1 As King Antiochus was traversing the inland provinces, he heard that in Persia there was a city called Elymais, famous for its wealth in silver and gold,	1 Il re Antioco, mentre percorreva le regioni settentrionali, sentì dire che in Persia vi era Elimaide, città famosa per ricchezza, argento e oro,
2 and that its temple was very rich, containing gold helmets, breastplates, and weapons left there by Alexander, son of Philip, king of Macedon, the first king of the Greeks.	2 e che il suo tempio era molto ricco e che vi si trovavano drappi d'oro, corazze e armi, lasciatevi da Alessandro, figlio di Filippo, il re macedone che per primo regnò sui Greci.
3 He went therefore and tried to capture and pillage the city. But he could not do so, because his plan became known to the people of the city	3 Vi andò, allora, e cercò di occupare la città e di depredarla; ma non vi riuscì perché gli abitanti della città, conosciuto il suo disegno,

8 When the king heard this news, he was struck with fear and very much shaken. 10 So he called in all his Friends and said to them: "Sleep has departed from my eyes, for my heart is sinking with anxiety.	10 Perciò chiamò tutti i suoi amici e disse loro: "Il sonno s'è ritirato dai miei occhi e il mio cuore è abbattuto per l'inquietudine.
11 I said to myself: 'Into what tribulation have I come, and in what floods of sorrow am I now!	11 Mi sono detto: A quale afflizione sono giunto e in quale grande tempesta mi dibatto! Ero, infatti, felice e amato nella mia potenza.
12 Yet I was kindly and beloved in my rule.' But I now recall the evils I did in Jerusalem, when I carried away all the vessels of gold and silver that were in it, and for no cause gave orders that the inhabitants of Judah be destroyed.	12 Ora, invece, mi assale il ricordo dei mali che ho fatto a Gerusalemme, quando presi tutti i suoi oggetti d'argento e d'oro e quando inviai a sterminare gli abitanti di Giuda senza motivo.
13 I know that this is why these evils have overtaken me; and now I am dying, in bitter grief, in a foreign land."	13 Riconosco che è a causa di tali cose che questi mali mi hanno raggiunto; ed ecco con profonda tristezza perisco in terra straniera!".
14 Then he summoned Philip, one of his Friends, and put him in charge of his whole kingdom.	14 Chiamò Filippo, uno dei suoi amici, e lo costituì capo di tutto il suo regno.
15 He gave him his crown, his robe, and his signet ring, so that he might guide the king's son Antiochus and bring him up to be king.	15 Gli consegnò il diadema, il suo manto e l'anello, l'incaricò di dirigere suo figlio Antioco e di prepararlo al trono.
16 King Antiochus died in Persia in the year one hundred and forty-nine.	16 Poi morì lì, il re Antioco, l'anno 149.
17 When Lysias learned that the king was dead, he set up the king's son Antiochus, whom he had reared as a child, to be king in his place; and he gave him the title Eupator.	17 Ma Lisia, appena seppe che il re era morto, proclamò re suo figlio Antioco, ch'egli aveva educato da piccolo, e gli impose il nome di Eupatore.

19 But Judas planned to destroy them, and called all the people together to besiege them.	19 Giuda perciò, avendo deciso di sterminarli, fece convocare tutto il popolo per assediarli.
20 So in the year one hundred and fifty they assembled and stormed the citadel, for which purpose he constructed catapults and other devices.	20 Si radunarono, infatti, e l'anno 15 0 posero l'assedio all'Acra, costruendo piattaforme e macchine.

24 And for this the sons of our people have become our enemies; they have put to death as many of us as they could find and have plundered our estates.	24 Per questa ragione i figli del nostro popolo si sono alienati da noi. 25 They have acted aggressively not only against us, but throughout their whole territory.	25 E non è contro di noi soltanto che hanno steso la mano, ma anche contro i loro confinanti.
26 Look! They have now besieged the citadel in Jerusalem in order to capture it, and they have fortified the sanctuary and Beth-zur.	26 Ecco, ora stanno accampati intorno all'Acra, in Gerusalemme, per espugnarla, e hanno fortificato il santuario e Bet-Zur.
27 Unless you quickly forestall them, they will do even worse things than these, and you will not be able to stop them."	27 Se non ti affretti a prevenirli, faranno cose più gravi di queste e tu non potrai più arrestarli".
28 When the king heard this he was angry, and he called together all his Friends, the officers of his army, and the commanders of the cavalry.	28 All'udire ciò, il re si adirò e fece radunare tutti i suoi amici, comandanti dell'esercito e preposti alla cavalleria.
29 Mercenary forces also came to him from other kingdoms and from the islands of the seas.	29 Accorsero da lui truppe mercenarie anche da altri regni e dalle isole del mare.
30 His army numbered a hundred thousand foot-soldiers, twenty thousand cavalry, and thirty-two elephants trained for war.	30 Il numero delle sue truppe era di centomila fanti, ventimila cavalieri e trentadue elefanti addestrati alla guerra.
31 They passed through Idumea and camped before Beth-zur. For many days they attacked it; they constructed siege-devices, but the besieged made a sortie and burned these, and they fought bravely.	31 Passarono per l'Idumea e posero l'accampamento contro Bet-Zur. Combatterono per molti giorni e si fecero delle macchine. Gli assediati, però, fecero una sortita e le incendiarono, combattendo valorosamente.
32 Then Judas marched away from the citadel and moved his camp to Beth-zechariah, on the way to the king's camp.	32 Giuda, allora, partì anch'egli dall'Acra e si accampò presso Bet-Zaccaria, di fronte al campo del re.
33 The king, rising before dawn, moved his force hastily along the road to Beth-zechariah; and the armies prepared for battle, while the trumpets sounded.	33 Il re, però, si levò di buon mattino e trasferì l'armata, piena d'ardore, sulla strada di Bet-Zaccaria, dove le truppe si disposero al combattimento e suonarono le trombe.
34 They showed the elephants the juice of grapes and mulberries to provoke them to fight.	34 Per aizzarli al combattimento, misero davanti agli elefanti succo di uva e di more.
35 The beasts were distributed along the phalanxes, each elephant having assigned to it a thousand men in coats of mail, with bronze helmets, and five hundred picked cavalry.	35 Ripartirono poi queste bestie tra le varie falangi e intorno a ciascun elefante disposero mille uomini con corazze a maglia e, sulla testa, elmi di bronzo, mentre cinquecento cavalieri scelti erano disposti intorno a ciascuna bestia.
36 These anticipated the beast wherever it was; and wherever it moved, they moved too and never left it.	36 Costoro in ogni caso stavano là, ovunque era la bestia; l'accompagnavano ovunque andava e mai si allontanavano da essa.
37 A strong wooden tower covering each elephant, and fastened to it by a harness, held, besides the Indian mahout, three soldiers who fought from it.	37 Delle torri di legno, fortemente protette, erano assicurate su ciascuna bestia mediante congegni e in ciascuna torre vi erano quattro uomini armati che combattevano da sopra ad essa, e in più l'indiano.
38 The remaining cavalry were stationed on one or the other of the two flanks of the army, to harass the enemy and to be protected from the phalanxes.	38 Quanto al resto della cavalleria, il re la ripartì di qua e di là, ai due lati dell'armata per sconvolgere il nemico e per proteggere le falangi.
39 When the sun shone on the gold and bronze shields, the mountains gleamed with their brightness and blazed like flaming torches.	39 Quando poi il sole rifulse sugli scudi d'oro e di bronzo, le montagne ne furono illuminate e brillarono come lampade di fuoco.
40 Part of the king's army extended over the heights, while some were on low ground, but they marched forward steadily and in good order.	40 Una parte dell'armata del re si schierò sulle alture della montagna, gli altri invece nella pianura e incominciarono ad avanzare cautamente e ordinatamente.
41 All who heard the noise of their numbers, the tramp of their marching, and the clashing of the arms, trembled; for the army was very great and strong.	41 Restavano tutti scossi quelli che udivano il clamore della loro moltitudine, il calpestio di tanta gente e l'urto delle armi. Era, infatti, un esercito straordinariamente grande e potente.
42 Judas with his army advanced to fight, and six hundred men of the king's army fell.	42 Giuda avanzò col suo esercito all'attacco e nell'esercito del re caddero seicento uomini.
43 Eleazar, called Avaran, saw one of the beasts bigger than any of the others and covered with royal armor, and he thought the king must be on it.	43 Eleàzaro, detto Auaran, vedendo uno degli elefanti bardato con armature regali, e più alto di tutti gli altri, credendo che sopra di esso vi fosse il re,
44 So he gave up his life to save his people and win an everlasting name for himself.	44 diede se stesso per salvare il suo popolo e per acquistarsi un nome eterno.
45 He dashed up to it in the middle of the phalanx, killing men right and left, so that they fell back from him on both sides.	45 Corse arditamente verso di esso in mezzo alla falange, uccidendo a destra e a sinistra, sicché i nemici si scindevano davanti a lui da una parte e dall'altra.
46 He ran right under the elephant and stabbed it in the belly, killing it. The beast fell to the ground on top of him, and he died there.	46 Cacciatosi sotto l'elefante, lo colpì di sotto e l'uccise. La bestia però cadde a terra sopra di lui ed ivi egli morì.
47 When the Jews saw the strength of the royal army and the ardor of its forces, they retreated from them.	47 I Giudei tuttavia, vedendo la forza del re e lo slancio delle sue truppe, ripiegarono davanti ad esse.
48 A part of the king's army went up to Jerusalem to attack them, and the king established camps in Judea and at Mount Zion.	48 Gli uomini dell'armata del re, allora, salirono contro di essi alla volta di Gerusalemme e il re fece porre il campo contro la Giudea e contro il monte Sion,
49 He made peace with the men of Beth-zur, and they evacuated the city, because they had no food there to enable them to stand a siege, for that was a sabbath year in the land.	49 mentre egli trattò la pace con quelli che erano a Bet-Zur, i quali uscirono dalla città perché non avevano più viveri per sostenervi un assedio, essendo la terra in riposo.
50 The king took Beth-zur and stationed a garrison there to hold it.	50 Così il re, presa Bet-Zur e postovi un presidio per custodirla,
51 For many days he besieged the sanctuary, setting up artillery and machines, fire-throwers, catapults and mechanical bows for shooting arrows and slingstones.	51 tenne assediato per molti giorni il santuario, erigendovi piattaforme, macchine, lanciafiamme, baliste e scorpioni per scagliare frecce e proiettili.
52 The Jews countered by setting up machines of their own, and kept up the fight a long time.	52 Anche i Giudei però costruirono macchine contro le loro macchine e combatterono per molti giorni.
53 But there were no provisions in the storerooms, because it was the seventh year, and the tide-over provisions had been eaten up by those who had been rescued from the Gentiles and brought to Judea.	53 Non essendovi, tuttavia, più viveri nei depositi, perché quello era l'anno sabbatico e perché coloro che da mezzo ai gentili avevano trovato scampo in Giudea avevano consumato il resto delle provviste,
54 Few men remained in the sanctuary; the rest scattered, each to his own home, for the famine was too much for them.	54 furono lasciati nel santuario soltanto pochi uomini, e gli altri, presi dalla fame, si dispersero ciascuno al suo paese.
55 Lysias heard that Philip, whom King Antiochus, before his death, had appointed to train his son Antiochus to be king,	55 Frattanto Lisia venne a sapere che Filippo, incaricato dal re Antioco, ancora vivente, di educare suo figlio Antioco per prepararlo al trono,
56 had returned from Persia and Media with the army that accompanied the king, and that he was seeking to take over the government.	56 era ritornato dalla Persia e dalla Media con le truppe che avevano accompagnato il re e cercava di impadronirsi del potere.
57 So he hastily resolved to withdraw. He said to the king, the leaders of the army, and the soldiers: "We are grow-ing weaker every day, our provisions are scanty, the place we are besieging is strong, and it is our duty to take care of the affairs of the kingdom.	57 Allora si affrettò a far cenno di voler partire, dicendo al re, ai comandanti dell'esercito e agli uomini: "Noi diminuiamo di giorno in giorno, il cibo è poco e il luogo che teniamo assediato è fortificato, mentre le cure del regno incombono sopra di noi.
58 Therefore let us now come to terms with these men, and make peace with them and all their nation.	58 Ora, perciò, offriamo la destra a questi uomini e facciamo la pace con loro e con tutta la loro gente.
59 Let us grant them freedom to live according to their own laws as formerly; it was on account of their laws, which we abolished, that they became angry and did all these things."	59 Concediamo loro di poter vivere secondo le loro leggi come per l'innanzi, perché è a causa delle loro leggi che noi abbiamo abolito che essi si sono irritati e hanno fatto tutte queste cose".
60 The proposal found favor with the king and the leaders;	60 Il suo discorso piacque al re e ai prìncipi. Si mandò perciò a trattare la pace con i Giudei e questi accettarono.
61 he sent peace terms to the Jews, and they accepted. So the king and the leaders swore an oath to them, and on these terms they evacuated the fortification.	61 Il re e i prìncipi giurarono davanti a loro ed essi, a tali patti, uscirono dalla fortezza.
62 But when the king entered Mount Zion and saw how the place was fortified, he broke the oath he had sworn and gave orders for the encircling wall to be destroyed.	62 Però il re, entrato nel monte Sion e visto il luogo fortificato, ruppe il giuramento che aveva fatto e comandò di abbattere il muro all'intorno.
63 Then he departed in haste and returned to Antioch, where he found Philip in possession of the city. He fought against him and took the city by force.	63 Quindi partì in fretta e fece ritorno ad Antiochia, dove trovò Filippo che si era impadronito della città. Combatté contro di lui e con la forza occupò la città.
