1 Then Job replied and said:	1 Job tomó la palabra y dijo:
2 No doubt you are the intelligent folk, and with you wisdom shall die!	2 En verdad, vosotros sois el pueblo, con vosotros la Sabiduría morirá.
3 But I have intelligence as well as you; for who does not know such things as these?	3 Yo también sé pensar como vosotros, no os cedo en nada: ¿a quién se le ocultan esas cosas?
4 I have become the sport of my neighbors: "The one whom God answers when he calls upon him, The just, the perfect man," is a laughing-stock;	4 La irrisión de su amigo, eso soy yo, cuando grito hacia Dios para obtener repuesta. ¡Irrisión es el justo perfecto!
5 The undisturbed esteem my downfall a disgrace such as awaits unsteady feet;	5 «¡Al infortunio, el desprecio! - opinan los dichosos -; ¡un golpe más a quien vacila!»
6 Yet the tents of robbers are prosperous, and those who provoke God are secure.	6 Mientras viven en paz las tiendas de los salteadores, en plena seguridad los que irritan a Dios, los que meten a Dios en su puño!
7 But now ask the beasts to teach you, and the birds of the air to tell you;	7 Pero interroga a las bestias, que te instruyan, a las aves del cielo, que te informen.
8 Or the reptiles on earth to instruct you, and the fish of the sea to inform you.	8 Te instruirán los reptiles de la tierra, te enseñarán los peces del mar.
9 Which of all these does not know that the hand of God has done this?	9 Pues entre todos ellos, ¿quién ignora que la mano de Dios ha hecho esto?
10 In his hand is the soul of every living thing, and the life breath of all mankind.	10 El, que tiene en su mano el alma de todo ser viviente y el soplo de toda carne de hombre.
11 Does not the ear judge words as the mouth tastes food?	11 ¿No es el oído el que aprecia los discursos, como el paladar saborea los manjares?
12 So with old age is wisdom, and with length of days understanding.	12 ¿No está entre los ancianos el saber, en los muchos años la inteligencia?
13 With him are wisdom and might; his are counsel and understanding.	13 Pero con él sabiduría y poder, de él la inteligencia y el consejo.
14 If he breaks a thing down, there is no rebuilding; if he imprisons a man, there is no release.	14 Si él destruye, no se puede edificar; si a alguno encierra, no se puede abrir.
15 He holds back the waters and there is drought; he sends them forth and they overwhelm the land.	15 Si retiene las aguas, sobreviene sequía, si las suelta, avasallan la tierra.
16 With him are strength and prudence; the misled and the misleaders are his.	16 Con él la fuerza y la agudeza; suyos son seducido y seductor.
17 He sends counselors away barefoot, and of judges he makes fools.	17 A los consejeros hace él andar descalzos, y entontece a los jueces.
18 He loosens the bonds imposed by kings and leaves but a waistcloth to bind the king's own loins.	18 Desata la banda de los reyes y les pasa una soga por los lomos.
19 and lets their never-failing waters flow away.	19 Hace andar descalzos a los sacerdotes y derriba a los que están más firmes.
20 He silences the trusted adviser, and takes discretion from the aged.	20 Quita el habla a los más hábiles y a los ancianos arrebata el juicio.
21 He breaks down the barriers of the streams	21 Sobre los nobles vierte el menosprecio y suelta la correa de los fuertes.
22 The recesses of the darkness he discloses, and brings the gloom forth to the light.	22 Revela la profundidad de las tinieblas, y saca a la luz la sombra.
23 He makes nations great and he destroys them; he spreads peoples abroad and he abandons them.	23 Levanta a las naciones y luego las destruye, ensancha a los pueblos y luego los suprime.
24 He takes understanding from the leaders of the land,	24 Quita el ánimo a los jefes del país, los hace vagar por desierto sin camino;
25 till they grope in the darkness without light; he makes them stagger like drunken men.	25 y andan a tientas en tinieblas, sin luz, se tambalean como un ebrio.
