1 When the day arrived on which the order decreed by the king was to be carried out, the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, Adar, on which the enemies of the Jews had expected to become masters of them, the situation was reversed: the Jews became masters of their enemies.	1 Le treizième jour du douzième mois (le mois d’Adar), la situation se retourna. Ce jour même où l’on devait exécuter l’ordre du roi et son décret, ce jour où les ennemis des Juifs avaient pensé les exterminer, les Juifs triomphèrent de ceux qui les détestaient.
2 The Jews mustered in their cities throughout the provinces of King Ahasuerus to attack those who sought to do them harm, and no one could withstand them, but all peoples were seized with a fear of them.	2 Dans toutes les provinces du royaume d’Assuérus, les Juifs se réunirent dans leurs villes pour frapper ceux qui leur voulaient du mal; personne ne put leur résister, car tous les peuples avaient peur des Juifs.
3 Moreover, all the officials of the provinces, the satraps, governors, and royal procurators supported the Jews from fear of Mordecai;	3 Tous les gouverneurs de province, les chefs, les responsables et les fonctionnaires du roi, aidaient les Juifs par peur de Mardochée.
4 for Mordecai was powerful in the royal palace, and the report was spreading through all the provinces that he was continually growing in power.	4 Car Mardochée était un personnage important dans le palais royal, sa renommée s’était répandue dans toutes les provinces et cet homme, Mardochée, devenait de plus en plus puissant.
5 The Jews struck down all their enemies with the sword, killing and destroying them; they did to their enemies as they pleased.	5 Les Juifs frappèrent à coups d’épée tous leurs ennemis; ce fut une tuerie, un massacre! Ils traitèrent comme ils le voulaient tous ceux qui les détestaient.
6 In the stronghold of Susa, the Jews killed and destroyed five hundred men.	6 Dans la forteresse de Suse, les Juifs tuèrent et massacrèrent 500 hommes.
7 They also killed Parshandatha, Dalphon, Aspatha,	7 Parchandata, Dalfon, Aspata,
8 Porathai, Adalia, Aridatha, 9 Parmashta, Arisai, Aridai, and Vaizatha,	8 Porata, Adalya, Aridata,
	9 Parmachta, Arisaï, Aridaï et Yézada,
10 the ten sons of Haman, son of Hammedatha, the foe of the Jews. However, they did not engage in plundering.	10 les 10 fils d’Aman, fils de Hamdata, l’ennemi des Juifs, furent mis à mort; cependant les Juifs ne se livrèrent pas au pillage.
11 On the same day, when the number of those killed in the stronghold of Susa was reported to the king,	11 Ce jour-là, on apprit au roi le nombre de ceux qui avaient été mis à mort dans la forteresse de Suse.
12 he said to Queen Esther: "In the stronghold of Susa the Jews have killed and destroyed five hundred men, as well as the ten sons of Haman. What must they have done in the other royal provinces! You shall again be granted whatever you ask, and whatever you request shall be honored."	12 Le roi dit alors à la reine Esther: "Rien que dans la forteresse de Suse, les Juifs ont tué et massacré 500 hommes et les 10 fils d’Aman; que n’auront-ils fait dans les autres provinces! Mais dis-moi ce que tu veux, cela te sera accordé. As-tu une demande? Cela sera fait.”
13 So Esther said, "If it pleases your majesty, let the Jews in Susa be permitted again tomorrow to act according to today's decree, and let the ten sons of Haman be hanged on gibbets."	13 Esther lui dit: "Si le roi le veut bien, qu’il accorde aux Juifs de Suse de continuer demain comme ils ont fait aujourd’hui, selon le décret du roi, et qu’on pende à la potence les 10 fils d’Aman.”
14 The king then gave an order to this effect, and the decree was published in Susa. So the ten sons of Haman were hanged,	14 Le roi décida que l’on ferait ainsi. On publia un décret dans Suse, et l’on pendit les 10 fils d’Aman.
15 and the Jews in Susa mustered again on the fourteenth of the month of Adar and killed three hundred men in Susa. However, they did not engage in plundering.	15 Les Juifs de Suse se rassemblèrent le quatorzième jour du mois d’Adar et tuèrent encore dans Suse, 300 hommes, mais ils ne se livrèrent pas au pillage.
16 The other Jews, who dwelt in the royal provinces, also mustered and defended themselves, and obtained rest from their enemies. They killed seventy-five thousand of their foes, without engaging in plunder,	16 Les autres Juifs qui étaient dans les provinces du royaume, se réunirent aussi pour défendre leurs vies; ils firent le nécessaire pour être tranquilles du côté de ceux qui les détestaient, et tuèrent 75 000 de leurs ennemis; mais ils ne se livrèrent pas au pillage.
17 on the thirteenth day of the month of Adar. On the fourteenth of the month they rested, and made it a day of feasting and rejoicing.	17 Ils firent cela le treizième jour du mois d’Adar, et ils firent du quatorzième jour un jour de repos, de banquets et de fête.
18 (The Jews in Susa, however, mustered on the thirteenth and fourteenth of the month. But on the fifteenth they rested, and made it a day of feasting and rejoicing.)	18 Les Juifs qui étaient à Suse se réunirent le 13 et le 14 du mois, et ils firent du quinzième jour du mois un jour de repos, de banquets et de fête.
19 That is why the rural Jews, who dwell in villages, celebrate the fourteenth of the month of Adar as a day of rejoicing and feasting, a holiday on which they send gifts of food to one another.	19 C’est pour cela que les Juifs qui habitent la campagne ou les villes non fortifiées, font du quatorzième jour du mois d’Adar, un jour de réjouissance, de banquets et de fête; chacun envoie à cette occasion, des cadeaux à son prochain.
20 Mordecai recorded these events and sent letters to all the Jews, both near and far, in all the provinces of King Ahasuerus.	20 Mardochée mit tout cela par écrit et envoya des lettres à tous les Juifs des différentes provinces d’Assuérus, aux plus proches comme aux plus lointains.
21 He ordered them to celebrate every year both the fourteenth and the fifteenth of the month of Adar	21 Il leur ordonnait de célébrer chaque année le quatorzième et le quinzième jour du mois d’Adar.
22 as the days on which the Jews obtained rest from their enemies and as the month which was turned for them from sorrow into joy, from mourning into festivity. They were to observe these days with feasting and gladness, sending food to one another and gifts to the poor.	22 Car en ces jours les Juifs s’étaient enfin débarrassés de leurs ennemis; en ce mois les larmes avaient fait place à la joie et le deuil à la fête. Ils devaient en ces jours organiser des banquets et des réjouissances, s’envoyer des cadeaux les uns aux autres et faire des offrandes pour les pauvres.
23 The Jews took upon themselves for the future this observance which they instituted at the written direction of Mordecai.	23 Les Juifs firent passer dans la coutume ce qu’ils avaient fait ces jours-là, comme Mardochée le leur avait ordonné.
24 Haman, son of Hammedatha the Agagite, the foe of all the Jews, had planned to destroy them and had cast the pur, or lot, for the time of their defeat and destruction.	24 Aman, fils de Hamdata, de la race d’Agag, l’ennemi des Juifs, avait fait le projet de les exterminer; il avait jeté le Pour, c’est-à-dire le sort, pour les détruire et les massacrer,
25 Yet, when Esther entered the royal presence, the king ordered in writing that the wicked plan Haman had devised against the Jews should instead be turned against Haman and that he and his sons should be hanged on gibbets.	25 mais lorsque le roi l’apprit, il ordonna par un décret de faire retomber sur la tête du coupable son mauvais dessein contre les Juifs, et de le pendre avec ses fils à la potence.
26 And so these days have been named Purim after the word pur. Thus, because of all that was contained in this letter, and because of what they had witnessed and experienced in this affair,	26 À cause du mot Pour, on appelle ces jours, les Pourim. C’est pourquoi à la suite de la lettre du roi, de ce qu’ils avaient vu et de ce qui leur était arrivé,
27 the Jews established and took upon themselves, their descendants, and all who should join them, the inviolable obligation of celebrating these two days every year in the manner prescribed by this letter, and at the time appointed.	27 les Juifs établirent cette règle pour eux, pour leurs descendants et pour tous ceux qui se joindraient à eux: ils célébreraient chaque année à la date fixée, sans y manquer, ces deux jours, selon la règle prescrite.
28 These days were to be commemorated and kept in every generation, by every clan, in every province, and in every city. These days of Purim were never to fall into disuse among the Jews, nor into oblivion among their descendants.	28 Chaque génération, chaque clan, chaque province, chaque ville, devait rappeler et célébrer ces deux jours, pour que les Juifs ne les oublient jamais, pour que leur souvenir ne soit jamais effacé.
29 Queen Esther, daughter of Abihail and of Mordecai the Jew, wrote to confirm with full authority this second letter about Purim,	29 La reine Esther, fille d’Abihayil, et le Juif Mardochée, apportèrent l’appui de leur autorité à cette seconde lettre concernant les Pourim.
30 when Mordecai sent documents concerning peace and security to all the Jews in the hundred and twenty-seven provinces of Ahasuerus' kingdom.	30 On envoya des lettres à tous les Juifs des 127 provinces du royaume d’Assuérus, avec des paroles de paix et d’amitié,
31 Thus were established, for their appointed time, these days of Purim which Mordecai the Jew and Queen Esther had designated for the Jews, just as they had previously enjoined upon themselves and upon their race the duty of fasting and supplication.	31 pour confirmer ces jours des Pourim, pour en rappeler la date fixée par Mardochée, le Juif, et la reine Esther, les règles établies pour eux et pour leurs descendants, ainsi que tout ce qui concerne les jeûnes et les lamentations.
32 The command of Esther confirmed these prescriptions for Purim and was recorded in the book.	32 Le décret d’Esther qui confirmait l’institution des Pourim fut noté dans un livre.
