When Israel came forth from Egypt, the house of Jacob from an alien people,1 Al eluia! When Israel came out of Egypt, the House of Jacob from a people of foreign speech,
Judah became God's holy place, Israel, God's domain.2 Judah became his sanctuary, and Israel his domain.
The sea beheld and fled; the Jordan turned back.3 The sea fled at the sight, the Jordan turned back,
The mountains skipped like rams; the hills, like lambs of the flock.4 the mountains skipped like rams, the hil s like sheep.
Why was it, sea, that you fled? Jordan, that you turned back?5 Sea, what makes you flee? Jordan, why turn back?
You mountains, that you skipped like rams? You hills, like lambs of the flock?6 Why skip like rams, you mountains? Why like sheep, you hills?
Tremble, earth, before the Lord, before the God of Jacob,7 Tremble, earth, at the coming of the Lord, at the coming of the God of Jacob,
Who turned rock into pools of water, stone into flowing springs.8 who turns rock into pool, flint into fountain.
