1 As King Antiochus was traversing the inland provinces, he heard that in Persia there was a city called Elymais, famous for its wealth in silver and gold,	1 Mientras tanto, el rey Antíoco recorría las provincias de la meseta. Allí se enteró de que en Persia había una ciudad llamada Elimaida, célebre por sus riquezas, su plata y su oro.
2 and that its temple was very rich, containing gold helmets, breastplates, and weapons left there by Alexander, son of Philip, king of Macedon, the first king of the Greeks.	2 Ella tenía un templo muy rico, donde se guardaban armaduras de oro, corazas y armas dejadas allí por Alejandro, hijo de Filipo y rey de Macedonia, el primero que reinó sobre los griegos.
3 He went therefore and tried to capture and pillage the city. But he could not do so, because his plan became known to the people of the city	3 Antíoco se dirigió a esa ciudad para apoderarse de ella y saquearla, pero no lo consiguió, porque los habitantes de la ciudad, al conocer sus planes,
4 who rose up in battle against him. So he retreated and in great dismay withdrew from there to return to Babylon.	4 le opusieron resistencia. El tuvo que huir y se retiró de allí muy amargado para volver a Babilonia.
5 While he was in Persia, a messenger brought him news that the armies sent into the land of Judah had been put to flight;	5 Cuando todavía estaba en Persia, le anunciaron que la expedición contra el país de Judá había fracasado.
6 that Lysias had gone at first with a strong army and been driven back by the Israelites; that they had grown strong by reason of the arms, men, and abundant possessions taken from the armies they had destroyed;	6 Le comunicaron que Lisias había ido al frente de un poderoso ejército, pero había tenido que retroceder ante los judíos, y que estos habían acrecentado su poder, gracias a las armas y al cuantioso botín tomado a los ejércitos vencidos.
7 that they had pulled down the Abomination which he had built upon the altar in Jerusalem; and that they had surrounded with high walls both the sanctuary, as it had been before, and his city of Beth-zur.	7 Además, habían destruido la Abominación que él había erigido sobre el altar de Jerusalén y habían rodeado el Santuario de altas murallas como antes, haciendo lo mismo con Betsur, que era una de las ciudades del rey.
8 When the king heard this news, he was struck with fear and very much shaken. Sick with grief because his designs had failed, he took to his bed.	8 Al oír tales noticias, el rey quedó consternado, presa de una violenta agitación, y cayó en cama enfermo de tristeza, porque las cosas no le habían salido como él deseaba.
9 There he remained many days, overwhelmed with sorrow, for he knew he was going to die.	9 Así pasó muchos días, sin poder librarse de su melancolía, hasta que sintió que se iba a morir.
10 So he called in all his Friends and said to them: "Sleep has departed from my eyes, for my heart is sinking with anxiety.	10 Entonces hizo venir a todos sus amigos y les dijo: «No puedo conciliar el sueño y me siento desfallecer.
11 I said to myself: 'Into what tribulation have I come, and in what floods of sorrow am I now!	11 Yo me pregunto cómo he llegado al estado de aflicción y de amargura en que ahora me encuentro, yo que era generoso y amado mientras ejercía el poder.
12 Yet I was kindly and beloved in my rule.' But I now recall the evils I did in Jerusalem, when I carried away all the vessels of gold and silver that were in it, and for no cause gave orders that the inhabitants of Judah be destroyed.	12 Pero ahora caigo en la cuenta de los males que causé en Jerusalén, cuando robé los objetos de plata y oro que había allí y mandé exterminar sin motivo a los habitantes de Judá.
13 I know that this is why these evils have overtaken me; and now I am dying, in bitter grief, in a foreign land."	13 Reconozco que por eso me suceden todos estos males y muero de pesadumbre en tierra extranjera».
14 Then he summoned Philip, one of his Friends, and put him in charge of his whole kingdom.	14 Luego, llamó a Filipo, uno de sus Amigos, y lo puso al frente de todo su reino.
15 He gave him his crown, his robe, and his signet ring, so that he might guide the king's son Antiochus and bring him up to be king.	15 Le entregó su diadema, su manto y su anillo, encargándole que dirigiera a su hijo Antíoco y lo educara para que fuera rey.
16 King Antiochus died in Persia in the year one hundred and forty-nine.	16 El rey Antíoco murió en aquel lugar, el año ciento cuarenta y nueve.
17 When Lysias learned that the king was dead, he set up the king's son Antiochus, whom he had reared as a child, to be king in his place; and he gave him the title Eupator.	17 Cuando Lisias se enteró de la muerte del rey, puso en el trono a su hijo Antíoco, que él había educado desde niño, dándole el sobrenombre de Eupátor.
18 The men in the citadel were hemming in Israel around the sanctuary, continually trying to harm them and to strengthen the Gentiles.	18 La gente de la Ciudadela tenía confinados a los israelitas alrededor del Santuario, y no perdía ocasión de hacerles mal y de apoyar a los paganos.
19 But Judas planned to destroy them, and called all the people together to besiege them.	19 Judas resolvió acabar con ellos y convocó a todo el ejército para sitiarlos.
20 So in the year one hundred and fifty they assembled and stormed the citadel, for which purpose he constructed catapults and other devices.	20 El año ciento cincuenta, se reunieron todos y sitiaron la Ciudadela, construyendo torres de asalto y empalizadas.
21 Some of the besieged escaped, joined by impious Israelites;	21 Pero varios de los sitiados rompieron el cerco y se les unieron algunos renegados de Israel,
22 they went to the king and said: "How long will you fail to do justice and avenge our kinsmen?	22 que acudieron al rey para decirle: «¿Hasta cuándo vas a estar sin hacernos justicia y sin vengar a nuestros hermanos?
23 We agreed to serve your father and to follow his orders and obey his edicts.	23 Nosotros aceptamos de buen grado servir a tu padre, cumplir sus órdenes y obedecer sus decretos.
24 And for this the sons of our people have become our enemies; they have put to death as many of us as they could find and have plundered our estates.	24 Por eso, nuestros compatriotas han sitiado la Ciudadela y nos tratan como extraños. Más aún, han matado a los nuestros que caían en sus manos y han confiscado nuestros bienes.
25 They have acted aggressively not only against us, but throughout their whole territory.	25 Y no sólo han levantado su mano contra nosotros, sino que también sobre todos los países limítrofes,
26 Look! They have now besieged the citadel in Jerusalem in order to capture it, and they have fortified the sanctuary and Beth-zur.	26 Ahora mismo tienen sitiada la Ciudadela de Jerusalén para apoderarse de ella y han fortificado el Santuario y la ciudad de Betsur.
27 Unless you quickly forestall them, they will do even worse things than these, and you will not be able to stop them."	27 Si no te adelantas rápidamente, harán cosas mayores todavía y ya no podrás detenerlos».
28 When the king heard this he was angry, and he called together all his Friends, the officers of his army, and the commanders of the cavalry.	28 El rey, al oír esto, se enfureció y convocó a todos sus Amigos, a los capitanes del ejército y a los comandantes de caballería.
29 Mercenary forces also came to him from other kingdoms and from the islands of the seas.	29 Además, le llegaron tropas mercenarias de otros reinos y de las islas del mar.
30 His army numbered a hundred thousand foot-soldiers, twenty thousand cavalry, and thirty-two elephants trained for war.	30 El número de sus fuerzas era de cien mil soldados, veinte mil jinetes y treinta y dos elefantes adiestrados para la guerra.
31 They passed through Idumea and camped before Beth-zur. For many days they attacked it; they constructed siege-devices, but the besieged made a sortie and burned these, and they fought bravely.	31 Entraron por Idumea y acamparon cerca de Betsur, atacándola durante mucho tiempo con máquinas de guerra. Pero los sitiados, en una salida sorpresiva, se las quemaron y combatieron valerosamente.
32 Then Judas marched away from the citadel and moved his camp to Beth-zechariah, on the way to the king's camp.	32 Entonces Judas levantó el sitio de la Ciudades y acampó en Betzacaría, frente al campamento del rey.
33 The king, rising before dawn, moved his force hastily along the road to Beth-zechariah; and the armies prepared for battle, while the trumpets sounded.	33 A la mañana siguiente, el rey se levantó de madrugada y condujo apresuradamente al ejército por el camino de Betzacaría. Las tropas se dispusieron para el ataque y se tocaron las trompetas.
34 They showed the elephants the juice of grapes and mulberries to provoke them to fight.	34 A los elefantes les mostraron mosto de uva y de moras para excitarlos al combate.
35 The beasts were distributed along the phalanxes, each elephant having assigned to it a thousand men in coats of mail, with bronze helmets, and five hundred picked cavalry.	35 Los animales estaban repartidos entre los batallones. Al lado de cada elefante se alineaban mil hombres con cota de malla y cascos de bronce, además de quinientos jinetes escogidos.
36 These anticipated the beast wherever it was; and wherever it moved, they moved too and never left it.	36 Estos estaban pendientes de los movimientos del animal, de manera que adonde iba él, iban también ellos, sin apartarse de su lado.
37 A strong wooden tower covering each elephant, and fastened to it by a harness, held, besides the Indian mahout, three soldiers who fought from it.	37 Cada elefante llevaba encima, sujeta con cinchas, una sólida torre de madera que servía de defensa, y en cada una de ellas iban tres guerreros que combatían desde allí, además del conductor.
38 The remaining cavalry were stationed on one or the other of the two flanks of the army, to harass the enemy and to be protected from the phalanxes.	38 En cuanto al resto de la caballería, el rey la ubicó a un lado y a otro, sobre los flancos del ejército, con la misión de hostigar al enemigo y cubrir a los batallones.
39 When the sun shone on the gold and bronze shields, the mountains gleamed with their brightness and blazed like flaming torches.	39 Cuando el sol brilló sobre el oro y el bronce de los escudos, sus reflejos iluminaron las montañas que relucían como antorchas.
40 Part of the king's army extended over the heights, while some were on low ground, but they marched forward steadily and in good order.	40 Una parte del ejército real se había alineado en lo alto de la montaña, y la otra en el valle. Todos avanzaban con paso seguro y en perfecto orden.
41 All who heard the noise of their numbers, the tramp of their marching, and the clashing of the arms, trembled; for the army was very great and strong.	41 Los israelitas se estremecían al oír el rumor de aquella multitud, el ruido de su marcha y el estrépito de sus armas, porque era un ejército inmenso y poderoso.
42 Judas with his army advanced to fight, and six hundred men of the king's army fell.	42 Entonces Judas se adelantó con sus tropas para entrar en batalla, y cayeron seiscientos hombres del ejército real.
43 Eleazar, called Avaran, saw one of the beasts bigger than any of the others and covered with royal armor, and he thought the king must be on it.	43 Mientras tanto, Eleazar, llamado Avarán, vio a un elefante pertrechado con una cota real, que sobresalía entre todos los demás, y pensó que en él iba el rey.
44 So he gave up his life to save his people and win an everlasting name for himself.	44 Entonces sacrificó su propia vida para salvar a su pueblo y adquirir una fama imperecedera.
45 He dashed up to it in the middle of the phalanx, killing men right and left, so that they fell back from him on both sides.	45 Corrió resueltamente hacia él, al través del batallón, matando a derecha e izquierda. Así se abrió paso a un lado y a otro
46 He ran right under the elephant and stabbed it in the belly, killing it. The beast fell to the ground on top of him, and he died there.	46 y se deslizó por debajo del elefante, clavándole su espada. Al desplomarse por tierra el animal, cayó sobre él y lo mató.
47 When the Jews saw the strength of the royal army and the ardor of its forces, they retreated from them.	47 Pero los judíos, al ver el poderío del rey y el empuje de sus tropas, emprendieron la retirada.
48 A part of the king's army went up to Jerusalem to attack them, and the king established camps in Judea and at Mount Zion.	48 El ejército real subió a Jerusalén, al encuentro de los judíos, y el rey acampó frente a Judea y al monte Sión.
49 He made peace with the men of Beth-zur, and they evacuated the city, because they had no food there to enable them to stand a siege, for that was a sabbath year in the land.	49 El hizo la paz con los habitantes de Betsur, que abandonaron la ciudad por carecer de víveres para resistir el asedio, ya que aquel era un año sabático para la tierra.
50 The king took Beth-zur and stationed a garrison there to hold it.	50 El rey ocupó Betsur y dejó allí una guarnición para su defensa.
51 For many days he besieged the sanctuary, setting up artillery and machines, fire-throwers, catapults and mechanical bows for shooting arrows and slingstones.	51 Durante mucho tiempo estuvo sitiando el Santuario. Levantó contra él ballestas y torres de asalto, lanzallamas y catapultas, lanza flechas y hondas.
52 The Jews countered by setting up machines of their own, and kept up the fight a long time.	52 Los sitiados, por su parte, construyeron armas similares para el contraataque, y así resistieron mucho tiempo.
53 But there were no provisions in the storerooms, because it was the seventh year, and the tide-over provisions had been eaten up by those who had been rescued from the Gentiles and brought to Judea.	53 Pero, al fin, se agotaron los víveres almacenados, porque era el séptimo año y, además, porque los refugiados en Judea, provenientes de las naciones, habían consumido las últimas reservas.
54 Few men remained in the sanctuary; the rest scattered, each to his own home, for the famine was too much for them.	54 Así no quedaron en el Santuario más que unos pocos hombres, porque se hacía sentir el hambre. Los demás se dispersaron, cada uno por su lado.
55 Lysias heard that Philip, whom King Antiochus, before his death, had appointed to train his son Antiochus to be king,	55 Mientras tanto, Lisias se enteró de que Filipo –a quien el rey Antíoco había encargado antes de morir que educara a su hijo Antíoco, para que fuera rey –
56 had returned from Persia and Media with the army that accompanied the king, and that he was seeking to take over the government.	56 había vuelto de Persia y de Media con las tropas que acompañaron al rey, y trataba de tomar el poder.
57 So he hastily resolved to withdraw. He said to the king, the leaders of the army, and the soldiers: "We are grow-ing weaker every day, our provisions are scanty, the place we are besieging is strong, and it is our duty to take care of the affairs of the kingdom.	57 Por eso pensó que era necesario partir en seguida y dijo al rey, a los capitanes del ejército y a los soldados: «Cada día estamos peor y escasean los víveres; el lugar que asediamos está bien fortificado y nos urgen los asuntos del reino.
58 Therefore let us now come to terms with these men, and make peace with them and all their nation.	58 Tendamos la mano a estos hombres, y hagamos la paz con ellos y con toda su nación.
59 Let us grant them freedom to live according to their own laws as formerly; it was on account of their laws, which we abolished, that they became angry and did all these things."	59 Dejemos que vivan según sus costumbres tradicionales, ya que se han irritado y han hecho todas estas cosas, porque nosotros hemos tratado de abolirlas».
60 The proposal found favor with the king and the leaders;	60 El rey y los capitanes aprobaron la propuesta, y el rey mandó ofrecer la paz a los sitiados. Estos la aceptaron,
61 he sent peace terms to the Jews, and they accepted. So the king and the leaders swore an oath to them, and on these terms they evacuated the fortification.	61 y el rey y los capitanes se comprometieron con un juramento.
62 But when the king entered Mount Zion and saw how the place was fortified, he broke the oath he had sworn and gave orders for the encircling wall to be destroyed.	62 Con esta garantía salieron de la fortaleza y el rey subió al monte Sión. Pero al ver las fortificaciones de aquel lugar, violó el juramento que había hecho y ordenó destruir la muralla que lo rodeaba.
63 Then he departed in haste and returned to Antioch, where he found Philip in possession of the city. He fought against him and took the city by force.	63 Luego partió rápidamente y volvió a Antioquía, donde encontró a Filipo dueño ya de la ciudad: lo atacó y ocupó la ciudad por la fuerza.
