Job 42

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Then Job answered the LORD and said:	1 This was the answer Job gave to Yahweh:
2 I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be hindered.	2 I know that you are al -powerful: what you conceive, you can perform.
3 I have dealt with great things that I do not understand; things too wonderful for me, which I cannot know.	3 I was the man who misrepresented your intentions with my ignorant words. You have told me aboutgreat works that I cannot understand, about marvels which are beyond me, of which I know nothing.
	4 (Listen, please, and let me speak: I am going to ask the questions, and you are to inform me.)
5 I had heard of you by word of mouth, but now my eye has seen you.	5 Before, I knew you only by hearsay but now, having seen you with my own eyes,
6 Therefore I disown what I have said, and repent in dust and ashes.	6 I retract what I have said, and repent in dust and ashes.
7 And it came to pass after the LORD had spoken these words to Job, that the LORD said to Eliphaz the Temanite, "I am angry with you and with your two friends; for you have not spoken rightly concerning me, as has my servant Job.	7 When Yahweh had finished saying this to Job, he said to Eliphaz of Teman, 'I burn with anger against you and your two friends, for not having spoken correctly about me as my servant Job has done.
8 Now, therefore, take seven bullocks and seven rams, and go to my servant Job, and offer up a holocaust for yourselves; and let my servant Job pray for you; for his prayer I will accept, not to punish you severely. For you have not spoken rightly concerning me, as has my servant Job."	8 So now find seven bul ocks and seven rams, and take them back with you to my servant Job andmake a burnt offering for yourselves, while Job, my servant, offers prayers for you. I shal show him favour andshall not inflict my displeasure on you for not having spoken about me correctly, as my servant Job has done.'
9 Then Eliphaz the Temanite, and Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite, went and did as the LORD had commanded them. And the LORD accepted the intercession of Job.	9 Eliphaz of Teman, Bildad of Shuah and Zophar of Naamath went away to do as Yahweh had ordered,and Yahweh listened to Job with favour.
10 Also, the LORD restored the prosperity of Job, after he had prayed for his friends; the LORD even gave to Job twice as much as he had before.	10 And Yahweh restored Job's condition, while Job was interceding for his friends. More than that,Yahweh gave him double what he had before.
11 Then all his brethren and his sisters came to him, and all his former acquaintances, and they dined with him in his house. They condoled with him and comforted him for all the evil which the LORD had brought upon him; and each one gave him a piece of money and a gold ring.	11 And al his brothers and all his sisters and al his friends of former times came to see him. Over dinnerin his house, they showed their sympathy and comforted him for al the evils Yahweh had inflicted on him. Eachof them gave him a silver coin, and each a gold ring.
12 Thus the LORD blessed the latter days of Job more than his earlier ones. For he had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen, and a thousand she-asses.	12 Yahweh blessed Job's latter condition even more than his former one. He came to own fourteenthousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen and a thousand she-donkeys.
13 And he had seven sons and three daughters,	13 He had seven sons and three daughters;
14 of whom he called the first Jemimah, the second Keziah, and the third Keren-happuch.	14 his first daughter he cal ed 'Turtledove', the second 'Cassia' and the third 'Mascara'.
15 In all the land no other women were as beautiful as the daughters of Job; and their father gave them an inheritance among their brethren.	15 Throughout the land there were no women as beautiful as the daughters of Job. And their father gavethem inheritance rights like their brothers.
16 After this, Job lived a hundred and forty years; and he saw his children, his grandchildren, and even his great-grandchildren.	16 After this, Job lived for another one hundred and forty years, and saw his children and his children'schildren to the fourth generation.
17 Then Job died, old and full of years.	17 Then, old and ful of days, Job died.
