NEW AMERICAN BIBLEDOUAI-RHEIMS
Once again the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came with them.1 And it came to pass, when on a certain day the sons of God came, and stood before the Lord, and Satan came among them, and stood in his sight,
And the LORD said to Satan, "Whence do you come?" And Satan answered the LORD and said, "From roaming the earth and patrolling it."2 That the Lord said to Satan: Whence comest thou ? And he answered and said: I have gone round about the earth, and walked through it.
And the LORD said to Satan, "Have you noticed my servant Job, and that there is no one on earth like him, faultless and upright, fearing God and avoiding evil? He still holds fast to his innocence although you incited me against him to ruin him without cause."3 And the Lord said to Satan: Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a man simple, and upright, and fearing Cod, and avoiding evil, and still keeping his innocence ? But thou hast moved me against him, that I sho uld afflict him without cause.
And Satan answered the LORD and said, "Skin for skin! All that a man has will he give for his life.4 And Satan answered, and said: Skin for skin, and all that a man hath he will give for his life:
But now put forth your hand and touch his bone and his flesh, and surely he will blaspheme you to your face."5 gut put forth thy hand, and touch his bone and his flesh, and then thou shalt gee that he will bless thee to thy face.
And the LORD said to Satan, "He is in your power; only spare his life."6 And the Lord said to Satan: Behold be is in thy hand, but yet save his life.
So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD and smote Job with severe boils from the soles of his feet to the crown of his head.7 So Satan went forth from the presence Of the Lord, and struck Job with a very grievous ulcer, from the sole of the foot even to the top of his head:
And he took a potsherd to scrape himself, as he sat among the ashes.8 And he took a potsherd and scraped the corrupt matter, sitting on a dunghill.
Then his wife said to him, "Are you still holding to your innocence? Curse God and die."9 And his wife said to him: Dost thou still continue in thy simplicity? bless God and die.
But he said to her, "Are even you going to speak as senseless women do? We accept good things from God; and should we not accept evil?" Through all this, Job said nothing sinful.10 And he said to her: Thou hast; spoken like one of the foolish women: if we have received good things at the hand of God, why should we not receive evil? In all these things Job did not sin with his lips.
Now when three of Job's friends heard of all the misfortune that had come upon him, they set out each one from his own place: Eliphaz from Teman, Bildad from Shuh, and Zophar from Naamath. They met and journeyed together to give him sympathy and comfort.11 Now when Job's three friends heard all the evil that had befallen him, they came every one from his own place, Alphas the Themanite, and Baldad the Suhite, and Sophar the Naamathite. For they had made an appointment to come together and visit him, a nd comfort him.
But when, at a distance, they lifted up their eyes and did not recognize him, they began to weep aloud; they tore their cloaks and threw dust upon their heads.12 And when they had lifted up their eyes afar off, they knew him not, and crying out they wept, and rending their garments they sprinkled dust upon their heads towards heaven.
Then they sat down upon the ground with him seven days and seven nights, but none of them spoke a word to him; for they saw how great was his suffering.13 And they sat with him on the ground seven days and seven nights, and no man spoke to him a word: for they saw that his grief was very great.
