Exodus 18

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	JERUSALEM
1 Now Moses' father-in-law Jethro, the priest of Midian, heard of all that God had done for Moses and for his people Israel: how the LORD had brought Israel out of Egypt.	1 Jéthro, prêtre de Madiân, beau-père de Moïse, entendit raconter tout ce que Dieu avait fait pourMoïse et pour Israël son peuple: comment Yahvé avait fait sortir Israël d'Egypte.
2 So his father-in-law Jethro took along Zipporah, Moses' wife, whom Moses had sent back to him,	2 Jéthro, le beau-père de Moïse, prit Cippora, la femme de Moïse, après qu'il l'eut renvoyée,
3 and her two sons. One of these was called Gershom; for he said, "I am a stranger in a foreign land."	3 ainsi que ses deux fils. L'un s'appelait Gershom car, avait-il dit, "Je suis un immigré en terreétrangère",
4 The other was called Eliezer; for he said, "My father's God is my helper; he has rescued me from Pharaoh's sword."	4 l'autre s'appelait Eliézer car, "le Dieu de mon père est mon secours et m'a délivré de l'épée dePharaon."
5 Together with Moses' wife and sons, then, his father-in-law Jethro came to him in the desert where he was encamped near the mountain of God,	5 Jéthro, le beau-père de Moïse, vint trouver Moïse avec ses fils et sa femme au désert où il campait, àla montagne de Dieu.
6 and he sent word to Moses, "I, Jethro, your father-in-law, am coming to you, along with your wife and her two sons."	6 L'on dit à Moïse: "Voici ton beau-père Jéthro qui vient vers toi, accompagné de ta femme et sesdeux fils."
7 Moses went out to meet his father-in-law, bowed down before him, and kissed him. Having greeted each other, they went into the tent.	7 Moïse sortit à la rencontre de son beau-père, se prosterna devant lui, l'embrassa et, s'étantmutuellement interrogés sur leur santé, ils se rendirent à la tente.
8 Moses then told his father-in-law of all that the LORD had done to Pharaoh and the Egyptians for the sake of Israel, and of all the hardships they had had to endure on their journey, and how the LORD had come to their rescue.	8 Moïse raconta à son beau-père tout ce que Yahvé avait fait à Pharaon et aux Egyptiens à caused'Israël, ainsi que toutes les tribulations qu'ils avaient rencontrées en chemin, et dont Yahvé les avait délivrés.
9 Jethro rejoiced over all the goodness that the LORD had shown Israel in rescuing them from the hands of the Egyptians.	9 Jéthro se réjouit de tout le bien que Yahvé avait fait à Israël, de ce qu'il l'avait délivré de la main desEgyptiens.
10 "Blessed be the LORD," he said, "who has rescued his people from the hands of Pharaoh and the Egyptians.	10 Jéthro dit alors: "Béni soit Yahvé qui vous a délivrés de la main des Egyptiens et de la main dePharaon, qui a délivré le peuple de la sujétion égyptienne.
11 Now I know that the LORD is a deity great beyond any other; for he took occasion of their being dealt with insolently to deliver the people from the power of the Egyptians."	11 Maintenant je sais que Yahvé est plus grand que tous les dieux..."
12 Then Jethro, the father-in-law of Moses, brought a holocaust and other sacrifices to God, and Aaron came with all the elders of Israel to participate with Moses' father-in-law in the meal before God.	12 Jéthro, le beau-père de Moïse, offrit à Dieu un holocauste et des sacrifices. Aaron et tous lesanciens d'Israël vinrent manger avec le beau-père de Moïse en présence de Dieu.
13 The next day Moses sat in judgment for the people, who waited about him from morning until evening.	13 Le lendemain, Moïse s'assit pour rendre la justice au peuple, tandis que le peuple demeurait deboutauprès de lui du matin au soir.
14 When his father-in-law saw all that he was doing for the people, he inquired, "What sort of thing is this that you are doing for the people? Why do you sit alone while all the people have to stand about you from morning till evening?"	14 Le beau-père de Moïse, voyant tout ce qu'il faisait pour le peuple, lui dit: "Comment t'y prends-tupour traiter seul les affaires du peuple? Pourquoi sièges-tu seul alors que tout le peuple se tient auprès de toi dumatin au soir?"
15 Moses answered his father-in-law, "The people come to me to consult God.	15 Moïse dit à son beau-père: "C'est que le peuple vient à moi pour consulter Dieu.
16 Whenever they have a disagreement, they come to me to have me settle the matter between them and make known to them God's decisions and regulations."	16 Lorsqu'ils ont une affaire, ils viennent à moi. Je juge entre l'un et l'autre et je leur fais connaître lesdécrets de Dieu et ses lois."
17 "You are not acting wisely," his father-in-law replied.	17 Le beau-père de Moïse lui dit: "Tu t'y prends mal!
18 "You will surely wear yourself out, and not only yourself but also these people with you. The task is too heavy for you; you cannot do it alone.	18 A coup sûr tu t'épuiseras, toi et le peuple qui est avec toi, car la tâche est trop lourde pour toi; tu nepourras pas l'accomplir seul.
19 Now, listen to me, and I will give you some advice, that God may be with you. Act as the people's representative before God, bringing to him whatever they have to say.	19 Maintenant écoute le conseil que je vais te donner pour que Dieu soit avec toi. Tiens-toi à la placedu peuple devant Dieu, et introduis toi-même leurs causes auprès de Dieu.
20 Enlighten them in regard to the decisions and regulations, showing them how they are to live and what they are to do.	20 Instruis-les des décrets et des lois, fais-leur connaître la voie à suivre et la conduite à tenir.
21 But you should also look among all the people for able and God-fearing men, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain, and set them as officers over groups of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of tens.	21 Mais choisis-toi parmi tout le peuple des hommes capables, craignant Dieu, sûrs, incorruptibles, etétablis-les sur eux comme chefs de milliers, chefs de centaines, chefs de cinquantaines et chefs de dizaines.
22 Let these men render decisions for the people in all ordinary cases. More important cases they should refer to you, but all the lesser cases they can settle themselves. Thus, your burden will be lightened, since they will bear it with you.	22 Ils jugeront le peuple en tout temps. Toute affaire importante, ils te la déféreront et toute affairemineure, ils la jugeront eux-mêmes. Allège ainsi ta charge et qu'ils la portent avec toi.
23 If you do this, when God gives you orders you will be able to stand the strain, and all these people will go home satisfied."	23 Si tu fais cela et que Dieu te l'ordonne tu pourras tenir et tout ce peuple, de son côté, pourra rentreren paix chez lui."
24 Moses followed the advice of his father-in-law and did all that he had suggested.	24 Moïse suivit le conseil de son beau-père et fit tout ce qu'il lui avait dit.
25 He picked out able men from all Israel and put them in charge of the people as officers over groups of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of tens.	25 Moïse choisit dans tout Israël des hommes capables, et il les mit chefs du peuple: chefs de milliers,chefs de centaines, chefs de cinquantaines et chefs de dizaines.
26 They rendered decisions for the people in all ordinary cases. The more difficult cases they referred to Moses, but all the lesser cases they settled themselves.	26 Et ils jugeaient le peuple en tout temps. Toute affaire importante, ils la déféraient à Moïse, et touteaffaire mineure, ils la jugeaient eux-mêmes.
27 Then Moses bade farewell to his father-in-law, who went off to his own country.	27 Puis Moïse laissa repartir son beau-père qui reprit le chemin de son pays.
