1 As King Antiochus was traversing the inland provinces, he heard that in Persia there was a city called Elymais, famous for its wealth in silver and gold,	1 Enquanto percorria as províncias superiores, soube o rei Antíoco que na Pérsia, em Elimaida, havia uma cidade famosa por suas riquezas, sua prata e ouro.
2 and that its temple was very rich, containing gold helmets, breastplates, and weapons left there by Alexander, son of Philip, king of Macedon, the first king of the Greeks.	2 Seu templo, extremamente rico, possuía véus de ouro, escudos, couraças e armas, abandonados ali por Alexandre, filho de Filipe, rei da Macedônia, que foi o primeiro a reinar sobre a Grécia.
3 He went therefore and tried to capture and pillage the city. But he could not do so, because his plan became known to the people of the city	3 Dirigiu-se ele para essa cidade, com a finalidade de tomá-la e pilhá-la, mas foi em vão, porque os habitantes haviam sido prevenidos.
4 who rose up in battle against him. So he retreated and in great dismay withdrew from there to return to Babylon.	4 Eles se aprontaram para lhe resistir e ele teve que voltar de lá, para alcançar Babilônia com grande humilhação.
5 While he was in Persia, a messenger brought him news that the armies sent into the land of Judah had been put to flight;	5 E eis que, na Pérsia, um mensageiro veio dizer-lhe que as tropas enviadas à Judéia tinham sido derrotadas, 6. e que Lísias, tendo partido a princípio com um poderoso exército, havia fugido na presença dos judeus, os quais haviam aumentado ainda suas forças com armas e tropas e se tinham enriquecido com todo o material raptado de seus campos devastados.
6 that Lysias had gone at first with a strong army and been driven back by the Israelites; that they had grown strong by reason of the arms, men, and abundant possessions taken from the armies they had destroyed;
7 that they had pulled down the Abomination which he had built upon the altar in Jerusalem; and that they had surrounded with high walls both the sanctuary, as it had been before, and his city of Beth-zur.	7 Eles tinham também destruído a abominação edificada por ele sobre o altar, em Jerusalém, e haviam cercado o templo com altas muralhas, como outrora, assim como a cidade de Betsur.
8 When the king heard this news, he was struck with fear and very much shaken. Sick with grief because his designs had failed, he took to his bed.	8 Ouvindo essas novas, o rei ficou irado e profundamente perturbado. Atirou-se à cama e caiu doente de tristeza, porque os acontecimentos não tinham correspondido à sua expectativa.
9 There he remained many days, overwhelmed with sorrow, for he knew he was going to die.	9 Passou assim muitos dias, porque sua mágoa se renovava sem cessar, e pensava na morte.
10 So he called in all his Friends and said to them: "Sleep has departed from my eyes, for my heart is sinking with anxiety.	10 Mandou chamar todos os seus amigos e lhes disse: O sono fugiu dos meus olhos e meu coração desfalece de tristeza.
11 I said to myself: 'Into what tribulation have I come, and in what floods of sorrow am I now!	11 Eu repito para mim mesmo: Em que aflição fui eu cair e a que desolação fui eu reduzido até o presente, eu que era bom e querido no tempo de meu poder?
12 Yet I was kindly and beloved in my rule.' But I now recall the evils I did in Jerusalem, when I carried away all the vessels of gold and silver that were in it, and for no cause gave orders that the inhabitants of Judah be destroyed.	12 Mas agora eu me lembro dos males que causei em Jerusalém, de todos os objetos de ouro e de prata que saqueei, e de todos os habitantes da Judéia que exterminei sem motivo.
13 I know that this is why these evils have overtaken me; and now I am dying, in bitter grief, in a foreign land."	13 Reconheço que foi por causa disso que todos esses males me fulminaram, e agora morro de tristeza numa terra estrangeira.
14 Then he summoned Philip, one of his Friends, and put him in charge of his whole kingdom.	14 Ele chamou Filipe, um de seus amigos, e constituiu-o regente de todo o seu reino.
15 He gave him his crown, his robe, and his signet ring, so that he might guide the king's son Antiochus and bring him up to be king.	15 Entregou-lhe seu diadema, seu manto, e seu anel, com a responsabilidade de guiar seu filho Antíoco e de educá-lo para sua realeza.
16 King Antiochus died in Persia in the year one hundred and forty-nine.	16 O rei Antíoco morreu ali no ano cento e quarenta e nove.
17 When Lysias learned that the king was dead, he set up the king's son Antiochus, whom he had reared as a child, to be king in his place; and he gave him the title Eupator.	17 Por sua vez soube Lísias que o rei havia morrido e elevou ao trono seu filho Antíoco que ele havia educado desde a infância, e a quem ele dera o nome de Eupator.
18 The men in the citadel were hemming in Israel around the sanctuary, continually trying to harm them and to strengthen the Gentiles.	18 Nesse ínterim, os ocupantes da cidadela importunavam os judeus que se dirigiam ao templo, procuravam constantemente causar-lhes dano, para apoiar os gentios.
19 But Judas planned to destroy them, and called all the people together to besiege them.	19 Judas resolveu arrancar-lhes das mãos a cidadela e convocou todo o povo para sitiá-los.
20 So in the year one hundred and fifty they assembled and stormed the citadel, for which purpose he constructed catapults and other devices.	20 Reuniram-se, portanto, para começar o cerco no ano cento e cinqüenta, e construíram balistas e máquinas.
21 Some of the besieged escaped, joined by impious Israelites;	21 Mas alguns dos sitiados, aos quais se juntaram alguns israelitas perversos, fugiram
22 they went to the king and said: "How long will you fail to do justice and avenge our kinsmen?	22 e correram ao rei para lhe dizer: Até quando deixarás de fazer justiça e vingar nossos irmãos?
23 We agreed to serve your father and to follow his orders and obey his edicts.	23 Julgamos bom servir a teu pai, obedecer suas ordens e seguir suas leis;
24 And for this the sons of our people have become our enemies; they have put to death as many of us as they could find and have plundered our estates.	24 e os filhos de nosso povo se afastaram de nós como dos estrangeiros. Eles cercam a cidadela; mal capturam um dos nossos, matam-no e pilham os nossos bens.
25 They have acted aggressively not only against us, but throughout their whole territory.	25 E não é somente sobre nós que eles estendem a mão, mas ainda contra os povos vizinhos.
26 Look! They have now besieged the citadel in Jerusalem in order to capture it, and they have fortified the sanctuary and Beth-zur.	26 Eis que hoje eles se empossaram da cidadela, para serem senhores do templo e da cidade, e fortificaram Betsur.
27 Unless you quickly forestall them, they will do even worse things than these, and you will not be able to stop them."	27 Se tu não os prevenires, farão ainda piores males e tu não poderás mais detê-los.
28 When the king heard this he was angry, and he called together all his Friends, the officers of his army, and the commanders of the cavalry.	28 A estas palavras o rei se encolerizou e convocou todos os seus amigos, os generais de seus exércitos e os chefes de sua cavalaria.
29 Mercenary forces also came to him from other kingdoms and from the islands of the seas.	29 E ajuntaram-se a ele outros reinos e ilhas marítimas, tropas de mercenários;
30 His army numbered a hundred thousand foot-soldiers, twenty thousand cavalry, and thirty-two elephants trained for war.	30 e seu exército atingiu a cem mil infantes, vinte mil cavaleiros e trinta e dois elefantes, prontos para a guerra.
31 They passed through Idumea and camped before Beth-zur. For many days they attacked it; they constructed siege-devices, but the besieged made a sortie and burned these, and they fought bravely.	31 Atravessaram eles a Iduméia e acamparam defronte a Betsur, onde combateram por muito tempo; construíram máquinas, mas os sitiados saíram e lançaram fogo, lutando com coragem.
32 Then Judas marched away from the citadel and moved his camp to Beth-zechariah, on the way to the king's camp.	32 Abandonando a cidadela, veio Judas estabelecer-se em Betzacara, defronte do campo de luta do rei.
33 The king, rising before dawn, moved his force hastily along the road to Beth-zechariah; and the armies prepared for battle, while the trumpets sounded.	33 Ao amanhecer, levantou-se o rei e dirigiu impetuosamente suas tropas em direção a Betzacara: as forças se prepararam para o combate, e soaram as trombetas.
34 They showed the elephants the juice of grapes and mulberries to provoke them to fight.	34 Mostraram aos elefantes suco de uvas e de amoras para incitá-los ao combate.
35 The beasts were distributed along the phalanxes, each elephant having assigned to it a thousand men in coats of mail, with bronze helmets, and five hundred picked cavalry.	35 Foram repartidos nas falanges, pondo-se em volta de cada elefante mil homens armados de cotas de malhas e de capacetes de bronze para a cabeça, e quinhentos cavaleiros escolhidos estavam igualmente ao redor de cada animal.
36 These anticipated the beast wherever it was; and wherever it moved, they moved too and never left it.	36 Esses cavaleiros tinham o costume de estar com o animal onde quer que ele estivesse e de ir aonde ele ia sem jamais se afastarem dele.
37 A strong wooden tower covering each elephant, and fastened to it by a harness, held, besides the Indian mahout, three soldiers who fought from it.	37 Sobre cada um havia também fortes torres de madeira, muito firmes e defendidas pelas máquinas. Sobre cada um achavam-se também valentes guerreiros, que combatiam lá em cima, e, finalmente, seu condutor indiano.
38 The remaining cavalry were stationed on one or the other of the two flanks of the army, to harass the enemy and to be protected from the phalanxes.	38 O restante da cavalaria, colocada de um lado e de outro, nas duas alas, manobrava cobrindo as falanges.
39 When the sun shone on the gold and bronze shields, the mountains gleamed with their brightness and blazed like flaming torches.	39 Quando o sol brilhou sobre os escudos de ouro e bronze, a montanha resplandeceu, como que iluminada por outras tantas lâmpadas.
40 Part of the king's army extended over the heights, while some were on low ground, but they marched forward steadily and in good order.	40 Uma parte das tropas do rei se espalhou sobre as colinas e outra na planície, caminhando com precaução e em boa ordem.
41 All who heard the noise of their numbers, the tramp of their marching, and the clashing of the arms, trembled; for the army was very great and strong.	41 O ruído de seu número, de sua marcha, da colisão de suas armas era pavoroso, porque era um exército extremamente numeroso e possante.
42 Judas with his army advanced to fight, and six hundred men of the king's army fell.	42 Judas, no entanto, avançou com os seus para travar a batalha, e seiscentos homens do exército do rei foram aniquilados.
43 Eleazar, called Avaran, saw one of the beasts bigger than any of the others and covered with royal armor, and he thought the king must be on it.	43 Eleazar, cognominado Avarã, viu que um dos elefantes estava armado com um couraçado real e ultrapassava todos os outros; ele julgou que o rei o montasse.
44 So he gave up his life to save his people and win an everlasting name for himself.	44 Projetou então salvar todo o povo e conquistar um nome eterno.
45 He dashed up to it in the middle of the phalanx, killing men right and left, so that they fell back from him on both sides.	45 Precipitou-se audaciosamente nessa direção, para o meio da falange, matando à direita e à esquerda e separando o inimigo de lado a lado.
46 He ran right under the elephant and stabbed it in the belly, killing it. The beast fell to the ground on top of him, and he died there.	46 Meteu-se debaixo do elefante e, tomando posição abaixo dele, matou-o. O animal rolou sobre ele, e ele morreu ali.
47 When the Jews saw the strength of the royal army and the ardor of its forces, they retreated from them.	47 No entanto, averiguando o poder do exército real e a impetuosidade de suas tropas, retiraram-se os judeus.
48 A part of the king's army went up to Jerusalem to attack them, and the king established camps in Judea and at Mount Zion.	48 Mas os soldados do rei subiram-lhe ao encontro até Jerusalém, dirigindo-se então o rei à Judéia e ao monte Sião.
49 He made peace with the men of Beth-zur, and they evacuated the city, because they had no food there to enable them to stand a siege, for that was a sabbath year in the land.	49 Fez igualmente a paz com os habitantes de Betsur, porquanto estes saíram da cidade, porque já não tinham víveres para continuarem ali, pois era o ano sabático.
50 The king took Beth-zur and stationed a garrison there to hold it.	50 Assim o rei apoderou-se da cidade e pôs nela uma guarnição.
51 For many days he besieged the sanctuary, setting up artillery and machines, fire-throwers, catapults and mechanical bows for shooting arrows and slingstones.	51 Por muitos dias cercou a cidade santa, construiu máquinas, guindastes para lançar fogo ou pedras, escorpiões para lançar flechas e fundas.
52 The Jews countered by setting up machines of their own, and kept up the fight a long time.	52 De seu lado, os sitiados construíram também máquinas, para se oporem aos seus inimigos, e combateram por muito tempo.
53 But there were no provisions in the storerooms, because it was the seventh year, and the tide-over provisions had been eaten up by those who had been rescued from the Gentiles and brought to Judea.	53 Todavia faltavam víveres nos celeiros, por ser o sétimo ano e todos os que se achavam refugiados na Judéia, para fugir dos gentios, haviam esgotado o resto da reserva.
54 Few men remained in the sanctuary; the rest scattered, each to his own home, for the famine was too much for them.	54 Restavam afinal poucos homens para a defesa do templo, atingidos como estavam pela fome e por dispersarem-se cada um para sua casa.
55 Lysias heard that Philip, whom King Antiochus, before his death, had appointed to train his son Antiochus to be king,	55 Filipe, que antes de morrer o rei Antíoco fora designado para educar seu filho Antíoco para a realeza, 56. tinha chegado da Pérsia e da Média com o exército do rei e procurava apoderar-se do governo.
56 had returned from Persia and Media with the army that accompanied the king, and that he was seeking to take over the government.
57 So he hastily resolved to withdraw. He said to the king, the leaders of the army, and the soldiers: "We are grow-ing weaker every day, our provisions are scanty, the place we are besieging is strong, and it is our duty to take care of the affairs of the kingdom.	57 Soube-o Lísias e apressou a partida dizendo ao rei, aos oficiais e aos homens: Nós nos vamos enfraquecendo aqui dia por dia, temos poucos víveres, e o lugar que sitiamos é forte, enquanto nos devemos ocupar com os negócios do reino.
58 Therefore let us now come to terms with these men, and make peace with them and all their nation.	58 Estendamos a mão a esses homens e façamos paz com eles e com toda a sua raça.
59 Let us grant them freedom to live according to their own laws as formerly; it was on account of their laws, which we abolished, that they became angry and did all these things."	59 Deixemo-los viver como outrora segundo as suas próprias leis, porque foi por causa dessas leis que nós abolimos, que eles se revoltaram e fizeram tudo isso.
60 The proposal found favor with the king and the leaders;	60 Essa proposta agradou ao rei e aos generais. Enviou, pois, alguém para tratar da paz com os sitiados, que a aceitaram.
61 he sent peace terms to the Jews, and they accepted. So the king and the leaders swore an oath to them, and on these terms they evacuated the fortification.	61 Sob a palavra do juramento feito pelo rei e os generais, abandonaram a fortaleza.
62 But when the king entered Mount Zion and saw how the place was fortified, he broke the oath he had sworn and gave orders for the encircling wall to be destroyed.	62 O rei subiu o monte Sião e visitou as fortificações, mas quebrou a palavra dada e ordenou a destruição da muralha.
63 Then he departed in haste and returned to Antioch, where he found Philip in possession of the city. He fought against him and took the city by force.	63 Em seguida, partiu a toda a pressa, recuperou Antioquia, onde achou Filipe como senhor da cidade. Atacou-a e tomou a cidade à força.
