1 Now Moses' father-in-law Jethro, the priest of Midian, heard of all that God had done for Moses and for his people Israel: how the LORD had brought Israel out of Egypt.	1 Ietro, sacerdote di Madian, suocero di Mosè, venne a sapere quanto Dio aveva operato per Mosè e per Israele, suo popolo, cioè come il Signore aveva fatto uscire Israele dall’Egitto.
2 So his father-in-law Jethro took along Zipporah, Moses' wife, whom Moses had sent back to him,	2 Allora Ietro prese con sé Sipporà, moglie di Mosè, che prima egli aveva rimandata,
3 and her two sons. One of these was called Gershom; for he said, "I am a stranger in a foreign land."	3 con i due figli di lei, uno dei quali si chiamava Ghersom, perché egli aveva detto: «Sono un emigrato in terra straniera»,
4 The other was called Eliezer; for he said, "My father's God is my helper; he has rescued me from Pharaoh's sword."	4 e l’altro si chiamava Elièzer, perché: «Il Dio di mio padre è venuto in mio aiuto e mi ha liberato dalla spada del faraone».
5 Together with Moses' wife and sons, then, his father-in-law Jethro came to him in the desert where he was encamped near the mountain of God,	5 Ietro dunque, suocero di Mosè, con i figli e la moglie di lui, venne da Mosè nel deserto, dove era accampato, presso la montagna di Dio.
6 and he sent word to Moses, "I, Jethro, your father-in-law, am coming to you, along with your wife and her two sons."	6 Egli fece dire a Mosè: «Sono io, Ietro, tuo suocero, che vengo da te con tua moglie e i suoi due figli!».
7 Moses went out to meet his father-in-law, bowed down before him, and kissed him. Having greeted each other, they went into the tent.	7 Mosè andò incontro al suocero, si prostrò davanti a lui e lo baciò; poi si informarono l’uno della salute dell’altro ed entrarono sotto la tenda.
8 Moses then told his father-in-law of all that the LORD had done to Pharaoh and the Egyptians for the sake of Israel, and of all the hardships they had had to endure on their journey, and how the LORD had come to their rescue.	8 Mosè raccontò al suocero quanto il Signore aveva fatto al faraone e agli Egiziani a motivo di Israele, tutte le difficoltà incontrate durante il viaggio, dalle quali il Signore li aveva liberati.
9 Jethro rejoiced over all the goodness that the LORD had shown Israel in rescuing them from the hands of the Egyptians.	9 Ietro si rallegrò di tutto il bene che il Signore aveva fatto a Israele, quando lo aveva liberato dalla mano degli Egiziani.
10 "Blessed be the LORD," he said, "who has rescued his people from the hands of Pharaoh and the Egyptians.	10 Disse Ietro: «Benedetto il Signore, che vi ha liberato dalla mano degli Egiziani e dalla mano del faraone: egli ha liberato questo popolo dalla mano dell’Egitto!
11 Now I know that the LORD is a deity great beyond any other; for he took occasion of their being dealt with insolently to deliver the people from the power of the Egyptians."	11 Ora io so che il Signore è più grande di tutti gli dèi: ha rivolto contro di loro quello che tramavano».
12 Then Jethro, the father-in-law of Moses, brought a holocaust and other sacrifices to God, and Aaron came with all the elders of Israel to participate with Moses' father-in-law in the meal before God.	12 Ietro, suocero di Mosè, offrì un olocausto e sacrifici a Dio. Vennero Aronne e tutti gli anziani d’Israele, per partecipare al banchetto con il suocero di Mosè davanti a Dio.
13 The next day Moses sat in judgment for the people, who waited about him from morning until evening.	13 Il giorno dopo Mosè sedette a render giustizia al popolo e il popolo si trattenne presso Mosè dalla mattina fino alla sera.
14 When his father-in-law saw all that he was doing for the people, he inquired, "What sort of thing is this that you are doing for the people? Why do you sit alone while all the people have to stand about you from morning till evening?"	14 Allora il suocero di Mosè, visto quanto faceva per il popolo, gli disse: «Che cos’è questo che fai per il popolo? Perché siedi tu solo, mentre il popolo sta presso di te dalla mattina alla sera?».
15 Moses answered his father-in-law, "The people come to me to consult God.	15 Mosè rispose al suocero: «Perché il popolo viene da me per consultare Dio.
16 Whenever they have a disagreement, they come to me to have me settle the matter between them and make known to them God's decisions and regulations."	16 Quando hanno qualche questione, vengono da me e io giudico le vertenze tra l’uno e l’altro e faccio conoscere i decreti di Dio e le sue leggi».
17 "You are not acting wisely," his father-in-law replied.	17 Il suocero di Mosè gli disse: «Non va bene quello che fai!
18 "You will surely wear yourself out, and not only yourself but also these people with you. The task is too heavy for you; you cannot do it alone.	18 Finirai per soccombere, tu e il popolo che è con te, perché il compito è troppo pesante per te; non puoi attendervi tu da solo.
19 Now, listen to me, and I will give you some advice, that God may be with you. Act as the people's representative before God, bringing to him whatever they have to say.	19 Ora ascoltami: ti voglio dare un consiglio e Dio sia con te! Tu sta’ davanti a Dio in nome del popolo e presenta le questioni a Dio.
20 Enlighten them in regard to the decisions and regulations, showing them how they are to live and what they are to do.	20 A loro spiegherai i decreti e le leggi; indicherai loro la via per la quale devono camminare e le opere che devono compiere.
21 But you should also look among all the people for able and God-fearing men, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain, and set them as officers over groups of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of tens.	21 Invece sceglierai tra tutto il popolo uomini validi che temono Dio, uomini retti che odiano la venalità, per costituirli sopra di loro come capi di migliaia, capi di centinaia, capi di cinquantine e capi di decine.
22 Let these men render decisions for the people in all ordinary cases. More important cases they should refer to you, but all the lesser cases they can settle themselves. Thus, your burden will be lightened, since they will bear it with you.	22 Essi dovranno giudicare il popolo in ogni circostanza; quando vi sarà una questione importante, la sottoporranno a te, mentre essi giudicheranno ogni affare minore. Così ti alleggerirai il peso ed essi lo porteranno con te.
23 If you do this, when God gives you orders you will be able to stand the strain, and all these people will go home satisfied."	23 Se tu fai questa cosa e Dio te lo ordina, potrai resistere e anche tutto questo popolo arriverà in pace alla meta».
24 Moses followed the advice of his father-in-law and did all that he had suggested.	24 Mosè diede ascolto alla proposta del suocero e fece quanto gli aveva suggerito.
25 He picked out able men from all Israel and put them in charge of the people as officers over groups of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of tens.	25 Mosè dunque scelse in tutto Israele uomini validi e li costituì alla testa del popolo come capi di migliaia, capi di centinaia, capi di cinquantine e capi di decine.
26 They rendered decisions for the people in all ordinary cases. The more difficult cases they referred to Moses, but all the lesser cases they settled themselves.	26 Essi giudicavano il popolo in ogni circostanza: quando avevano affari difficili li sottoponevano a Mosè, ma giudicavano essi stessi tutti gli affari minori.
27 Then Moses bade farewell to his father-in-law, who went off to his own country.	27 Poi Mosè congedò il suocero, il quale tornò alla sua terra.
