1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said:	1 ED Elifaz Temanita rispose e disse:
2 Can a man be profitable to God? Though to himself a wise man be profitable!	2 L’uomo può egli fare alcun profitto a Dio? Anzi a sè stesso fa profitto l’uomo intendente.
3 Is it of advantage to the Almighty if you are just? Or is it a gain to him if you make your ways perfect?	3 L’Onnipotente riceve egli alcun diletto, se tu sei giusto? O alcun guadagno, se tu cammini in integrità?
4 Is it because of your piety that he reproves you-- that he enters with you into judgment?	4 Ti castiga egli per paura che abbia di te? O viene egli teco a giudicio?
5 Is not your wickedness manifold? Are not your iniquities endless?	5 La tua malvagità non è essa grande? E le tue iniquità non son esse senza fine?
6 You have unjustly kept your kinsmen's goods in pawn, left them stripped naked of their clothing.	6 Conciossiachè tu abbi preso pegno da’ tuoi fratelli senza cagione, Ed abbi spogliati gl’ignudi de’ lor vestimenti.
7 To the thirsty you have given no water to drink, and from the hungry you have withheld bread;	7 Tu non hai pur dato a bere dell’acqua allo stanco, Ed hai rifiutato il pane all’affamato.
8 As if the land belonged to the man of might, and only the privileged were to dwell in it.	8 Ma la terra è stata per l’uomo possente, E l’uomo di rispetto è abitato in essa.
9 You have sent widows away empty-handed, and the resources of orphans you have destroyed.	9 Tu hai rimandate le vedove a vuoto, E le braccia degli orfani son da te state fiaccate.
10 Therefore snares are round about you, and a sudden terror causes you dismay,	10 Perciò tu hai de’ lacci d’intorno, Ed uno spavento di subito ti ha conturbato.
11 Or darkness, in which you cannot see; a deluge of waters covers you.	11 Tu hai eziandio delle tenebre d’intorno, sì che tu non puoi vedere; Ed una piena d’acque ti ha coperto.
12 Does not God, in the heights of the heavens, behold the stars, high though they are?	12 Iddio non è egli nell’alto de’ cieli? Riguarda il sommo delle stelle, come sono eccelse.
13 Yet you say, "What does God know? Can he judge through the thick darkness?	13 E pur tu hai detto: Che cosa conosce Iddio? Giudicherà egli per mezzo la caligine?
14 Clouds hide him so that he cannot see; he walks upon the vault of the heavens!"	14 Le nuvole gli sono un nascondimento, ed egli non vede nulla, E passeggia per lo giro del cielo
15 Do you indeed keep to the ancient way trodden by worthless men,	15 Hai tu posto mente al cammino Che gli uomini iniqui hanno tenuto d’ogni tempo?
16 Who were snatched away before their time; whose foundations a flood swept away?	16 I quali sono stati ricisi fuor di tempo, E il cui fondamento è scorso come un fiume;
17 These men said to God, "Depart from us!" and, "What can the Almighty do to us?"	17 I quali dicevano a Dio: Dipartiti da noi. E che avea loro fatto l’Onnipotente?
18 (Yet he had filled their houses with good things! But far be from me the mind of the impious!)	18 Egli avea loro ripiene le case di beni; Per ciò, sia lungi da me il consiglio degli empi.
19 The just look on and are gladdened, and the innocent deride them:	19 I giusti vedranno queste cose, e se ne rallegreranno; E l’innocente si befferà di coloro.
20 "Truly these have been destroyed where they stood, and such as were left, fire has consumed!"	20 Se la nostra sostanza non è stata distrutta, Pure ha il fuoco consumato il lor rimanente
21 Come to terms with him to be at peace. In this shall good come to you:	21 Deh! fa’ conoscenza con Dio, e rappacificati con lui; Per questo mezzo ti avverrà il bene.
22 Receive instruction from his mouth, and lay up his words in your heart.	22 Deh! ricevi la legge dalla sua bocca, E riponi le sue parole nel cuor tuo.
23 If you return to the Almighty, you will be restored; if you put iniquity far from your tent,	23 Se tu ti converti all’Onnipotente, tu sarai ristabilito, Se tu allontani dal tuo tabernacolo l’iniquità;
24 And treat raw gold like dust, and the fine gold of Ophir as pebbles from the brook,	24 E metterai l’oro in su la polvere, E l’oro di Ofir in su le selci de’ fiumi.
25 Then the Almighty himself shall be your gold and your sparkling silver.	25 E l’Onnipotente sarà il tuo oro, E il tuo argento, e le tue forze.
26 For then you shall delight in the Almighty and you shall lift up your face toward God.	26 Perciocchè allora tu prenderai diletto nell’Onnipotente, Ed alzerai la tua faccia a Dio.
27 You shall entreat him and he will hear you, and your vows you shall fulfill.	27 Tu gli supplicherai, ed egli ti esaudirà, E tu gli pagherai i tuoi voti.
28 When you make a decision, it shall succeed for you, and upon your ways the light shall shine.	28 Quando avrai determinato di fare alcuna cosa, Ella ti riuscirà sicuramente, E la luce risplenderà sopra le tue vie.
29 For he brings down the pride of the haughty, but the man of humble mien he saves.	29 Quando quelle saranno abbassate, allora dirai: Esaltazione; E Iddio salverà l’uomo con gli occhi chini.
30 God delivers him who is innocent; you shall be delivered through cleanness of hands.	30 Egli lo libererà, quantunque non sia innocente; Anzi sarà liberato per la purità delle tue mani
