1 A maskil of Asaph. Attend, my people, to my teaching; listen to the words of my mouth.	1 Maskil. Di Asaf. O popolo mio, presta attenzione al mio insegnamento, porgi il tuo orecchio alle parole della mia bocca.
2 I will open my mouth in story, drawing lessons from of old.	2 Voglio aprire la mia bocca per proferire parabole, rievocare gli arcani dei tempi antichi.
3 We have heard them, we know them; our ancestors have recited them to us.	3 Quello che abbiamo udito e appreso, quello che ci narrarono i nostri padri
4 We do not keep them from our children; we recite them to the next generation, The praiseworthy and mighty deeds of the LORD, the wonders that he performed.	4 non terremo nascosto ai loro figli, bensì sempre narreremo alla generazione futura le lodi del Signore e la sua potenza e le meraviglie che egli ha compiuto.
5 God set up a decree in Jacob, established a law in Israel: What he commanded our ancestors, they were to teach their children;	5 Ha stabilito una testimonianza in Giacobbe, ha posto una legge in Israele, con la quale ha comandato ai nostri padri di farle conoscere ai loro figli,
6 That the next generation might come to know, children yet to be born. In turn they were to recite them to their children,	6 affinché le apprenda la generazione futura e i figli che nasceranno sorgano a narrarle ai loro figli,
7 that they too might put their trust in God, And not forget the works of God, keeping his commandments.	7 e pongano in Dio la loro fiducia e non dimentichino le opere divine, ma osservino i suoi precetti,
8 They were not to be like their ancestors, a rebellious and defiant generation, A generation whose heart was not constant, whose spirit was not faithful to God,	8 e non siano come i loro padri, generazione caparbia e ribelle, il cui cuore non fu costante e il cui spirito non fu fedele a Dio.
9 Like the ranks of Ephraimite archers, who retreated on the day of battle.	9 I figli di Efraim che tendono e scoccano l'arco, si voltarono indietro nel giorno della battaglia.
10 They did not keep God's covenant; they refused to walk by his law.	10 Non osservarono l'alleanza di Dio, si rifiutarono di camminare nella sua legge.
11 They forgot his works, the wondrous deeds he had shown them.	11 Dimenticarono le sue opere, le meraviglie che aveva loro mostrato.
12 In the sight of their ancestors God did wonders, in the land of Egypt, the plain of Zoan.	12 Davanti ai loro padri egli fece prodigi nel paese d'Egitto, nella campagna di Tanis.
13 He split the sea and led them across, piling up the waters rigid as walls.	13 Divise il mare e li fece passare, e le acque ristettero come trattenute da un argine.
14 God led them with a cloud by day, all night with the light of fire.	14 Li guidò con una nube di giorno e tutta la notte con bagliore di fuoco.
15 He split rock in the desert, gave water to drink, abounding as the deep.	15 Percosse rupi nel deserto e diede loro da bere come dal grande abisso.
16 He made streams flow from crags, drew out rivers of water.	16 Fece scaturire ruscelli dalla roccia, fece scorrere acqua a torrenti.
17 But they went on sinning against him, rebelling against the Most High in the desert.	17 Eppure quelli peccarono di nuovo contro di lui ribellandosi contro l'Altissimo nel deserto.
18 They tested God in their hearts, demanding the food they craved.	18 Tentarono Dio nel loro cuore chiedendo cibo per le loro brame.
19 They spoke against God, and said, "Can God spread a table in the desert?	19 Mormorarono contro Dio dicendo: "Potrà forse Dio imbandire una mensa nel deserto?".
20 True, when he struck the rock, water gushed forth, the wadis flooded. But can he also provide bread, give meat to his people?"	20 Ecco: percosse una rupe, ne scaturì acqua e strariparono torrenti. "Potrà forse dare anche del pane o procurare carne per il suo popolo?".
21 The LORD heard and grew angry; fire blazed up against Jacob; anger flared up against Israel.	21 Li udì il Signore e ne fu irritato e un fuoco divampò contro Giacobbe e l'ira esplose contro Israele,
22 For they did not believe in God, did not trust in his saving power.	22 poiché non ebbero fede in Dio e non ebbero speranza nella sua salvezza.
23 So he commanded the skies above; the doors of heaven he opened.	23 Tuttavia comandò alle nubi dall'alto e aprì le porte del cielo
24 God rained manna upon them for food; bread from heaven he gave them.	24 e fece piovere su di loro manna da mangiare, un frumento celeste diede loro.
25 All ate a meal fit for heroes; food he sent in abundance.	25 Un pane di forti mangiò ciascuno, una provvigione abbondante inviò per loro.
26 He stirred up the east wind in the heavens; by his power God brought on the south wind.	26 Scatenò dal cielo il vento d'oriente, fece soffiare con veemenza il vento del sud;
27 He rained meat upon them like dust, winged fowl like the sands of the sea,	27 fece piovere su di essi carne come polvere e come sabbia del mare volatili;
28 Brought them down in the midst of the camp, round about their tents.	28 li fece cadere in mezzo al loro accampamento, tutt'intorno alle loro tende.
29 They ate and were well filled; he gave them what they had craved.	29 Essi ne mangiarono e rimasero ben sazi, furono soddisfatti nel loro desiderio.
30 But while they still wanted more, and the food was still in their mouths,	30 Non si erano nauseati della loro brama, il loro cibo era ancora nella loro bocca,
31 God's anger attacked them, killed their best warriors, laid low the youth of Israel.	31 e l'ira del Signore piombò su di loro, fece strage fra essi dei più vigorosi e abbatté fra i più scelti d'Israele.
32 In spite of all this they went on sinning, they did not believe in his wonders.	32 Con tutto questo peccarono ancora, non prestarono fede ai suoi prodigi.
33 God ended their days abruptly, their years in sudden death.	33 Allora dissipò come polvere i loro giorni e con terrore improvviso i loro anni.
34 When he slew them, they began to seek him; they again inquired of their God.	34 Quando li faceva morire, lo cercavano, si convertivano e si rivolgevano a Dio;
35 They remembered that God was their rock, God Most High, their redeemer.	35 si ricordavano che soltanto Dio era la loro roccia, Dio l'Altissimo, il loro redentore.
36 But they deceived him with their mouths, lied to him with their tongues.	36 Ma essi lo lusingavano con la loro bocca, lo ingannavano con la loro lingua,
37 Their hearts were not constant toward him; they were not faithful to his covenant.	37 mentre il loro cuore non era sincero con lui e non si mostravano fedeli alla sua alleanza.
38 But God is merciful and forgave their sin; he did not utterly destroy them. Time and again he turned back his anger, unwilling to unleash all his rage.	38 Ed egli si lasciava impietosire e perdonava la colpa e non li distruggeva. Molte volte tratteneva la sua ira e non suscitava tutto il suo furore;
39 He was mindful that they were flesh, a breath that passes and does not return.	39 si ricordava che essi erano esseri mortali, un soffio che va e non ritorna.
40 How often they rebelled against God in the desert, grieved him in the wasteland.	40 Quante volte nel deserto si ribellarono a Dio, quante volte lo irritarono nella steppa!
41 Again and again they tested God, provoked the Holy One of Israel.	41 Ripetutamente tentarono Dio, esasperarono il Santo d'Israele.
42 They did not remember his power, the day he redeemed them from the foe,	42 Non si ricordarono della sua potenza, del giorno in cui li riscattò dall'oppressione,
43 When he displayed his wonders in Egypt, his marvels in the plain of Zoan.	43 di lui che fece prodigi in Egitto e portenti nella campagna di Tanis.
44 God changed their rivers to blood; their streams they could not drink.	44 Mutò infatti i loro fiumi in sangue affinché non bevessero dai loro ruscelli.
45 He sent insects that devoured them, frogs that destroyed them.	45 Mandò in mezzo a loro tafani che li divorassero e rane che li molestassero.
46 He gave their harvest to the caterpillar, the fruits of their labor to the locust.	46 Diede alle locuste i loro raccolti e ai bruchi il frutto delle loro fatiche.
47 He killed their vines with hail, their sycamores with frost.	47 Distrusse con la grandine i loro vigneti e i loro sicomori con la brina.
48 He exposed their flocks to deadly hail, their cattle to lightning.	48 Consegnò alla peste il loro bestiame e alle saette i loro averi.
49 He unleashed against them his fiery breath, roar, fury, and distress, storming messengers of death.	49 Scatenò fra essi il furore della sua ira: collera, sdegno e sventura con l'invio di messaggeri di rovina.
50 He cleared a path for his anger; he did not spare them from death; he delivered their beasts to the plague.	50 Lasciò alla sua ira tutto il suo corso, la loro anima non risparmiò dalla morte e diede la loro vita in preda alla peste;
51 He struck all the firstborn of Egypt, love's first child in the tents of Ham.	51 e colpì in Egitto ogni primogenito, la primizia del loro vigore nelle tende di Cam.
52 God led forth his people like sheep; he guided them through the desert like a flock.	52 E portò via il suo popolo come un gregge e come una mandria lo condusse nel deserto.
53 He led them on secure and unafraid, but the sea enveloped their enemies.	53 Li guidò al sicuro, sì che non avessero paura, mentre i loro nemici li sommerse il mare.
54 He brought them to his holy land, the mountain his right hand had won.	54 Li fece giungere alla sua santa regione, al monte che la sua destra si era acquistato.
55 God drove out the nations before them, apportioned them a heritage by lot, settled the tribes of Israel in their tents.	55 Scacciò le genti davanti a loro e distribuì con la sorte l'eredità fra loro e fece abitare nelle loro tende le tribù d'Israele.
56 But they tested, rebelled against God Most High, his decrees they did not observe.	56 E ancora lo tentarono, si ribellarono a Dio, l'Altissimo, e non osservarono i suoi precetti.
57 They turned back, deceitful like their ancestors; they proved false like a bow with no tension.	57 Deviarono, si mostrarono infedeli come i loro padri, vennero meno, come un arco che fallisce.
58 They enraged him with their high places; with their idols they goaded him.	58 Lo provocarono con le loro alture e con i loro idoli l'ingelosirono.
59 God heard and grew angry; he rejected Israel completely.	59 Dio udì e ne fu irritato e rigettò Israele completamente.
60 He forsook the shrine at Shiloh, the tent where he dwelt with humans.	60 Abbandonò il tabernacolo di Silo, la tenda della sua dimora fra gli uomini.
61 He gave up his might into captivity, his glorious ark into the hands of the foe.	61 Ridusse in schiavitù il suo vigore, la sua gloria in potere del nemico.
62 God abandoned his people to the sword; he was enraged against his heritage.	62 Consegnò alla spada il suo popolo, si adirò contro la sua eredità.
63 Fire consumed their young men; their young women heard no wedding songs.	63 Divorò il fuoco la sua gioventù e le sue vergini non ne fecero lamento.
64 Their priests fell by the sword; their widows made no lamentation.	64 I suoi sacerdoti caddero di spada e le sue vedove non ne fecero lutto.
65 Then the Lord awoke as from sleep, like a warrior from the effects of wine.	65 Ma poi si destò il Signore come da un sonno, come un prode assopito nel vino.
66 He put his enemies to flight; everlasting shame he dealt them.	66 E colpì alle spalle i suoi nemici, li ricoprì d'eterna ignominia.
67 He rejected the tent of Joseph, chose not the tribe of Ephraim.	67 Ripudiò la tenda di Giuseppe e sulla tribù di Efraim non cadde la sua scelta.
68 God chose the tribe of Judah, Mount Zion which he favored.	68 Scelse invece la tribù di Giuda, il monte Sion, l'oggetto del suo amore.
69 He built his shrine like the heavens, like the earth which he founded forever.	69 Costruì il suo santuario come il cielo e come la terra lo rese stabile in eterno.
70 He chose David his servant, took him from the sheepfold.	70 Si scelse Davide, suo servo, e lo assunse da ovili di pecore;
71 From tending sheep God brought him, to shepherd Jacob, his people, Israel, his heritage.	71 da dietro le pecore allattanti lo chiamò, perché pascesse Giacobbe, suo popolo, e Israele, la sua eredità.
72 He shepherded them with a pure heart; with skilled hands he guided them.	72 Egli lo fece pascere secondo l'integrità del suo cuore e fu loro guida con la destrezza delle sue mani.
