1 And the LORD said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Bethlehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons.	1 - Il Signore disse a Samuele: «Fino a quando piangerai Saul, mentre io l'ho rigettato, perchè non regni sopra Israele? Riempi il tuo corno d'olio e vieni, che ti manderò da Isai il Betlemita, chè tra i suoi figli mi son provveduto un re».
2 And Samuel said, How can I go? if Saul hear it, he Will kill me. And the LORD said, Take an heifer with thee, and say, I am come to sacrifice to the LORD.	2 Disse Samuele: «Come andrò io? Saul lo verrà a sapere e mi ucciderà». Soggiunse il Signore: «Prenderai teco un vitello del tuo armento e dirai: - Venni per sacrificare al Signore. -
3 And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will shew thee what thou shalt do: and thou shalt anoint unto me him whom I name unto thee.	3 Inviterai poscia Isai al sacrificio ed io ti mostrerò il da farsi; tu poi ungerai quegli che ti mostrerò».
4 And Samuel did that which the LORD spake, and came to Bethlehem. And the elders of the town trembled at his coming, and said, Comest thou peaceably?	4 Samuele adunque fece quello che il Signore gli aveva detto; venne a Betleem, e gli anziani della città pieni di stupore gli mossero incontro a chiedergli: «È pacifica la tua venuta?».
5 And he said, Peaceably: I am come to sacrifice unto the LORD: sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice. And he sanctified Jesse and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice.	5 «Pacifica», rispose «venni per sacrificare al Signore; santificatevi e venite meco affinchè io sacrifichi». Santificò dunque Isai e i suoi figliuoli e li invitò al sacrificio.
6 And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely the LORD's anointed is before him.	6 Com'essi furono entrati, egli vide Eliab e si domandò: «Non è forse dinanzi al Signore il suo Unto?».
7 But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.	7 Ma il Signore disse a Samuele: «Non badare al suo volto o all'altezza della sua statura poichè io ho lasciato da parte costui. Chè io giudico non secondo lo sguardo dell'uomo, perchè mentre l'uomo guarda all'apparenza, il Signore guarda al cuore».
8 Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, Neither hath the LORD chosen this.	8 Isai allora chiamò Abimadab e lo condusse innanzi a Samuele, il quale disse: «Neppur costui è l'eletto del Signore».
9 Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said, Neither hath the LORD chosen this.	9 Isai quindi gli presentò Samma e di lui Samuele disse: «Neanche costui fu scelto dal Signore».
10 Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, The LORD hath not chosen these.	10 Isai fece passare così dinanzi a Samuele sette dei suoi figli, ma Samuele gli disse: «Il Signore non s'è scelto alcuno di questi».
11 And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither.	11 domandò poi ad Isai: «Son questi tutti i tuoi figliuoli?». Rispose Isai: «Rimane ancora il più piccolo che sta a pascere le pecore»; e Samuele gli disse: «Mandalo a prendere, poichè non ci porremo a mangiare prima che arrivi».
12 And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the LORD said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he.	12 Lo mandò dunque a cercare e lo fece venire. Era egli rosso, di bell'aspetto e di faccia avvenente. Disse allora il Signore: «Levati, ungilo, poichè è desso».
13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.	13 Prese adunque Samuele il corno d'olio e unse Davide in mezzo ai suoi fratelli e da quel giorno in poi lo spirito del Signore scese su Davide. Poi Samuele si levò e se ne andò a Ramata.
14 But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him.	14 Ma lo spirito del Signore si ritirò da Saul, che era agitato da uno spirito maligno mandato dal Signore.
15 And Saul's servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee.	15 Dissero a Saul i suoi servi: «Ecco che uno spirito maligno che vien da Dio ti conturba.
16 Let our lord now command thy servants, which are before thee, to seek out a man, who is a cunning player on an harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well.	16 Lo comandi il signor nostro, e i tuoi servi che ti stanno dinanzi andranno in cerca di un uomo che sappia sonare bene l'arpa, affinchè quando lo spirito cattivo venuto da Dio ti assalirà egli suoni colla sua mano e tu ne senta sollievo».
17 And Saul said unto his servants, Provide me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me.	17 Saul rispose ai suoi servi: «Procuratemi dunque uno che sappia sonare bene e conducetelo da me».
18 Then answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, that is cunning in playing, and a mighty valiant man, and a man of war, and prudent in matters, and a comely person, and the LORD is with him.	18 In risposta uno dei servi soggiunse: «Ho visto un Betlemita, un figlio di Isai che sa appunto sonare bene, un uomo di grandissima forza, un guerriero, prudente nel parlare e bello d'aspetto e col quale è il Signore».
19 Wherefore Saul sent messengers unto Jesse, and said, Send me David thy son, which is with the sheep.	19 Mandò allora Saul dei messi da Isai a dirgli: «Mandami tuo figlio Davide che trovasi a pascolare il gregge».
20 And Jesse took an ass laden with bread, and a bottle of wine, and a kid, and sent them by David his son unto Saul.	20 Isai prese perciò un asino carico di pane, un otre di vino e un capretto e mandò il tutto per mano del figliuol suo Davide a Saul.
21 And David came to Saul, and stood before him: and he loved him greatly; and he became his armourbearer.	21 E venne Davide da Saul e si presentò dinanzi a lui. Saul lo amò profondamente e lo fece suo scudiero.
22 And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, Let David, I pray thee, stand before me; for he hath found favour in my sight.	22 Perciò Saul mandò a dire ad Isai: «Resti Davide al mio servizio, poichè ha trovato grazia agli occhi miei».
23 And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.	23 E così, ogni qualvolta il cattivo spirito venuto da Dio investiva Saul, Davide prendeva l'arpa e si metteva a sonare; Saul si calmava e stava meglio, poichè lo spirito maligno si ritirava da lui e lo lasciava in pace.
