NEW AMERICAN BIBLELXX
As King Antiochus was traversing the inland provinces, he heard that in Persia there was a city called Elymais, famous for its wealth in silver and gold,1 και ο βασιλευς αντιοχος διεπορευετο τας επανω χωρας και ηκουσεν οτι εστιν ελυμαις εν τη περσιδι πολις ενδοξος πλουτω αργυριω και χρυσιω
and that its temple was very rich, containing gold helmets, breastplates, and weapons left there by Alexander, son of Philip, king of Macedon, the first king of the Greeks.2 και το ιερον το εν αυτη πλουσιον σφοδρα και εκει καλυμματα χρυσα και θωρακες και οπλα α κατελιπεν εκει αλεξανδρος ο του φιλιππου ο βασιλευς ο μακεδων ος εβασιλευσεν πρωτος εν τοις ελλησι
He went therefore and tried to capture and pillage the city. But he could not do so, because his plan became known to the people of the city3 και ηλθεν και εζητει καταλαβεσθαι την πολιν και προνομευσαι αυτην και ουκ ηδυνασθη οτι εγνωσθη ο λογος τοις εκ της πολεως
who rose up in battle against him. So he retreated and in great dismay withdrew from there to return to Babylon.4 και αντεστησαν αυτω εις πολεμον και εφυγεν και απηρεν εκειθεν μετα λυπης μεγαλης αποστρεψαι εις βαβυλωνα
While he was in Persia, a messenger brought him news that the armies sent into the land of Judah had been put to flight;5 και ηλθεν τις απαγγελλων αυτω εις την περσιδα οτι τετροπωνται αι παρεμβολαι αι πορευθεισαι εις γην ιουδα
that Lysias had gone at first with a strong army and been driven back by the Israelites; that they had grown strong by reason of the arms, men, and abundant possessions taken from the armies they had destroyed;6 και επορευθη λυσιας δυναμει ισχυρα εν πρωτοις και ενετραπη απο προσωπου αυτων και επισχυσαν οπλοις και δυναμει και σκυλοις πολλοις οις ελαβον απο των παρεμβολων ων εξεκοψαν
that they had pulled down the Abomination which he had built upon the altar in Jerusalem; and that they had surrounded with high walls both the sanctuary, as it had been before, and his city of Beth-zur.7 και καθειλον το βδελυγμα ο ωκοδομησεν επι το θυσιαστηριον το εν ιερουσαλημ και το αγιασμα καθως το προτερον εκυκλωσαν τειχεσιν υψηλοις και την βαιθσουραν πολιν αυτου
When the king heard this news, he was struck with fear and very much shaken. Sick with grief because his designs had failed, he took to his bed.8 και εγενετο ως ηκουσεν ο βασιλευς τους λογους τουτους εθαμβηθη και εσαλευθη σφοδρα και επεσεν επι την κοιτην και ενεπεσεν εις αρρωστιαν απο της λυπης οτι ουκ εγενετο αυτω καθως ενεθυμειτο
There he remained many days, overwhelmed with sorrow, for he knew he was going to die.9 και ην εκει ημερας πλειους οτι ανεκαινισθη επ' αυτον λυπη μεγαλη και ελογισατο οτι αποθνησκει
So he called in all his Friends and said to them: "Sleep has departed from my eyes, for my heart is sinking with anxiety.10 και εκαλεσεν παντας τους φιλους αυτου και ειπεν προς αυτους αφισταται ο υπνος απο των οφθαλμων μου και συμπεπτωκα τη καρδια απο της μεριμνης
I said to myself: 'Into what tribulation have I come, and in what floods of sorrow am I now!11 και ειπα τη καρδια εως τινος θλιψεως ηλθα και κλυδωνος μεγαλου εν ω νυν ειμι οτι χρηστος και αγαπωμενος ημην εν τη εξουσια μου
Yet I was kindly and beloved in my rule.' But I now recall the evils I did in Jerusalem, when I carried away all the vessels of gold and silver that were in it, and for no cause gave orders that the inhabitants of Judah be destroyed.12 νυν δε μιμνησκομαι των κακων ων εποιησα εν ιερουσαλημ και ελαβον παντα τα σκευη τα αργυρα και τα χρυσα τα εν αυτη και εξαπεστειλα εξαραι τους κατοικουντας ιουδα δια κενης
I know that this is why these evils have overtaken me; and now I am dying, in bitter grief, in a foreign land."13 εγνων οτι χαριν τουτων ευρεν με τα κακα ταυτα και ιδου απολλυμαι λυπη μεγαλη εν γη αλλοτρια
Then he summoned Philip, one of his Friends, and put him in charge of his whole kingdom.14 και εκαλεσεν φιλιππον ενα των φιλων αυτου και κατεστησεν αυτον επι πασης της βασιλειας αυτου
He gave him his crown, his robe, and his signet ring, so that he might guide the king's son Antiochus and bring him up to be king.15 και εδωκεν αυτω το διαδημα και την στολην αυτου και τον δακτυλιον του αγαγειν αντιοχον τον υιον αυτου και εκθρεψαι αυτον του βασιλευειν
King Antiochus died in Persia in the year one hundred and forty-nine.16 και απεθανεν εκει αντιοχος ο βασιλευς ετους ενατου και τεσσαρακοστου και εκατοστου
When Lysias learned that the king was dead, he set up the king's son Antiochus, whom he had reared as a child, to be king in his place; and he gave him the title Eupator.17 και επεγνω λυσιας οτι τεθνηκεν ο βασιλευς και κατεστησεν βασιλευειν αντιοχον τον υιον αυτου ον εξεθρεψεν νεωτερον και εκαλεσεν το ονομα αυτου ευπατωρ
The men in the citadel were hemming in Israel around the sanctuary, continually trying to harm them and to strengthen the Gentiles.18 και οι εκ της ακρας ησαν συγκλειοντες τον ισραηλ κυκλω των αγιων και ζητουντες κακα δι' ολου και στηριγμα τοις εθνεσιν
But Judas planned to destroy them, and called all the people together to besiege them.19 και ελογισατο ιουδας εξαραι αυτους και εξεκκλησιασε παντα τον λαον του περικαθισαι επ' αυτους
So in the year one hundred and fifty they assembled and stormed the citadel, for which purpose he constructed catapults and other devices.20 και συνηχθησαν αμα και περιεκαθισαν επ' αυτην ετους πεντηκοστου και εκατοστου και εποιησεν βελοστασεις και μηχανας
Some of the besieged escaped, joined by impious Israelites;21 και εξηλθον εξ αυτων εκ του συγκλεισμου και εκολληθησαν αυτοις τινες των ασεβων εξ ισραηλ
they went to the king and said: "How long will you fail to do justice and avenge our kinsmen?22 και επορευθησαν προς τον βασιλεα και ειπον εως ποτε ου ποιηση κρισιν και εκδικησεις τους αδελφους ημων
We agreed to serve your father and to follow his orders and obey his edicts.23 ημεις ευδοκουμεν δουλευειν τω πατρι σου και πορευεσθαι τοις υπ' αυτου λεγομενοις και κατακολουθειν τοις προσταγμασιν αυτου
And for this the sons of our people have become our enemies; they have put to death as many of us as they could find and have plundered our estates.24 και περιεκαθηντο επ' αυτην οι υιοι του λαου ημων χαριν τουτου και ηλλοτριουντο αφ' ημων πλην οσοι ευρισκοντο εξ ημων εθανατουντο και αι κληρονομιαι ημων διηρπαζοντο
They have acted aggressively not only against us, but throughout their whole territory.25 και ουκ εφ' ημας μονον εξετειναν χειρα αλλα και επι παντα τα ορια αυτων
Look! They have now besieged the citadel in Jerusalem in order to capture it, and they have fortified the sanctuary and Beth-zur.26 και ιδου παρεμβεβληκασι σημερον επι την ακραν εν ιερουσαλημ του καταλαβεσθαι αυτην και το αγιασμα και την βαιθσουραν ωχυρωσαν
Unless you quickly forestall them, they will do even worse things than these, and you will not be able to stop them."27 και εαν μη προκαταλαβη αυτους δια ταχους μειζονα τουτων ποιησουσιν και ου δυνηση του κατασχειν αυτων
When the king heard this he was angry, and he called together all his Friends, the officers of his army, and the commanders of the cavalry.28 και ωργισθη ο βασιλευς οτε ηκουσεν και συνηγαγεν παντας τους φιλους αυτου αρχοντας δυναμεως αυτου και τους επι των ηνιων
Mercenary forces also came to him from other kingdoms and from the islands of the seas.29 και απο βασιλειων ετερων και απο νησων θαλασσων ηλθον προς αυτον δυναμεις μισθωται
His army numbered a hundred thousand foot-soldiers, twenty thousand cavalry, and thirty-two elephants trained for war.30 και ην ο αριθμος των δυναμεων αυτου εκατον χιλιαδες πεζων και εικοσι χιλιαδες ιππεων και ελεφαντες δυο και τριακοντα ειδοτες πολεμον
They passed through Idumea and camped before Beth-zur. For many days they attacked it; they constructed siege-devices, but the besieged made a sortie and burned these, and they fought bravely.31 και ηλθον δια της ιδουμαιας και παρενεβαλον επι βαιθσουραν και επολεμησαν ημερας πολλας και εποιησαν μηχανας και εξηλθον και ενεπυρισαν αυτας πυρι και επολεμησαν ανδρωδως
Then Judas marched away from the citadel and moved his camp to Beth-zechariah, on the way to the king's camp.32 και απηρεν ιουδας απο της ακρας και παρενεβαλεν εις βαιθζαχαρια απεναντι της παρεμβολης του βασιλεως
The king, rising before dawn, moved his force hastily along the road to Beth-zechariah; and the armies prepared for battle, while the trumpets sounded.33 και ωρθρισεν ο βασιλευς το πρωι και απηρεν την παρεμβολην εν ορμηματι αυτης κατα την οδον βαιθζαχαρια και διεσκευασθησαν αι δυναμεις εις τον πολεμον και εσαλπισαν ταις σαλπιγξιν
They showed the elephants the juice of grapes and mulberries to provoke them to fight.34 και τοις ελεφασιν εδειξαν αιμα σταφυλης και μορων του παραστησαι αυτους εις τον πολεμον
The beasts were distributed along the phalanxes, each elephant having assigned to it a thousand men in coats of mail, with bronze helmets, and five hundred picked cavalry.35 και διειλον τα θηρια εις τας φαλαγγας και παρεστησαν εκαστω ελεφαντι χιλιους ανδρας τεθωρακισμενους εν αλυσιδωτοις και περικεφαλαιαι χαλκαι επι των κεφαλων αυτων και πεντακοσια ιππος διατεταγμενη εκαστω θηριω εκλελεγμενη
These anticipated the beast wherever it was; and wherever it moved, they moved too and never left it.36 ουτοι προ καιρου ου αν η το θηριον ησαν και ου εαν επορευετο επορευοντο αμα ουκ αφισταντο απ' αυτου
A strong wooden tower covering each elephant, and fastened to it by a harness, held, besides the Indian mahout, three soldiers who fought from it.37 και πυργοι ξυλινοι επ' αυτους οχυροι σκεπαζομενοι εφ' εκαστου θηριου εζωσμενοι επ' αυτου μηχαναις και εφ' εκαστου ανδρες δυναμεως τεσσαρες οι πολεμουντες επ' αυτοις και ο ινδος αυτου
The remaining cavalry were stationed on one or the other of the two flanks of the army, to harass the enemy and to be protected from the phalanxes.38 και την επιλοιπον ιππον ενθεν και ενθεν εστησεν επι τα δυο μερη της παρεμβολης κατασειοντες και καταφρασσομενοι εν ταις φαλαγξιν
When the sun shone on the gold and bronze shields, the mountains gleamed with their brightness and blazed like flaming torches.39 ως δε εστιλβεν ο ηλιος επι τας χρυσας και χαλκας ασπιδας εστιλβεν τα ορη απ' αυτων και κατηυγαζεν ως λαμπαδες πυρος
Part of the king's army extended over the heights, while some were on low ground, but they marched forward steadily and in good order.40 και εξεταθη μερος τι της παρεμβολης του βασιλεως επι τα υψηλα ορη και τινες επι τα ταπεινα και ηρχοντο ασφαλως και τεταγμενως
All who heard the noise of their numbers, the tramp of their marching, and the clashing of the arms, trembled; for the army was very great and strong.41 και εσαλευοντο παντες οι ακουοντες φωνης πληθους αυτων και οδοιποριας του πληθους και συγκρουσμου των οπλων ην γαρ η παρεμβολη μεγαλη σφοδρα και ισχυρα
Judas with his army advanced to fight, and six hundred men of the king's army fell.42 και ηγγισεν ιουδας και η παρεμβολη αυτου εις παραταξιν και επεσον απο της παρεμβολης του βασιλεως εξακοσιοι ανδρες
Eleazar, called Avaran, saw one of the beasts bigger than any of the others and covered with royal armor, and he thought the king must be on it.43 και ειδεν ελεαζαρος ο αυαραν εν των θηριων τεθωρακισμενον θωραξιν βασιλικοις και ην υπεραγον παντα τα θηρια και ωηθη οτι εν αυτω εστιν ο βασιλευς
So he gave up his life to save his people and win an everlasting name for himself.44 και εδωκεν εαυτον του σωσαι τον λαον αυτου και περιποιησαι εαυτω ονομα αιωνιον
He dashed up to it in the middle of the phalanx, killing men right and left, so that they fell back from him on both sides.45 και επεδραμεν αυτω θρασει εις μεσον της φαλαγγος και εθανατου δεξια και ευωνυμα και εσχιζοντο απ' αυτου ενθα και ενθα
He ran right under the elephant and stabbed it in the belly, killing it. The beast fell to the ground on top of him, and he died there.46 και εισεδυ υπο τον ελεφαντα και υπεθηκεν αυτω και ανειλεν αυτον και επεσεν επι την γην επανω αυτου και απεθανεν εκει
When the Jews saw the strength of the royal army and the ardor of its forces, they retreated from them.47 και ειδον την ισχυν της βασιλειας και το ορμημα των δυναμεων και εξεκλιναν απ' αυτων
A part of the king's army went up to Jerusalem to attack them, and the king established camps in Judea and at Mount Zion.48 οι δε εκ της παρεμβολης του βασιλεως ανεβαινον εις συναντησιν αυτων εις ιερουσαλημ και παρενεβαλεν ο βασιλευς εις την ιουδαιαν και εις το ορος σιων
He made peace with the men of Beth-zur, and they evacuated the city, because they had no food there to enable them to stand a siege, for that was a sabbath year in the land.49 και εποιησεν ειρηνην μετα των εκ βαιθσουρων και εξηλθον εκ της πολεως οτι ουκ ην αυτοις εκει διατροφη του συγκεκλεισθαι εν αυτη οτι σαββατον ην τη γη
The king took Beth-zur and stationed a garrison there to hold it.50 και κατελαβετο ο βασιλευς την βαιθσουραν και απεταξεν εκει φρουραν τηρειν αυτην
For many days he besieged the sanctuary, setting up artillery and machines, fire-throwers, catapults and mechanical bows for shooting arrows and slingstones.51 και παρενεβαλεν επι το αγιασμα ημερας πολλας και εστησεν εκει βελοστασεις και μηχανας και πυροβολα και λιθοβολα και σκορπιδια εις το βαλλεσθαι βελη και σφενδονας
The Jews countered by setting up machines of their own, and kept up the fight a long time.52 και εποιησαν και αυτοι μηχανας προς τας μηχανας αυτων και επολεμησαν ημερας πολλας
But there were no provisions in the storerooms, because it was the seventh year, and the tide-over provisions had been eaten up by those who had been rescued from the Gentiles and brought to Judea.53 βρωματα δε ουκ ην εν τοις αγγειοις δια το εβδομον ετος ειναι και οι ανασωζομενοι εις την ιουδαιαν απο των εθνων κατεφαγον το υπολειμμα της παραθεσεως
Few men remained in the sanctuary; the rest scattered, each to his own home, for the famine was too much for them.54 και υπελειφθησαν εν τοις αγιοις ανδρες ολιγοι οτι κατεκρατησεν αυτων ο λιμος και εσκορπισθησαν εκαστος εις τον τοπον αυτου
Lysias heard that Philip, whom King Antiochus, before his death, had appointed to train his son Antiochus to be king,55 και ηκουσεν λυσιας οτι φιλιππος ον κατεστησεν ο βασιλευς αντιοχος ετι ζωντος αυτου εκθρεψαι αντιοχον τον υιον αυτου εις το βασιλευσαι αυτον
had returned from Persia and Media with the army that accompanied the king, and that he was seeking to take over the government.56 απεστρεψεν απο της περσιδος και μηδιας και αι δυναμεις αι πορευθεισαι μετα του βασιλεως μετ' αυτου και οτι ζητει παραλαβειν τα των πραγματων
So he hastily resolved to withdraw. He said to the king, the leaders of the army, and the soldiers: "We are grow-ing weaker every day, our provisions are scanty, the place we are besieging is strong, and it is our duty to take care of the affairs of the kingdom.57 και κατεσπευδεν και επενευσεν του απελθειν και ειπεν προς τον βασιλεα και τους ηγεμονας της δυναμεως και τους ανδρας εκλειπομεν καθ' ημεραν και η τροφη ημιν ολιγη και ο τοπος ου παρεμβαλλομεν εστιν οχυρος και επικειται ημιν τα της βασιλειας
Therefore let us now come to terms with these men, and make peace with them and all their nation.58 νυν ουν δωμεν δεξιας τοις ανθρωποις τουτοις και ποιησωμεν μετ' αυτων ειρηνην και μετα παντος εθνους αυτων
Let us grant them freedom to live according to their own laws as formerly; it was on account of their laws, which we abolished, that they became angry and did all these things."59 και στησωμεν αυτοις του πορευεσθαι τοις νομιμοις αυτων ως το προτερον χαριν γαρ των νομιμων αυτων ων διεσκεδασαμεν ωργισθησαν και εποιησαν ταυτα παντα
The proposal found favor with the king and the leaders;60 και ηρεσεν ο λογος εναντιον του βασιλεως και των αρχοντων και απεστειλεν προς αυτους ειρηνευσαι και επεδεξαντο
he sent peace terms to the Jews, and they accepted. So the king and the leaders swore an oath to them, and on these terms they evacuated the fortification.61 και ωμοσεν αυτοις ο βασιλευς και οι αρχοντες επι τουτοις εξηλθον εκ του οχυρωματος
But when the king entered Mount Zion and saw how the place was fortified, he broke the oath he had sworn and gave orders for the encircling wall to be destroyed.62 και εισηλθεν ο βασιλευς εις ορος σιων και ειδεν το οχυρωμα του τοπου και ηθετησεν τον ορκισμον ον ωμοσεν και ενετειλατο καθελειν το τειχος κυκλοθεν
Then he departed in haste and returned to Antioch, where he found Philip in possession of the city. He fought against him and took the city by force.63 και απηρεν κατα σπουδην και απεστρεψεν εις αντιοχειαν και ευρεν φιλιππον κυριευοντα της πολεως και επολεμησεν προς αυτον και κατελαβετο την πολιν βια
