1 And the LORD said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Bethlehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons.	1 Azt mondta azért az Úr Sámuelnek: »Meddig bánkódsz még Saul miatt, noha én elvetettem őt, hogy ne uralkodjon Izraelen? Töltsd meg szarudat olajjal, s gyere, hadd küldjelek a betlehemi Izájhoz, mert annak a fiai közül szemeltem ki magamnak királyt.«
2 And Samuel said, How can I go? if Saul hear it, he Will kill me. And the LORD said, Take an heifer with thee, and say, I am come to sacrifice to the LORD.	2 Azt mondta erre Sámuel: »Hogyan menjek? Hiszen meghallja Saul és megöl!« Azt mondta erre az Úr: »Vigyél magaddal egy borjút a csordából és mondd: Azért jöttem, hogy véresáldozatot mutassak be az Úrnak.
3 And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will shew thee what thou shalt do: and thou shalt anoint unto me him whom I name unto thee.	3 Izájt pedig hívd meg a véresáldozatra és én majd értésedre adom, hogy mit cselekedj, s kend fel azt, akit majd mutatok neked.«
4 And Samuel did that which the LORD spake, and came to Bethlehem. And the elders of the town trembled at his coming, and said, Comest thou peaceably?	4 Úgy is cselekedett Sámuel, ahogy az Úr azt mondta neki. Amikor megérkezett Betlehembe, elcsodálkoztak a város vénei és eléje mentek és megkérdezték: »Békés-e a jöveteled?«
5 And he said, Peaceably: I am come to sacrifice unto the LORD: sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice. And he sanctified Jesse and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice.	5 Ő azt mondta: »Békés! Azért jöttem, hogy véresáldozatot mutassak be az Úrnak. Tartsatok megszentelődést és gyertek velem, hogy bemutassam a véresáldozatot.« Megszentelődést tartatott tehát Izájjal s fiaival, és meghívta őket a véresáldozatra.
6 And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely the LORD's anointed is before him.	6 Amikor aztán eljöttek, meglátta Eliábot és azt mondta magában: »Nemde máris az Úr előtt áll felkentje?«
7 But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.	7 Ám az Úr azt mondta Sámuelnek: »Ne nézd külsejét, se termete magasságát, mert én elvetettem őt! Én nem aszerint ítélek, amire az ember néz: az ember ugyanis azt nézi, ami látszik, az Úr azonban a szívet tekinti.«
8 Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, Neither hath the LORD chosen this.	8 Erre Izáj odahívta Abinádábot, és őt vezette Sámuel elé. Ám ő azt mondta: »Ezt sem választotta az Úr.«
9 Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said, Neither hath the LORD chosen this.	9 Erre Izáj Simát vitte oda, de őróla is azt mondta: »Ezt sem választotta az Úr.«
10 Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, The LORD hath not chosen these.	10 Hét fiát vezette így oda Izáj Sámuel elé, de Sámuel azt mondta Izájnak: »Ezek közül nem választott az Úr!«
11 And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither.	11 Majd azt mondta Sámuel Izájnak: »Ez az összes fiad?« Ő azt felelte: »Hátra van még a legkisebbik, az a juhokat legelteti.« Azt mondta erre Sámuel Izájnak: »Küldj érte, s hozasd el, mert addig nem telepszünk le, amíg ide nem jön.«
12 And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the LORD said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he.	12 Érte küldött tehát, és elhozatta. Vörös volt, szép szemű és csinos külsejű. Azt mondta ekkor az Úr: »Kelj fel, kend fel, mert ő az!«
13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.	13 Erre Sámuel vette az olajos szarut, s felkente őt testvérei közepette, és ettől a naptól az Úr lelke Dávidra szállt. Sámuel aztán felkelt és elment Ramátába.
14 But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him.	14 Miután Saultól eltávozott az Úr lelke, az Úr egy gonosz lelket bocsátott rá, s az igen gyötörte.
15 And Saul's servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee.	15 Azt mondták azért Saul szolgái uruknak: »Íme, Isten egyik gonosz lelke gyötör téged.
16 Let our lord now command thy servants, which are before thee, to seek out a man, who is a cunning player on an harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well.	16 Adja ki tehát urunk a parancsot, és előtted levő szolgáid keresnek valakit, aki ért a lantpengetéshez, hogy amikor elfog téged az Úrnak az a gonosz lelke, ő pengesse kezével a lantot és megkönnyebbülj.«
17 And Saul said unto his servants, Provide me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me.	17 Azt mondta erre Saul a szolgáinak: »Szerezzetek tehát nekem valakit, aki jól pengeti a lantot, s hozzátok ide hozzám.«
18 Then answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, that is cunning in playing, and a mighty valiant man, and a man of war, and prudent in matters, and a comely person, and the LORD is with him.	18 Megszólalt ekkor egyik legénye és azt mondta: »Íme, én láttam, hogy a betlehemi Izáj egyik fia jól tudja pengetni a lantot, hozzá nagy erejű vitéz, hadra termett ember, értelmes szavú, szép férfi, s az Úr is vele van.«
19 Wherefore Saul sent messengers unto Jesse, and said, Send me David thy son, which is with the sheep.	19 Erre Saul követeket küldött Izájhoz, ezzel az üzenettel: »Küldd hozzám Dávidot, azt a fiadat, aki a legelőn van.«
20 And Jesse took an ass laden with bread, and a bottle of wine, and a kid, and sent them by David his son unto Saul.	20 Erre Izáj vett egy szamarat, megrakta kenyérrel, meg egy korsó bort és egy kecskegödölyét és elküldte Dáviddal, a fiával Saulnak.
21 And David came to Saul, and stood before him: and he loved him greatly; and he became his armourbearer.	21 Dávid el is jutott Saulhoz és szolgálatába állt, aki őt nagyon megszerette és fegyverhordozójává tette.
22 And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, Let David, I pray thee, stand before me; for he hath found favour in my sight.	22 Éppen azért Saul elküldött Izájhoz, s ezt üzente: »Hadd maradjon Dávid a szolgálatomban, mert kedvet talált szememben.«
23 And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.	23 Így aztán valahányszor elfogta Sault az Úrnak az a gonosz lelke, Dávid elővette a lantot, s pengette kezével és Saul felüdült és megkönnyebbedett, mert a gonosz lélek eltávozott tőle.
