments; Who is like-minded with yourself and will feel for you if you fall.	12 Invece frequenta spesso un uomo pio, che tu conosci come osservante dei comandamenti e la cui anima è come la tua anima; se tu inciampi, saprà compatirti.
13 Then, too, heed your own heart's counsel; for what have you that you can depend on more?	13 Segui il consiglio del tuo cuore, perché nessuno ti sarà più fedele di lui.
14 A man's conscience can tell him his situation better than seven watchmen in a lofty tower.	14 La coscienza di un uomo talvolta suole avvertire meglio di sette sentinelle collocate in alto per spiare.
15 Most important of all, pray to God to set your feet in the path of truth.	15 Al di sopra di tutto questo prega l'Altissimo perché guidi la tua condotta secondo verità.
16 A word is the source of every deed; a thought, of every act.	16 Principio di ogni opera è la ragione, prima di ogni azione è bene riflettere.
17 The root of all conduct is the mind; four branches it shoots forth:	17 Radice dei pensieri è il cuore, queste quattro parti ne derivano:
18 Good and evil, death and life, their absolute mistress is the tongue.	18 bene e male, vita e morte, ma su tutto domina sempre la lingua.
19 A man may be wise and benefit many, yet be of no use to himself.	19 C'è l'uomo esperto maestro di molti, ma inutile per se stesso.
20 Though a man may be wise, if his words are rejected he will be deprived of all enjoyment.	20 C'è chi posa a saggio nei discorsi ed è odioso, a costui mancherà ogni nutrimento;
21 When a man is wise to his own advantage, the fruits of his knowledge are seen in his own person;	21 non gli è stato concesso il favore del Signore, poiché è privo di ogni sapienza.
22 When a man is wise to his people's advantage, the fruits of his knowledge are enduring:	22 C'è chi è saggio solo per se stesso, i frutti della sua scienza sono sicuri.
23 Limited are the days of one man's life, but the life of Israel is days without number.	23 Un uomo saggio istruisce il suo popolo, dei frutti della sua intelligenza ci si può fidare.
24 One wise for himself has full enjoyment, and all who see him praise him;	24 Un uomo saggio è colmato di benedizioni, quanti lo vedono lo proclamano beato.
25 One wise for his people wins a heritage of glory, and his name endures forever.	25 La vita dell'uomo ha i giorni contati; ma i giorni di Israele sono senza numero.
26 My son, while you are well, govern your appetite so that you allow it not what is bad for you;	26 Il saggio otterrà fiducia tra il suo popolo, il suo nome vivrà per sempre.
27 For not every food is good for everyone, nor is everything suited to every taste.	27 Figlio, nella tua vita prova te stesso, vedi quanto ti nuoce e non concedertelo.
28 Be not drawn after every enjoyment, neither become a glutton for choice foods,	28 Difatti non tutto conviene a tutti e non tutti approvano ogni cosa.
29 For sickness comes with overeating, and gluttony brings on biliousness.	29 Non essere ingordo per qualsiasi ghiottoneria, non ti gettare sulle vivande,
30 Through lack of self-control many have died, but the abstemious man prolongs his life.	30 perché l'abuso dei cibi causa malattie, l'ingordigia provoca coliche. Molti sono morti per ingordigia, chi si controlla vivrà a lungo.
