1 It also happened that seven brothers with their mother were arrested and tortured with whips and scourges by the king, to force them to eat pork in violation of God's law.	1 Aconteceu também que, tendo sido presos sete irmãos com sua mãe, o rei os queria obrigar a comer carnes de porco contra a lei, atormentando-os para isso com açoutes que lhes davam com azorragues e nervos de boi.
2 One of the brothers, speaking for the others, said: "What do you expect to achieve by questioning us? We are ready to die rather than transgress the laws of our ancestors."	2 Um deles, em nome de todos, falou assim: Que pretendes, que queres saber de nós? Estamos prontos antes a morrer que a violar as leis de nossos pais.
3 At that the king, in a fury, gave orders to have pans and caldrons heated.	3 O rei, irritado, mandou pôr ao lume frigideiras e caldeirões. Logo que ficaram em brasa,
4 While they were being quickly heated, he commanded his executioners to cut out the tongue of the one who had spoken for the others, to scalp him and cut off his hands and feet, while the rest of his brothers and his mother looked on.	4 ordenou que se cortasse a língua ao que tinha falado primeiro, e que, arrancado da cabeça o couro cabeludo, lhe cortassem também as extremidades, à vista dos outros seus irmãos e de sua mãe.
5 When he was completely maimed but still breathing, the king ordered them to carry him to the fire and fry him. As a cloud of smoke spread from the pan, the brothers and their mother encouraged one another to die bravely, saying such words as these:	5 Depois de estar assim mutilado, mandou que o chegassem ao fogo e o torrassem na frigideira, quando ainda respirava. Enquanto se difundia largamente o vapor da frigideira, os outros (irmãos) exortavam-se mutuamente com sua mãe, a morrerem corajosamente,
6 "The Lord God is looking on, and he truly has compassion on us, as Moses declared in his canticle, when he protested openly with the words, 'And he will have pity on his servants.'"	6 dizendo: O Senhor Deus vê e consola-se em nós, conforme o declarou Moisés no seu cântico de protesto (contra Israel), por estas palavras: Ele será consolado nos seus servos.
7 When the first brother had died in this manner, they brought the second to be made sport of. After tearing off the skin and hair of his head, they asked him, "Will you eat the pork rather than have your body tortured limb by limb?"	7 Morto deste modo o primeiro, levaram o segundo ao suplício. Arrancado da cabeça o couro cabeludo, perguntavam-lhe se queria comer (das carnes que lhe apresentavam) antes que ser atormentado em cada um dos membros de todo o seu corpo.
8 Answering in the language of his forefathers, he said, "Never!" So he too in turn suffered the same tortures as the first.	8 Respondendo na língua de seus pais, disse: Não! Pelo que também este padeceu os mesmos tormentos que o primeiro.
9 At the point of death he said: "You accursed fiend, you are depriving us of this present life, but the King of the world will raise us up to live again forever. It is for his laws that we are dying."	9 Estando já para dar o último suspiro, disse desta maneira: Tu, ó malvado, fazes-nos perder a vida presente, mas (Deus) o Rei do universo nos ressuscitará para a vida eterna, a nós que morremos, por fidelidade às suas leis.
10 After him the third suffered their cruel sport. He put out his tongue at once when told to do so, and bravely held out his hands,	10 Depois deste, torturaram também o terceiro. Tendo-lhe sido pedida a língua, ele a apresentou logo, assim como estendeu as mãos corajosamente,
11 as he spoke these noble words: "It was from Heaven that I received these; for the sake of his laws I disdain them; from him I hope to receive them again."	11 e disse afouto: Do céu recebi estes membros, mas agora os desprezo pela defesa das suas leis, esperando que ele mos tornará a dar um dia.
12 Even the king and his attendants marveled at the young man's courage, because he regarded his sufferings as nothing.	12 O próprio rei e os que o acompanhavam admiraram o valor deste jovem, que reputava por nada os tormentos.
13 After he had died, they tortured and maltreated the fourth brother in the same way.	13 Morto este, atormentaram da mesma sorte o quarto.
14 When he was near death, he said, "It is my choice to die at the hands of men with the God-given hope of being restored to life by him; but for you, there will be no resurrection to life."	14 Quando ele estava já para expirar, disse: Felizes os que são entregues à morte pelos homens, esperando em Deus que hão-de ser por ele ressuscitados; porém, quanto a ti (ó rei), a tua ressurreição não será para a vida.
15 They next brought forward the fifth brother and maltreated him. Looking at the king,	15 Em seguida, pegaram no quinto e atormentaram-no. Mas ele, olhando para o rei disse-lhe:
16 he said: "Since you have power among men, mortal though you are, do what you please. But do not think that our nation is forsaken by God.	16 Tu fazes o que queres, porque recebeste o poder entre os homens, ainda que mortal como eles; todavia não cuides que Deus desamparou a nossa nação;
17 Only wait, and you will see how his great power will torment you and your descendants."	17 espera e verás quão grande é o seu poder e como ele te atormentará a ti e à tua raça.
18 After him they brought the sixth brother. When he was about to die, he said: "Have no vain illusions. We suffer these things on our own account, because we have sinned against our God; that is why such astonishing things have happened to us.	18 Após este, levaram (ao suplicio) o sexto, que, quando estava perto de morrer, disse: Não te iludas; se padecemos isto, é porque o merecemos pelos pecados contra o nosso Deus, pelos quais vêm sobre nós tão espantosos flagelos.
19 Do not think, then, that you will go unpunished for having dared to fight against God."	19 Mas não imagines que hás-de ficar sem castigo, depois de teres empreendido combater contra Deus.
20 Most admirable and worthy of everlasting remembrance was the mother, who saw her seven sons perish in a single day, yet bore it courageously because of her hope in the Lord.	20 Entretanto a mãe deles, sobremaneira admirável e digna de memória, vendo morrer os seus sete filhos em um só dia, suportou heroicamente a sua morte, pela esperança que tinha no Senhor.
21 Filled with a noble spirit that stirred her womanly heart with manly courage, she exhorted each of them in the language of their forefathers with these words:	21 Cheia de nobres sentimentos, exortava, na língua de seus pais, a cada um deles em particular, dando firmeza, com ânimo varonil, à sua ternura de mulher.
22 "I do not know how you came into existence in my womb; it was not I who gave you the breath of life, nor was it I who set in order the elements of which each of you is composed.	22 Dizia-lhes; Não sei como fostes formados no meu ventre; não fui eu que vos dei o espírito e a vida, ou que formei os membros do vosso corpo.
23 Therefore, since it is the Creator of the universe who shapes each man's beginning, as he brings about the origin of everything, he, in his mercy, will give you back both breath and life, because you now disregard yourselves for the sake of his law." Martyrdom of Mother and Sons	23 O Criador do mundo, que formou o homem no seu nascimento e deu a origem a todas as coisas, vos tornará a dar o espírito e a vida, por sua misericórdia, em recompensa do quanto agora vos desprezais a vós mesmos, por amor das suas leis.
24 Antiochus, suspecting insult in her words, thought he was being ridiculed. As the youngest brother was still alive, the king appealed to him, not with mere words, but with promises on oath, to make him rich and happy if he would abandon his ancestral customs: he would make him his Friend and entrust him with high office.	24 Ora Antíoco, considerando-se desprezado e julgando que aquelas palavras (dos mártires) eram um insulto para ele, como faltasse ainda o mais novo, não somente o exortava, mas ainda lhe assegurava com juramento que o faria rico e ditoso, que o teria na classe dos seus amigos e lhe confiaria altos cargos se abandonasse as leis dos seus pais.
25 When the youth paid no attention to him at all, the king appealed to the mother, urging her to advise her boy to save his life.	25 Como o jovem de nenhum modo consentisse em tais coisas, o rei chamou a sua mãe, e aconselhou-a a que fizesse àquele jovem recomendações para salvar a vida.
26 After he had urged her for a long time, she went through the motions of persuading her son.	26 Depois de a ter exortado com muitas razões, ela lhe prometeu que procuraria persuadir seu filho.
27 In derision of the cruel tyrant, she leaned over close to her son and said in their native language: "Son, have pity on me, who carried you in my womb for nine months, nursed you for three years, brought you up, educated and supported you to your present age.	27 Tendo-se, pois, inclinado para lhe falar, zombando deste cruel tirano, disse-lhe na língua pátria: Meu filho, tem compaixão de mim, que te trouxe nove meses no meu ventre, que te amamente! durante três anos, que te nutri e eduquei até esta idade.
28 I beg you, child, to look at the heavens and the earth and see all that is in them; then you will know that God did not make them out of existing things; and in the same way the human race came into existence.	28 Suplico-te, meu filho, que olhes para o céu e para a terra e para todas as coisas que há neles, e que penses bem que Deus as criou do nada, assim como a todos os homens.
29 Do not be afraid of this executioner, but be worthy of your brothers and accept death, so that in the time of mercy I may receive you again with them."	29 Não temas este algoz, mas sê digno de teus irmãos, aceita a morte, para que eu te encontre com eles no dia da misericórdia.
30 She had scarcely finished speaking when the youth said: "What are you waiting for? I will not obey the king's command. I obey the command of the law given to our forefathers through Moses.	30 Quando ela ainda estava falando, o jovem disse; Que esperais vós de mim? Eu não obedeço ao mandado real, mas às prescrições da lei que foi dada por Moisés a nossos pais.
31 But you, who have contrived every kind of affliction for the Hebrews, will not escape the hands of God.	31 Quanto a ti, autor de todos os males que oprimem os Hebreus, às mãos de Deus não escaparás.
32 We, indeed, are suffering because of our sins.	32 Quanto a nós, por causa de nossos pecados é que padecemos;
33 Though our living Lord treats us harshly for a little while to correct us with chastisements, he will again be reconciled with his servants.	33 e se o Senhor nosso Deus se irou um pouco contra nós para nos castigar e corrigir, tornar-se-á a reconciliar outra vez com os seus servos.
34 But you, wretch, vilest of all men! do not, in your insolence, concern yourself with unfounded hopes, as you raise your hand against the children of Heaven.	34 Tu, porém, ó malvado e o mais perverso de todos os homens, não te ensoberbeças loucamente erguido em vãs esperanças, quando levantas a mão contra os servos de Deus,
35 You have not yet escaped the judgment of the almighty and all-seeing God.	35 porque ainda não escapaste ao juízo de Deus omnipotente, que tudo vê.
36 My brothers, after enduring brief pain, have drunk of never-failing life, under God's covenant, but you, by the judgment of God, shall receive just punishments for your arrogance.	36 Meus irmãos, depois de terem suportado agora uma dor transitória, entraram já na aliança da vida eterna; tu, porém, tens de sofrer, pelo juízo de Deus, a pena justamente devida à tua soberba.
37 Like my brothers, I offer up my body and my life for our ancestral laws, imploring God to show mercy soon to our nation, and by afflictions and blows to make you confess that he alone is God.	37 Eu como meus irmãos, entrego o meu corpo e a minha vida em defesa das leis de meus pais, rogando a Deus que, quanto antes, se mostre propício à nossa nação e te constranja, por meio de tormentos e de flagelos, a confessar que ele é o único Deus.
38 Through me and my brothers, may there be an end to the wrath of the Almighty that has justly fallen on our whole nation."	38 Oxalá que na minha morte e na de meus irmãos se detenha a ira do Todo-Poderoso, que justamente caiu sobre todo o nosso povo.
39 At that, the king became enraged and treated him even worse than the others, since he bitterly resented the boy's contempt.	39 Então o rei, abrasado em ira, embraveceu-se contra este mais cruelmente que contra os outros, não podendo sofrer ver-se assim escarnecido.
40 Thus he too died undefiled, putting all his trust in the Lord.	40 Morreu este jovem sem se contaminar, confiando inteiramente no Senhor.
41 The mother was last to die, after her sons.	41 A mãe foi a última a sofrer a morte, depois de seus filhos.
42 Enough has been said about the sacrificial meals and the excessive cruelties.	42 Mas, acerca de banquetes rituais (pagãos) e de crueldades excessivas, já é bastante o que temos dito.
