Thus all Israel was inscribed in its family records which are recorded in the book of the kings of Israel. Now Judah had been carried in captivity to Babylon because of its rebellion.1 Universus ergo Israël dinumeratus est, et summa eorum scripta est in libro regum Israël et Juda : translatique sunt in Babylonem propter delictum suum.
The first to settle again in their cities and dwell there were certain lay Israelites, the priests, the Levites, and the temple slaves.2 Qui autem habitaverunt primi in possessionibus et in urbibus suis : Israël, et sacerdotes, et Levitæ, et Nathinæi.
In Jerusalem lived Judahites and Benjaminites; also Ephraimites and Manassehites.3 Commorati sunt in Jerusalem de filiis Juda, et de filiis Benjamin, de filiis quoque Ephraim, et Manasse.

Their kindred of various families were nine hundred and fifty-six. All those named were heads of their ancestral houses.9 et fratres eorum per familias suas, nongenti quinquaginta sex. Omnes hi principes cognationum per domos patrum suorum.
Among the priests were Jedaiah; Jehoiarib; Jachin;10 De sacerdotibus autem : Jedaia, Jojarib, et Jachin :

Previously they had stood guard at the king's gate on the east side; now they became gatekeepers for the encampments of the Levites.18 usque ad illud tempus, in porta regis ad orientem, observabant per vices suas de filiis Levi.
Shallum, son of Kore, son of Ebiasaph, a descendant of Korah, and his brethren of the same ancestral house of the Korahites had as their assigned task the guarding of the threshold of the tent, just as their fathers had guarded the entrance to the encampment of the LORD.19 Sellum vero filius Core filii Abiasaph, filii Core, cum fratribus suis, et domo patris sui, hi sunt Coritæ super opera ministerii, custodes vestibulorum tabernaculi : et familiæ eorum per vices castrorum Domini custodientes introitum.

The gatekeepers were stationed at the four sides, to the east, the west, the north, and the south.24 Per quatuor ventos erant ostiarii : id est, ad orientem, et ad occidentem, et ad aquilonem, et ad austrum.

At night they lodged about the house of God, for it was in their charge and they had the duty of opening it each morning.27 Per gyrum quoque templi Domini morabantur in custodiis suis : ut cum tempus fuisset, ipsi mane aperirent fores.
Some of them had charge of the liturgical equipment, tallying it as it was brought in and taken out.28 De horum genere erant et super vasa ministerii : ad numerum enim et inferebantur vasa, et efferebantur.
Others were appointed to take care of the utensils and all the sacred vessels, as well as the fine flour, the wine, the oil, the frankincense, and the spices.29 De ipsis et qui credita habebant utensilia sanctuarii, præerant similæ, et vino, et oleo, et thuri, et aromatibus.
It was the sons of priests, however, who mixed the spiced ointments.30 Filii autem sacerdotum unguenta ex aromatibus conficiebant.

These were the chanters and the gatekeepers, family heads over the Levites. They stayed in the chambers when free of duty, for day and night they had to be ready for service.33 Hi sunt principes cantorum per familias Levitarum, qui in exedris morabantur, ut die ac nocte jugiter suo ministerio deservirent.
