1 I said to myself, "Come, now, let me try you with pleasure and the enjoyment of good things." But behold, this too was vanity.	1 Então eu disse no meu coração: Vamos! Tentemos a alegria, gozemos o prazer. Mas vi que também isto era vaidade.
2 Of laughter I said: "Mad!" and of mirth: "What good does this do?"	2 Por isso disse ao riso: És um louco! e à alegria; De que serves?
3 I thought of beguiling my senses with wine, though my mind was concerned with wisdom, and of taking up folly, until I should understand what is best for men to do under the heavens during the limited days of their life.	3 (Em seguida) resolvi dentro no meu coração entregar ao vinho a minha carne, aplicando ainda o meu ânimo à sabedoria; (resolvi) dar-me (dentro de certos limites) à loucura, até ver que coisa seria útil aos filhos dos homens, em que ocupação devem eles empregar-se debaixo dos céus durante os dias da sua vida.
4 I undertook great works; I built myself houses and planted vineyards;	4 Executei grandes obras, edifiquei para mim casas e plantei vinhas;
5 I made gardens and parks, and set out in them fruit trees of all sorts.	5 fiz jardins e pomares, e pus neles árvores de toda a espécie;
6 And I constructed for myself reservoirs to water a flourishing woodland.	6 construí depósitos de águas para regar o bosque em que cresciam as árvores;
7 I acquired male and female slaves, and slaves were born in my house. I also had growing herds of cattle and flocks of sheep, more than all who had been before me in Jerusalem.	7 comprei escravos e escravas, e tive muita família; tive multo gado, manadas de bois e rebanhos de ovelhas, mais do que todos os que houve antes de mim em Jerusalém.
8 I amassed for myself silver and gold, and the wealth of kings and provinces. I got for myself male and female singers and all human luxuries.	8 Amontoei prata e ouro, riquezas de reis e de províncias. (Para me deleitarem os ouvidos) escolhi cantores e cantoras, e tudo o que faz as delícias dos filhos dos homens, taças e jarros (preciosos) para o serviço do vinho.
9 I became great, and I stored up more than all others before me in Jerusalem; my wisdom, too, stayed with me.	9 Ultrapassei em grandeza todos os que viveram antes de mim em Jerusalém, conservando, porém, a minha sabedoria.
10 Nothing that my eyes desired did I deny them, nor did I deprive myself of any joy, but my heart rejoiced in the fruit of all my toil. This was my share for all my toil.	10 Não recusei aos meus olhos coisa alguma de tudo o que eles desejaram; nem proibi ao meu coração que gozasse de todo o prazer, e se deleitasse nas coisas que eu lhe tinha preparado; e julguei que seria esta a minha sorte, o disfrutar do meu trabalho.
11 But when I turned to all the works that my hands had wrought, and to the toil at which I had taken such pains, behold! all was vanity and a chase after wind, with nothing gained under the sun.	11 Depois, reflectindo em todas as obras que as minhas mãos tinham feito, e nos trabalhos em que eu debalde tinha suado, vi em tudo vaidade e aflição de espirito (reconheci) que nada havia de proveito debaixo do sol.
12 For what will the man do who is to come after the king? What men have already done! I went on to the consideration of wisdom, madness and folly.	12 Passei à contemplação da sabedoria, dos desvarios, e da loucura. Qual é o homem que virá depois do rei, que há muito tempo foi designado?
13 And I saw that wisdom has the advantage over folly as much as light has the advantage over darkness.	13 E reconheci que a sabedoria leva tanta vantagem sobre a loucura, quanta a luz sobre as trevas.
14 The wise man has eyes in his head, but the fool walks in darkness.Yet I knew that one lot befalls both of them.	14 Os olhos do sábio estão na sua cabeça; o Insensato anda nas trevas.
15 So I said to myself, if the fool's lot is to befall me also, why then should I be wise? Where is the profit for me? And I concluded in my heart that this too is vanity.	15 Todavia reconheci que ambos têm a mesma sorte e disse dentro no meu coração; Se eu e o insensato devemos ter a mesma sorte, igualmente, de que me serve toda a minha sabedoria? E adverti que também isto era vaidade.
16 Neither of the wise man nor of the fool will there be an abiding remembrance, for in days to come both will have been forgotten. How is it that the wise man dies as well as the fool!	16 Porque a memória do sábio, do mesmo modo que a do Insensato, não será eterna, e os tempos futuros sepultarão tudo igualmente no esquecimento. Tanto morre o sábio como ignorante.
17 Therefore I loathed life, since for me the work that is done under the sun is evil; for all is vanity and a chase after wind.	17 E por isso a minha vida se me tornou fastidiosa, vendo que tudo é mau debaixo do sol, que tudo é vaidade e aflição de espírito.
18 And I detested all the fruits of my labor under the sun, because I must leave them to a man who is to come after me.	18 Em conseqüência disto detestei toda aquela aplicação, com que eu tinha trabalhado tanto debaixo do sol, porque tudo hei-de deixar ao que vier depois de mim.
19 And who knows whether he will be a wise man or a fool? Yet he will have control over all the fruits of my wise labor under the sun. This also is vanity.	19 E quem pode saber se esse será sábio ou insensato? Contudo será senhor dos meus trabalhos, que me custaram cuidados e sabedoria.
20 So my feelings turned to despair of all the fruits of my labor under the sun.	20 Por este motivo dei de mão a todas estas coisas, e o meu coração renunciou a afadigar-se mais por nada deste mundo.
21 For here is a man who has labored with wisdom and knowledge and skill, and to another, who has not labored over it, he must leave his property. This also is vanity and a great misfortune.	21 Com efeito, que um homem trabalhe com sabedoria, ciência e feliz êxito, para deixar o fruto do seu trabalho a outro que nenhuma colaboração prestou, é uma coisa vã e uma grande desgraça.
22 For what profit comes to a man from all the toil and anxiety of heart with which he has labored under the sun?	22 Que proveito tirará o homem de todo o seu trabalho e aflição de espírito, com que é atormentado debaixo do sol?
23 All his days sorrow and grief are his occupation; even at night his mind is not at rest. This also is vanity.	23 Todos os seus dias são cheios de dores e de amarguras, e nem de noite descansa o seu coração. E não é isto uma vaidade (ou miséria)?
24 There is nothing better for man than to eat and drink and provide himself with good things by his labors. Even this, I realized, is from the hand of God.	24 Nada há melhor para o homem que comer e beber e gozar o bem-estar, fruto do seu trabalho. Mas também isto vem da mão de Deus.
25 For who can eat or drink apart from him?	25 Quem, com efeito, pode comer e gozar bem-estar sem ele? (E todavia sou infeliz).
26 For to whatever man he sees fit he gives wisdom and knowledge and joy; but to the sinner he gives the task of gathering possessions to be given to whatever man God sees fit. This also is vanity and a chase after wind.	26 Ele (Deus) ao homem que lhe é agradável, dá sabedoria, e ciência e alegria; mas ao pecador dá aflição e cuidado de recolher e acumular bens, para os deixar a quem Deus quiser. E também isto é vaidade e tormento do espirito.
