1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said:	1 Eliphaz di Theman allor prese a dire:
2 Can a man be profitable to God? Though to himself a wise man be profitable!	2 Può egli agguagliarsi a Dio un uomo, quand'anche avesse una scienza perfetta?
3 Is it of advantage to the Almighty if you are just? Or is it a gain to him if you make your ways perfect?	3 Torna egli forse in vantaggio di Dio se tu sarai giusto? E che aggiungi tu a lui se immacolata sarà la tua vita?
4 Is it because of your piety that he reproves you-- that he enters with you into judgment?	4 Forse per timor ch'egli abbia ti accuserà, e verrà teco in giudizio?
5 Is not your wickedness manifold? Are not your iniquities endless?	5 E non fa egli questo per le moltissime tue malvagità, e per le infinite tue colpe?
6 You have unjustly kept your kinsmen's goods in pawn, left them stripped naked of their clothing.	6 Perocché tu portasti via senza ragione il pegno de' tuoi fratelli, e spogliasti i meschini delle lor vesti.
7 To the thirsty you have given no water to drink, and from the hungry you have withheld bread;	7 Non desti acqua al sitibondo, e pane negasti all'affamato.
8 As if the land belonged to the man of might, and only the privileged were to dwell in it.	8 Colla forza del tuo braccio entrasti in possesso della terra, e potendone più degli altri in essa regnavi.
9 You have sent widows away empty-handed, and the resources of orphans you have destroyed.	9 Le vedove rimandasti indietro senza far loro ragione, e i pupilli privasti d'ogni sostegno.
10 Therefore snares are round about you, and a sudden terror causes you dismay,	10 Per questo se' cinto di lacci, e turbato da repentini terrori.
11 Or darkness, in which you cannot see; a deluge of waters covers you.	11 E credevi che non avresti veduto mai tenebre, né saresti oppresso da tale impetuosa piena d'acque?
12 Does not God, in the heights of the heavens, behold the stars, high though they are?	12 Pensi tu forse, che Dio è più sublime del cielo, e ch'ei sormonta l'altezza delle stelle?
13 Yet you say, "What does God know? Can he judge through the thick darkness?	13 Onde dici: Che può egli sapere Dio? Egli giudica quasi all'oscuro.
14 Clouds hide him so that he cannot see; he walks upon the vault of the heavens!"	14 Suo nascondiglio sono le nuvole, né alle cose, nostre egli pon mente, e attorno ai cardini del cielo passeggia.
15 Do you indeed keep to the ancient way trodden by worthless men,	15 Vuoi tu forse camminare per quella antica strada, che fu battuta dagli empj?
16 Who were snatched away before their time; whose foundations a flood swept away?	16 I quali furon rapiti prima del loro tempo, e la fiumana roversciò i lor fondamenti:
17 These men said to God, "Depart from us!" and, "What can the Almighty do to us?"	17 I quali dicevano a Dio: Vattene da noi: e dell'Onnipotente tal avean concetto, come se nulla potesse:
18 (Yet he had filled their houses with good things! But far be from me the mind of the impious!)	18 Mentre egli le case loro avea riempiute di beni. Lungi da me l'opinion di coloro.
19 The just look on and are gladdened, and the innocent deride them:	19 I giusti vedranno, e ne avranno allegrezza, e l'innocente gli schernirà.
20 "Truly these have been destroyed where they stood, and such as were left, fire has consumed!"	20 Non è ella stata gettata a terra la loro altezza, e i loro avanzi non son eglino stati consunti dal fuoco?
21 Come to terms with him to be at peace. In this shall good come to you:	21 Adattati adunque a lui, e avrei pace, e da ciò raccorrai ottimi frutti.
22 Receive instruction from his mouth, and lay up his words in your heart.	22 Dalla bocca di lui prendi legge, e nel cuor tuo imprimi le sue parole.
23 If you return to the Almighty, you will be restored; if you put iniquity far from your tent,	23 Se tornerai all'Onnipotente ti rimetterai in piedi, e rimoverai dalla tua casa l'iniquità.
24 And treat raw gold like dust, and the fine gold of Ophir as pebbles from the brook,	24 In vece di terra egli ti darà vivo masso, e in cambio di pietre, torrenti di oro.
25 Then the Almighty himself shall be your gold and your sparkling silver.	25 L'Onnipotente sarà teco contro de' tuoi nemici, e avrai l'argento a masse.
26 For then you shall delight in the Almighty and you shall lift up your face toward God.	26 Allora nell'Onnipotente troverai copia di delizie, e alzerai a Dio la tua faccia.
27 You shall entreat him and he will hear you, and your vows you shall fulfill.	27 Lo pregherai, ed egli ti esaudirà, e scioglierai i tuoi voti.
28 When you make a decision, it shall succeed for you, and upon your ways the light shall shine.	28 Risolverai una cosa, e sarà ridotta ad effetto, e le tue vie saran luminose.
29 For he brings down the pride of the haughty, but the man of humble mien he saves.	29 Perocché chi fu umiliato sarà in gloria, e chi portò gli occhi bassi sarà salvato.
30 God delivers him who is innocent; you shall be delivered through cleanness of hands.	30 Sarà salvo l'innocente, e sarà salvo per la purezza delle sue mani.
