NEW AMERICAN BIBLEKING JAMES BIBLE
The man had relations with his wife Eve, and she conceived and bore Cain, saying, "I have produced a man with the help of the LORD."1 And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD.
Next she bore his brother Abel. Abel became a keeper of flocks, and Cain a tiller of the soil.2 And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.
In the course of time Cain brought an offering to the LORD from the fruit of the soil,3 And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD.
while Abel, for his part, brought one of the best firstlings of his flock. The LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering,4 And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering:
but on Cain and his offering he did not. Cain greatly resented this and was crestfallen.5 But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.
So the LORD said to Cain: "Why are you so resentful and crestfallen?6 And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen?
If you do well, you can hold up your head; but if not, sin is a demon lurking at the door: his urge is toward you, yet you can be his master."7 If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.
Cain said to his brother Abel, "Let us go out in the field." When they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.8 And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.
Then the LORD asked Cain, "Where is your brother Abel?" He answered, "I do not know. Am I my brother's keeper?"9 And the LORD said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother's keeper?
The LORD then said: "What have you done! Listen: your brother's blood cries out to me from the soil!10 And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground.
Therefore you shall be banned from the soil that opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand.11 And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand;
If you till the soil, it shall no longer give you its produce. You shall become a restless wanderer on the earth."12 When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth.
Cain said to the LORD: "My punishment is too great to bear.13 And Cain said unto the LORD, My punishment is greater than I can bear.
Since you have now banished me from the soil, and I must avoid your presence and become a restless wanderer on the earth, anyone may kill me at sight."14 Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that every one that findeth me shall slay me.
Not so!" the LORD said to him. "If anyone kills Cain, Cain shall be avenged sevenfold." So the LORD put a mark on Cain, lest anyone should kill him at sight.15 And the LORD said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him.
Cain then left the LORD'S presence and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden.16 And Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.
Cain had relations with his wife, and she conceived and bore Enoch. Cain also became the founder of a city, which he named after his son Enoch.17 And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch.
To Enoch was born Irad, and Irad became the father of Mehujael; Mehujael became the father of Methusael, and Methusael became the father of Lamech.18 And unto Enoch was born Irad: and Irad begat Mehujael: and Mehujael begat Methusael: and Methusael begat Lamech.
Lamech took two wives; the name of the first was Adah, and the name of the second Zillah.19 And Lamech took unto him two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah.
Adah gave birth to Jabal, the ancestor of all who dwell in tents and keep cattle.20 And Adah bare Jabal: he was the father of such as dwell in tents, and of such as have cattle.
His brother's name was Jubal; he was the ancestor of all who play the lyre and the pipe.21 And his brother's name was Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle the harp and organ.
Zillah, on her part, gave birth to Tubalcain, the ancestor of all who forge instruments of bronze and iron. The sister of Tubalcain was Naamah.22 And Zillah, she also bare Tubal-cain, an instructer of every artificer in brass and iron: and the sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah.
Lamech said to his wives: "Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; wives of Lamech, listen to my utterance: I have killed a man for wounding me, a boy for bruising me.23 And Lamech said unto his wives, Adah and Zillah, Hear my voice; ye wives of Lamech, hearken unto my speech: for I have slain a man to my wounding, and a young man to my hurt.
If Cain is avenged sevenfold, then Lamech seventy-sevenfold."24 If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold.
Adam again had relations with his wife, and she gave birth to a son whom she called Seth. "God has granted me more offspring in place of Abel," she said, "because Cain slew him."25 And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.
To Seth, in turn, a son was born, and he named him Enosh. At that time men began to invoke the LORD by name.26 And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the LORD.
