Genesis 38

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	JERUSALEM
1 About that time Judah parted from his brothers and pitched his tent near a certain Adullamite named Hirah.	1 Il arriva, vers ce temps-là, que Juda se sépara de ses frères et se rendit chez un homme d'Adullamqui se nommait Hira.
2 There he met the daughter of a Canaanite named Shua, married her, and had relations with her.	2 Là, Juda vit la fille d'un Cananéen qui se nommait Shua, il la prit pour femme et s'unit à elle.
3 She conceived and bore a son, whom she named Er.	3 Celle-ci conçut et enfanta un fils, qu'elle appela Er.
4 Again she conceived and bore a son, whom she named Onan.	4 De nouveau, elle conçut et enfanta un fils, qu'elle appela Onân.
5 Then she bore still another son, whom she named Shelah. They were in Chezib when he was born.	5 Encore une fois, elle enfanta un fils, qu'elle appela Shéla; elle se trouvait à Kezib quand elle luidonna naissance.
6 Judah got a wife named Tamar for his first-born, Er.	6 Juda prit une femme pour son premier-né Er; elle se nommait Tamar.
7 But Er, Judah's first-born, greatly offended the LORD; so the LORD took his life.	7 Mais Er, premier-né de Juda, déplut à Yahvé, qui le fit mourir.
8 Then Judah said to Onan, "Unite with your brother's widow, in fulfillment of your duty as brother-in-law, and thus preserve your brother's line."	8 Alors Juda dit à Onân: "Va vers la femme de ton frère, remplis avec elle ton devoir de beau-frère etassure une postérité à ton frère."
9 Onan, however, knew that the descendants would not be counted as his; so whenever he had relations with his brother's widow, he wasted his seed on the ground, to avoid contributing offspring for his brother.	9 Cependant Onân savait que la postérité ne serait pas sienne et, chaque fois qu'il s'unissait à lafemme de son frère, il laissait perdre à terre pour ne pas donner une postérité à son frère.
10 What he did greatly offended the LORD, and the LORD took his life too.	10 Ce qu'il faisait déplut à Yahvé, qui le fit mourir lui aussi.
11 Thereupon Judah said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, "Stay as a widow in your father's house until my son Shelah grows up"--for he feared that Shelah also might die like his brothers. So Tamar went to live in her father's house.	11 Alors Juda dit à sa belle-fille Tamar: "Retourne comme veuve chez ton père, en attendant quegrandisse mon fils Shéla." Il se disait: "Il ne faut pas que celui-là meure comme ses frères." Tamar s'en retournadonc chez son père.
12 Years passed, and Judah's wife, the daughter of Shua, died. After Judah completed the period of mourning, he went up to Timnah for the shearing of his sheep, in company with his friend Hirah the Adullamite.	12 Bien des jours passèrent et la fille de Shua, la femme de Juda, mourut. Lorsque Juda fut consolé,il monta à Timna pour la tonte de ses brebis, lui et Hira, son ami d'Adullam.
13 When Tamar was told that her father-in-law was on his way up to Timnah to shear his sheep,	13 On avertit Tamar: "Voici, lui dit-on, que ton beau-père monte à Timna pour tondre ses brebis."
14 she took off her widow's garb, veiled her face by covering herself with a shawl, and sat down at the entrance to Enaim, which is on the way to Timnah; for she was aware that, although Shelah was now grown up, she had not been given to him in marriage.	14 Alors, elle quitta ses vêtements de veuve, elle se couvrit d'un voile, s'enveloppa et s'assit à l'entréed'Enayim, qui est sur le chemin de Timna. Elle voyait bien que Shéla était devenu grand et qu'elle ne lui avaitpas été donnée pour femme.
15 When Judah saw her, he mistook her for a harlot, since she had covered her face.	15 Juda l'aperçut et la prit pour une prostituée, car elle s'était voilé le visage.
16 So he went over to her at the roadside, and not realizing that she was his daughter-in-law, he said, "Come, let me have intercourse with you." She replied, "What will you pay me for letting you have intercourse with me?"	16 Il se dirigea vers elle sur le chemin et dit: "Laisse, que j'aille avec toi!" Il ne savait pas que c'étaitsabelle-fille. Mais elle demanda: "Que me donneras-tu pour aller avec moi?"
17 He answered, "I will send you a kid from the flock." "Very well," she said, "provided you leave a pledge until you send it."	17 Il répondit: "Je t'enverrai un chevreau du troupeau." Mais elle reprit: "Oui, si tu me donnes ungage en attendant que tu l'envoies!"
18 Judah asked, "What pledge am I to give to you?" She answered, "Your seal and cord, and the staff you carry." So he gave them to her and had intercourse with her, and she conceived by him.	18 Il demanda: "Quel gage te donnerai-je?" Et elle répondit: "Ton sceau et ton cordon et la canne quetu as à la main." Il les lui donna et alla avec elle, qui devint enceinte de lui.
19 When she went away, she took off her shawl and put on her widow's garb again.	19 Elle se leva, partit, enleva son voile et reprit ses vêtements de veuve.
20 Judah sent the kid by his friend the Adullamite to recover the pledge from the woman; but he could not find her.	20 Juda envoya le chevreau par l'intermédiaire de son ami d'Adullam, pour reprendre les gages desmains de la femme, mais celui-ci ne la retrouva pas.
21 So he asked the men of the place, "Where is the temple prostitute, the one by the roadside in Enaim?" But they answered, "There has never been a temple prostitute here."	21 Il demanda aux gens du lieu: "Où est cette prostituée qui était à Enayim, sur le chemin?" Mais ilsrépondirent: "Il n'y a jamais eu là de prostituée!"
22 He went back to Judah and told him, "I could not find her; and besides, the men of the place said there was no temple prostitute there."	22 Il revint donc auprès de Juda et dit: "Je ne l'ai pas retrouvée. Et même, les gens du lieu m'ont ditqu'il n'y avait jamais eu là de prostituée."
23 "Let her keep the things," Judah replied; "otherwise we shall become a laughingstock. After all, I did send her the kid, even though you were unable to find her."	23 Juda reprit: "Qu'elle garde tout: il ne faut pas qu'on se moque de nous, mais j'ai bien envoyé lechevreau que voici, et toi, tu ne l'as pas retrouvée."
24 About three months later, Judah was told that his daughter-in-law Tamar had played the harlot and was then with child from her harlotry. "Bring her out," cried Judah; "she shall be burned."	24 Environ trois mois après, on avertit Juda: "Ta belle-fille Tamar, lui dit-on, s'est prostituée, elle estmême enceinte par suite de son inconduite." Alors Juda ordonna: "Qu'elle soit amenée dehors et brûlée vive!"
25 But as they were bringing her out, she sent word to her father-in-law, "It is by the man to whom these things belong that I am with child. Please verify," she added, "whose seal and cord and whose staff these are."	25 Mais, comme on l'amenait, elle envoya dire à son beau-père:"C'est de l'homme à qui appartientcela que je suis enceinte. Reconnais donc, dit-elle, à qui appartient ce sceau, ce cordon et cette canne."
26 Judah recognized them and said, "She is more in the right than I am, since I did not give her to my son Shelah." But he had no further relations with her.	26 Juda les reconnut et dit: "Elle est plus juste que moi. C'est qu'en effet je ne lui avait pas donnémon fils Shéla." Et il n'eut plus de rapports avec elle.
27 When the time of her delivery came, she was found to have twins in her womb.	27 Lorsque vint le temps de ses couches, il apparut qu'elle avait dans son sein des jumeaux.
28 While she was giving birth, one infant put out his hand; and the midwife, taking a crimson thread, tied it on his hand, to note that this one came out first.	28 Pendant l'accouchement, l'un d'eux tendit la main et la sage-femme la saisit et y attacha un filécarlate, en disant:"C'est celui-là qui est sorti le premier."
29 But as he withdrew his hand, his brother came out; and she said, "What a breach you have made for yourself!" So he was called Perez.	29 Mais il advint qu'il retira sa main et ce fut son frère quisortit. Alors elle dit: "Comme tu t'es ouvertune brèche!" Eton l'appela Pérèç.
30 Afterward his brother came out; he was called Zerah.	30 Ensuite sortit son frère, qui avait le fil écarlate à la main, et on l'appela Zérah.
