1 About that time Judah parted from his brothers and pitched his tent near a certain Adullamite named Hirah.	1 In quel tempo, Giuda si separò dai suoi fratelli e rizzò la sua tenda presso un uomo di Adullam, di nome Chira.
2 There he met the daughter of a Canaanite named Shua, married her, and had relations with her.	2 Qui Giuda vide la figlia di un uomo Cananeo, il quale si chiamava Sua; se la prese in moglie e si unì a lei.
3 She conceived and bore a son, whom she named Er.	3 Essa concepì e partorì un figlio, che egli chiamò Er.
4 Again she conceived and bore a son, whom she named Onan.	4 Poi concepì ancora e partorì un figlio, che chiamò Onan.
5 Then she bore still another son, whom she named Shelah. They were in Chezib when he was born.	5 Ancora un'altra volta partorì un figlio, che chiamò Sela. Essa si trovava in Chezib, quando lo partorì.
6 Judah got a wife named Tamar for his first-born, Er.	6 Giuda prese una moglie per il suo primogenito Er, la quale si chiamava Tamar.
7 But Er, Judah's first-born, greatly offended the LORD; so the LORD took his life.	7 Ma Er, il primogenito di Giuda, era perverso agli occhi del Signore, e il Signore lo fece morire.
8 Then Judah said to Onan, "Unite with your brother's widow, in fulfillment of your duty as brother-in-law, and thus preserve your brother's line."	8 Allora Giuda disse a Onan: "Accostati alla moglie di tuo fratello, fa' il dovere di cognato nei suoi riguardi e fa' sussistere così una posterità per tuo fratello".
9 Onan, however, knew that the descendants would not be counted as his; so whenever he had relations with his brother's widow, he wasted his seed on the ground, to avoid contributing offspring for his brother.	9 Ma Onan, sapendo che la prole non sarebbe stata sua, ogni volta che si univa alla moglie di suo fratello, disperdeva per terra, per non dare una posterità a suo fratello.
10 What he did greatly offended the LORD, and the LORD took his life too.	10 Ciò ch'egli faceva dispiacque agli occhi del Signore, che fece morire anche lui.
11 Thereupon Judah said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, "Stay as a widow in your father's house until my son Shelah grows up"--for he feared that Shelah also might die like his brothers. So Tamar went to live in her father's house.	11 Allora Giuda disse alla nuora Tamar: "Ritorna a casa di tuo padre come vedova, fin quando mio figlio Sela diverrà grande". Perché temeva che anche questi morisse come gli altri fratelli! Così Tamar se ne andò e ritornò alla casa di suo padre.
12 Years passed, and Judah's wife, the daughter of Shua, died. After Judah completed the period of mourning, he went up to Timnah for the shearing of his sheep, in company with his friend Hirah the Adullamite.	12 Passarono molti giorni e morì la figlia di Sua, la moglie di Giuda. Quando Giuda ebbe finito il lutto, salì da quelli che tosavano il suo gregge a Timna, e con lui vi era Chira, il suo amico di Adullam.
13 When Tamar was told that her father-in-law was on his way up to Timnah to shear his sheep,	13 Ne fu informata Tamar con questi termini: "Ecco che il tuo suocero sale a Timna per la tosatura del suo gregge".
14 she took off her widow's garb, veiled her face by covering herself with a shawl, and sat down at the entrance to Enaim, which is on the way to Timnah; for she was aware that, although Shelah was now grown up, she had not been given to him in marriage.	14 Allora Tamar svestì i suoi abiti vedovili, si coprì con un velo, si profumò, poi si pose seduta alla porta di Enaim, che è sulla strada verso Timna. Aveva visto infatti che Sela era ormai diventato adulto, ma lei non gli era stata data in moglie.
15 When Judah saw her, he mistook her for a harlot, since she had covered her face.	15 Giuda la vide e la credette una meretrice, perché essa si era coperta la faccia.
16 So he went over to her at the roadside, and not realizing that she was his daughter-in-law, he said, "Come, let me have intercourse with you." She replied, "What will you pay me for letting you have intercourse with me?"	16 Egli deviò il cammino verso di lei e disse: "Suvvia, permetti che io mi accosti a te!". Non sapeva infatti che quella fosse la sua nuora. Essa disse: "Che cosa mi darai per accostarti a me?".
17 He answered, "I will send you a kid from the flock." "Very well," she said, "provided you leave a pledge until you send it."	17 Rispose: "Io ti manderò un capretto del gregge". Essa riprese: "Se tu mi dai un pegno fin quando me lo manderai...".
18 Judah asked, "What pledge am I to give to you?" She answered, "Your seal and cord, and the staff you carry." So he gave them to her and had intercourse with her, and she conceived by him.	18 Egli disse: "Qual è il pegno che ti devo dare?". Rispose: "Il tuo sigillo, il tuo cordone e il bastone che hai in mano". Giuda glieli diede, le si accostò, ed essa concepì da lui.
19 When she went away, she took off her shawl and put on her widow's garb again.	19 Poi essa si levò e se ne andò; si tolse di dosso il velo e si rivestì dei suoi abiti vedovili.
20 Judah sent the kid by his friend the Adullamite to recover the pledge from the woman; but he could not find her.	20 Giuda poi mandò il capretto per mezzo del suo amico di Adullam, per riprendere il pegno dalle mani di quella donna, ma quello non la trovò.
21 So he asked the men of the place, "Where is the temple prostitute, the one by the roadside in Enaim?" But they answered, "There has never been a temple prostitute here."	21 Domandò agli uomini di quel luogo: "Dov'è quella prostituta che stava in Enaim sulla strada?". Essi risposero: "Non c'è stata qui nessuna prostituta".
22 He went back to Judah and told him, "I could not find her; and besides, the men of the place said there was no temple prostitute there."	22 Così tornò da Giuda e disse: "Non l'ho trovata, e anche gli uomini del luogo dicevano: "Non c'è stata qui nessuna prostituta".
23 "Let her keep the things," Judah replied; "otherwise we shall become a laughingstock. After all, I did send her the kid, even though you were unable to find her."	23 Allora Giuda disse: "Si tenga per sé il pegno e noi non si sia nel disprezzo. Vedi bene che le ho mandato questo capretto, ma tu non l'hai trovata".
24 About three months later, Judah was told that his daughter-in-law Tamar had played the harlot and was then with child from her harlotry. "Bring her out," cried Judah; "she shall be burned."	24 Or avvenne, circa tre mesi dopo, che fu portata a Giuda una notizia in questi termini: "Si è prostituita tua nuora Tamar, ed anzi è incinta in conseguenza della sua prostituzione". Giuda rispose: "Conducetela fuori e sia bruciata!".
25 But as they were bringing her out, she sent word to her father-in-law, "It is by the man to whom these things belong that I am with child. Please verify," she added, "whose seal and cord and whose staff these are."	25 Mentre la si faceva uscire, essa mandò a dire al suocero: "L'uomo, a cui appartengono questi oggetti, mi ha reso incinta". E aggiunse: "Riscontra, di grazia, di chi siano questo sigillo, questi cordoni e questo bastone".
26 Judah recognized them and said, "She is more in the right than I am, since I did not give her to my son Shelah." But he had no further relations with her.	26 Allora Giuda li riconobbe e disse: "Essa è più giusta di me. Infatti è perché io non l'ho data al mio figlio Sela". E non ebbe più rapporti con lei.
27 When the time of her delivery came, she was found to have twins in her womb.	27 Quando essa fu giunta al momento di partorire, ecco che aveva nel ventre due gemelli.
28 While she was giving birth, one infant put out his hand; and the midwife, taking a crimson thread, tied it on his hand, to note that this one came out first.	28 Durante il parto uno di loro mise fuori una mano e la levatrice prese un filo scarlatto e lo legò attorno a quella mano, dicendo: "E' questo che è uscito per primo".
29 But as he withdrew his hand, his brother came out; and she said, "What a breach you have made for yourself!" So he was called Perez.	29 Ma quando questo ritirò la sua mano, ecco che uscì suo fratello. Allora essa disse: "Come ti sei aperta una breccia?" e lo si chiamò Perez.
30 Afterward his brother came out; he was called Zerah.	30 Poi uscì suo fratello, che aveva il filo scarlatto attorno alla mano e lo si chiamò Zerach.
