1 Now Moses' father-in-law Jethro, the priest of Midian, heard of all that God had done for Moses and for his people Israel: how the LORD had brought Israel out of Egypt.	1 Jéthro était prêtre de Madian et beau-père de Moïse. Il apprit tout ce que Dieu avait fait pour Moïse et pour Israël son peuple lorsque Yahvé avait fait sortir Israël d’Égypte.
2 So his father-in-law Jethro took along Zipporah, Moses' wife, whom Moses had sent back to him,	2 Jéthro, beau-père de Moïse, avait recueilli Séfora, car Moïse l’avait renvoyée
3 and her two sons. One of these was called Gershom; for he said, "I am a stranger in a foreign land."	3 avec ses deux fils. L’un s’appelait Guerchom, car Moïse avait dit: “Je suis un immigré sur une terre étrangère.”
4 The other was called Eliezer; for he said, "My father's God is my helper; he has rescued me from Pharaoh's sword."	4 Et l’autre s’appelait Éliézer, car il avait dit: “Le Dieu de mon père est venu à mon aide et il m’a délivré de l’épée du Pharaon.”
5 Together with Moses' wife and sons, then, his father-in-law Jethro came to him in the desert where he was encamped near the mountain of God,	5 Jéthro, le beau-père de Moïse, amena donc à Moïse sa femme et ses fils alors qu’il campait au désert, à la montagne de Dieu.
6 and he sent word to Moses, "I, Jethro, your father-in-law, am coming to you, along with your wife and her two sons."	6 Il fit dire à Moïse: “Moi, Jéthro, ton beau-père, je suis venu te trouver avec ta femme et tes deux fils.”
7 Moses went out to meet his father-in-law, bowed down before him, and kissed him. Having greeted each other, they went into the tent.	7 Moïse sortit à la rencontre de son beau-père, il se prosterna et l’embrassa. Puis ils se demandèrent l’un à l’autre des nouvelles de leur santé et ils entrèrent sous la tente.
8 Moses then told his father-in-law of all that the LORD had done to Pharaoh and the Egyptians for the sake of Israel, and of all the hardships they had had to endure on their journey, and how the LORD had come to their rescue.	8 Moïse raconta à son beau-père tout ce que Yahvé avait fait au Pharaon et à l’Égypte pour le bien d’Israël, et toutes les difficultés qu’ils avaient rencontrées sur la route, mais dont Yahvé les avait délivrés.
9 Jethro rejoiced over all the goodness that the LORD had shown Israel in rescuing them from the hands of the Egyptians.	9 Jéthro fut très heureux d’apprendre tout le bien que Yahvé avait fait à Israël et comment il l’avait délivré de la main des Égyptiens.
10 "Blessed be the LORD," he said, "who has rescued his people from the hands of Pharaoh and the Egyptians.	10 Alors Jéthro dit à Moïse: “Béni soit Yahvé qui vous a délivrés de l’Égypte et de la main du Pharaon: il a délivré son peuple de l’oppression des Égyptiens!
11 Now I know that the LORD is a deity great beyond any other; for he took occasion of their being dealt with insolently to deliver the people from the power of the Egyptians."	11 Maintenant je sais que Yahvé est plus grand que tous les autres dieux, il l’a bien montré lorsque l’on maltraitait son peuple.”
12 Then Jethro, the father-in-law of Moses, brought a holocaust and other sacrifices to God, and Aaron came with all the elders of Israel to participate with Moses' father-in-law in the meal before God.	12 Jéthro, le beau-père de Moïse, offrit un sacrifice et présenta des offrandes à Dieu, puis Aaron et tous les anciens d’Israël vinrent prendre un repas avec le beau-père de Moïse en présence de Dieu.
13 The next day Moses sat in judgment for the people, who waited about him from morning until evening.	13 Le lendemain Moïse s’assit pour rendre justice au peuple, et il y eut des gens autour de Moïse du matin jusqu’au soir.
14 When his father-in-law saw all that he was doing for the people, he inquired, "What sort of thing is this that you are doing for the people? Why do you sit alone while all the people have to stand about you from morning till evening?"	14 Le beau-père de Moïse vit tout ce qu’il faisait pour le peuple. Il lui dit: “Tu t’en donnes du mal pour ce peuple! Pourquoi sièges-tu seul, pendant que tout ce peuple reste là debout à tes côtés du matin jusqu’au soir?”
15 Moses answered his father-in-law, "The people come to me to consult God.	15 Moïse répondit à son beau-père: “Le peuple vient vers moi pour consulter Dieu.
16 Whenever they have a disagreement, they come to me to have me settle the matter between them and make known to them God's decisions and regulations."	16 Lorsqu’il y a un problème, on vient vers moi et je décide entre les uns et les autres. Ensuite je fais connaître les règles de Dieu et ses enseignements.”
17 "You are not acting wisely," his father-in-law replied.	17 Le beau-père de Moïse lui dit: “Tu t’y prends mal!
18 "You will surely wear yourself out, and not only yourself but also these people with you. The task is too heavy for you; you cannot do it alone.	18 Tu vas t’épuiser, tout comme le peuple qui est avec toi! La charge est trop lourde pour toi, tu ne peux pas la porter seul.
19 Now, listen to me, and I will give you some advice, that God may be with you. Act as the people's representative before God, bringing to him whatever they have to say.	19 Écoute-moi maintenant, je vais te donner un conseil et Dieu sera avec toi! Sois pour ton peuple le représentant de Dieu et présente-lui ses problèmes.
20 Enlighten them in regard to the decisions and regulations, showing them how they are to live and what they are to do.	20 Tu leur expliqueras les commandements et les lois, tu leur feras connaître le chemin sur lequel ils doivent marcher et la façon dont ils doivent agir.
21 But you should also look among all the people for able and God-fearing men, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain, and set them as officers over groups of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of tens.	21 Mais aussi tu choisiras du milieu du peuple des hommes de valeur qui craignent Dieu, des hommes sincères qui refusent de se laisser corrompre, et tu les mettras à leur tête comme chefs de mille, chefs de cent, chefs de cinquante et chefs de dix.
22 Let these men render decisions for the people in all ordinary cases. More important cases they should refer to you, but all the lesser cases they can settle themselves. Thus, your burden will be lightened, since they will bear it with you.	22 “Ils rendront la justice dans ton peuple en tout temps et, s’il y a une affaire importante, ils te la présenteront. Mais ils jugeront les petites affaires, et ta charge sera moins lourde car ils la porteront avec toi.
23 If you do this, when God gives you orders you will be able to stand the strain, and all these people will go home satisfied."	23 “Si tu fais cela, Dieu te conduira et tu pourras résister. Ainsi tout le peuple arrivera heureusement là où Dieu le conduit.”
24 Moses followed the advice of his father-in-law and did all that he had suggested.	24 Moïse écouta son beau-père et fit ce qu’il lui avait dit.
25 He picked out able men from all Israel and put them in charge of the people as officers over groups of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of tens.	25 Il choisit donc des hommes de valeur du milieu d’Israël et il les plaça à la tête du peuple comme chefs de mille, chefs de cent, chefs de cinquante et chefs de dix.
26 They rendered decisions for the people in all ordinary cases. The more difficult cases they referred to Moses, but all the lesser cases they settled themselves.	26 Ils rendaient la justice au peuple en tout temps. Ils présentaient à Moïse les affaires importantes et rendaient la justice eux-mêmes pour toutes les petites affaires.
27 Then Moses bade farewell to his father-in-law, who went off to his own country.	27 Moïse reconduisit ensuite son beau-père, qui retourna dans son pays.
