NEW AMERICAN BIBLEDOUAI-RHEIMS
The man had relations with his wife Eve, and she conceived and bore Cain, saying, "I have produced a man with the help of the LORD."1 And Adam knew Eve his wife: who conceived and brought forth Cain, saying: I have gotten a man through God.
Next she bore his brother Abel. Abel became a keeper of flocks, and Cain a tiller of the soil.2 And again she brought forth his brother Abel. And Abel was a shepherd, and Cain a husbandman.
In the course of time Cain brought an offering to the LORD from the fruit of the soil,3 And it came to pass after many days, that Cain offered, of the fruits of the earth, gifts to the Lord.
while Abel, for his part, brought one of the best firstlings of his flock. The LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering,4 Abel also offered of the firstlings of his flock, and of their fat: and the Lord had respect to Abel, and to his offerings.
but on Cain and his offering he did not. Cain greatly resented this and was crestfallen.5 But to Cain and his offerings he had no respect: and Cain was exceedingly angry, and his countenance fell.
So the LORD said to Cain: "Why are you so resentful and crestfallen?6 And the Lord said to him: Why art thou angry? and why is thy countenance fallen?
If you do well, you can hold up your head; but if not, sin is a demon lurking at the door: his urge is toward you, yet you can be his master."7 If thou do well, shalt thou not receive? but if ill, shall not sin forthwith be present at the door? but the lust thereof shall be under thee, and thou shalt have dominion over it.
Cain said to his brother Abel, "Let us go out in the field." When they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.8 And Cain said to Abel his brother: Let us go forth abroad. And when they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel, and slew him.
Then the LORD asked Cain, "Where is your brother Abel?" He answered, "I do not know. Am I my brother's keeper?"9 And the Lord said to Cain: Where is thy brother Abel? And he answered, I know not: am I my brother's keeper?
The LORD then said: "What have you done! Listen: your brother's blood cries out to me from the soil!10 And he said to him: What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth to me from the earth.
Therefore you shall be banned from the soil that opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand.11 Now, therefore, cursed shalt thou be upon the earth, which hath opened her mouth and received the blood of thy brother at thy hand,
If you till the soil, it shall no longer give you its produce. You shall become a restless wanderer on the earth."12 When thou shalt till it, it shall not yield to thee its fruit: a fugitive and vagabond shalt thou be upon the earth.
Cain said to the LORD: "My punishment is too great to bear.13 And Cain said to the Lord: My iniquity is greater than that I may deserve pardon.
Since you have now banished me from the soil, and I must avoid your presence and become a restless wanderer on the earth, anyone may kill me at sight."14 Behold thou dost cast me out this day from the face of the earth, and I shall be hidden from thy face, and I shall be a vagabond and a fugitive on the earth: everyone, therefore, that findeth me, shall kill me.
Not so!" the LORD said to him. "If anyone kills Cain, Cain shall be avenged sevenfold." So the LORD put a mark on Cain, lest anyone should kill him at sight.15 And the Lord said to him: No, it shall not be so: but whosoever shall kill Cain, shall be punished sevenfold. And the Lord set a mark upon Cain, that whosoever found him should not kill him.
Cain then left the LORD'S presence and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden.16 And Cain went out from the face of the Lord, and dwelt as a fugitive on the earth, at the east side of Eden.
Cain had relations with his wife, and she conceived and bore Enoch. Cain also became the founder of a city, which he named after his son Enoch.17 And Cain knew his wife, and she conceived, and brought forth Henoch: and he built a city, and called the name thereof by the name of his son Henoch.
To Enoch was born Irad, and Irad became the father of Mehujael; Mehujael became the father of Methusael, and Methusael became the father of Lamech.18 And Henoch begot Irad, and Irad begot Maviael, and Maviael begot Mathusael, and Mathusael begot Lamech:
Lamech took two wives; the name of the first was Adah, and the name of the second Zillah.19 Who took two wives: the name of the one was Ada, and the name of the other was Sella.
Adah gave birth to Jabal, the ancestor of all who dwell in tents and keep cattle.20 And Ada brought forth Jabel: who was the father of such as dwell in tents, and of herdsmen.
His brother's name was Jubal; he was the ancestor of all who play the lyre and the pipe.21 And his brother's name was Jubal; he was the father of them that play upon the harp and the organs.
Zillah, on her part, gave birth to Tubalcain, the ancestor of all who forge instruments of bronze and iron. The sister of Tubalcain was Naamah.22 Sella also brought forth Tubalcain, who was a hammerer and artificer in every work of brass and iron. And the sister of Tubalcain was Noema.
Lamech said to his wives: "Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; wives of Lamech, listen to my utterance: I have killed a man for wounding me, a boy for bruising me.23 And Lamech said to his wives Ada and Sell: Hear my voice, ye wives of Lamech, hearken to my speech: for I have slain a man to the wounding of myself, and a stripling to my own bruising.
If Cain is avenged sevenfold, then Lamech seventy-sevenfold."24 Sevenfold vengeance shall be taken for Cain: but for Lamech seventy times sevenfold.
Adam again had relations with his wife, and she gave birth to a son whom she called Seth. "God has granted me more offspring in place of Abel," she said, "because Cain slew him."25 Adam also knew his wife again: and she brought forth a son, and called his name Seth, saying: God hath given me another seed, for Abel whom Cain slew.
To Seth, in turn, a son was born, and he named him Enosh. At that time men began to invoke the LORD by name.26 But to Seth also was born a son, whom he called Enos; this man began to call upon the name of the Lord.
