Job 22

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	SAGRADA BIBLIA
1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said:	1 Elifaz de Temã tomou a palavra nestes termos:
2 Can a man be profitable to God? Though to himself a wise man be profitable!	2 Pode o homem ser útil a Deus? O sábio só é útil a si mesmo.
3 Is it of advantage to the Almighty if you are just? Or is it a gain to him if you make your ways perfect?	3 De que serve ao Todo-poderoso que tu sejas justo? Tem ele interesse que teu proceder seja íntegro?
4 Is it because of your piety that he reproves you-- that he enters with you into judgment?	4 É por causa de tua piedade que ele te pune, e entra contigo em juízo?
5 Is not your wickedness manifold? Are not your iniquities endless?	5 Não é enorme a tua malícia, e não são inumeráveis as tuas iniqüidades?
6 You have unjustly kept your kinsmen's goods in pawn, left them stripped naked of their clothing.	6 Sem causa tomaste penhores a teus irmãos, despojaste de suas vestes os miseráveis;
7 To the thirsty you have given no water to drink, and from the hungry you have withheld bread;	7 não davas água ao sedento, recusavas o pão ao esfomeado.
8 As if the land belonged to the man of might, and only the privileged were to dwell in it.	8 A terra era do mais forte, e o protegido é que nela se estabelecia.
9 You have sent widows away empty-handed, and the resources of orphans you have destroyed.	9 Despedias as viúvas com as mãos vazias, quebravas os braços dos órfãos.
10 Therefore snares are round about you, and a sudden terror causes you dismay,	10 Eis por que estás cercado de laços, e os terrores súbitos te amedrontam.
11 Or darkness, in which you cannot see; a deluge of waters covers you.	11 A luz obscureceu-se; já não vês nada; e o dilúvio águas te engole.
12 Does not God, in the heights of the heavens, behold the stars, high though they are?	12 Não está Deus nas alturas dos céus? Vê a cabeça das estrelas como está alta!
13 Yet you say, "What does God know? Can he judge through the thick darkness?	13 E dizes: Que sabe Deus? Pode ele julgar através da nuvem opaca?
14 Clouds hide him so that he cannot see; he walks upon the vault of the heavens!"	14 As nuvens formam um véu que o impede de ver; ele passeia pela abóbada do céu.
15 Do you indeed keep to the ancient way trodden by worthless men,	15 Segues, pois, rotas antigas por onde andavam os homens iníquos
16 Who were snatched away before their time; whose foundations a flood swept away?	16 que foram arrebatados antes do tempo, e cujos fundamentos foram arrastados com as águas,
17 These men said to God, "Depart from us!" and, "What can the Almighty do to us?"	17 e que diziam a Deus: Retira-te de nós, que poderia fazer-nos o Todo-poderoso?
18 (Yet he had filled their houses with good things! But far be from me the mind of the impious!)	18 Foi ele, entretanto, que lhes cumulou de bens as casas; - longe de mim os conselhos dos maus! -
19 The just look on and are gladdened, and the innocent deride them:	19 Vendo-os, os justos se alegram, e o inocente zomba deles:
20 "Truly these have been destroyed where they stood, and such as were left, fire has consumed!"	20 Nossos inimigos estão aniquilados, e o fogo devorou-lhes as riquezas!
21 Come to terms with him to be at peace. In this shall good come to you:	21 Reconcilia-te, pois, com {Deus} e faz as pazes com ele, é assim que te será de novo dada a felicidade;
22 Receive instruction from his mouth, and lay up his words in your heart.	22 aceita a instrução de sua boca, e põe suas palavras em teu coração.
23 If you return to the Almighty, you will be restored; if you put iniquity far from your tent,	23 Se te voltares humildemente para o Todo-poderoso, se afastares a iniqüidade de tua tenda,
24 And treat raw gold like dust, and the fine gold of Ophir as pebbles from the brook,	24 se atirares as barras de ouro ao pó, e o ouro de Ofir entre os pedregulhos da torrente,
25 Then the Almighty himself shall be your gold and your sparkling silver.	25 o Todo-poderoso será teu ouro e um monte de prata para ti.
26 For then you shall delight in the Almighty and you shall lift up your face toward God.	26 Então farás do Todo-poderoso as tuas delícias, e levantarás teu rosto a Deus.
27 You shall entreat him and he will hear you, and your vows you shall fulfill.	27 Tu lhe rogarás, e ele te ouvirá, e cumprirás os teus votos:
28 When you make a decision, it shall succeed for you, and upon your ways the light shall shine.	28 formarás os teus projetos, que terão feliz êxito, e a luz brilhará em tuas veredas.
29 For he brings down the pride of the haughty, but the man of humble mien he saves.	29 Pois Deus abaixa o altivo e o orgulhoso, mas socorre aquele que abaixa os olhos.
30 God delivers him who is innocent; you shall be delivered through cleanness of hands.	30 Salva o inocente, o qual é libertado pela pureza de suas mãos.
