KING JAMES BIBLEBIBBIA TINTORI
Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene,1 L'anno decimoquinto dell'impero di Tiberio Cesare, essendo governatore della Giudea Ponzio Pilato, tetrarca di Galilea Erode, tetrarca dell'Iturea e della Traconitide Filippo suo fratello, e tetrarca di Abilene Lisania,
Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.2 sotto i sommi sacerdoti Anna Caifa, la parola di Dio fu diretta a Giovanni figlio di Zaccaria nel deserto.
And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins;3 Ed egli andò per tutta la regione del Giordano, predicando il battesimo di penitenza, in remissione dei peccati:
As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.4 come sta scritto nel libro dei sermoni del profeta Isaia: Voce di colui che grida nel deserto: Preparate la via del Signore, raddrizzate i suoi sentieri.
Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth;5 Ogni valle sarà colmata, ogni monte e collo sarà abbassato, e le vie tortuose saran fatte diritte, e le scabre appianate,
And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.6 ed ogni uomo vedrà la salvezza di Dio.
Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?7 Giovanni dunque diceva alle genti che andavano a lui per farsi battezzare: Razza di vipere, chi vi ha insegnato a fuggire l'ira che vi sovrasta?
Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.8 Fate dunque frutti degni di penitenza, e non vi mettete a dire: Abbiamo per padre Abramo, perchè vi dico: Dio può anche da queste pietre far sorgere dei figli di Abramo.
And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.9 Già la scure è posta alla radice degli alberi; ogni albero adunque che non rende buon frutto sta per essere tagliato e gettato nel fuoco.
And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then?10 E le genti lo interrogavano dicendo: E che dobbiamo fare dunque?
He answereth and saith unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise.11 Ed egli rispondeva loro: Chi ha due tuniche ne dia una a chi non ne ha, e dei cibi faccia altrettanto.
Then came also publicans to be baptized, and said unto him, Master, what shall we do?12 Anche dei pubblicani andarono a farsi battezzare, e gli dissero: Maestro, e noi che faremo?
And he said unto them, Exact no more than that which is appointed you.13 Ed egli rispose loro: Non esigete più di quanto vi è ordinato.
And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages.14 Lo interrogavano anche i soldati dicendo: E noi che dobbiamo fare? E rispose loro: Non vessate alcuno con estorsioni e false denunzie, e contentatevi delle vostre paghe.
And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not;15 Ma stimando il popolo e pensando tutti nel loro cuore che Giovanni fosse il Cristo,
John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:16 Giovanni rispose a tutti dicendo: Quanto a me, io vi battezzo con acqua, ma sta per venire uno che è più forte di me, a cui non son degno di sciogliere il legaccio dei calzari; egli vi battezzerà in Spirito Santo e col fuoco.
Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.17 Egli col suo ventilabro in mano pulirà la sua aia e raccoglierà il frumento nel suo granaio, ma la paglia la brucerà col fuoco inestinguibile.
And many other things in his exhortation preached he unto the people.18 Così e con molte altre esortazioni evangelizzava il popolo.
But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip's wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done,19 Ma Erode tetrarca, essendo stato ripreso da lui, e per Erodiade, moglie di suo fratello, e per tutte le malvagità che aveva fatte,
Added yet this above all, that he shut up John in prison.20 aggiunse alle altre anche questa, di rinchiudere Giovanni in prigione.
Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened,21 Or mentre tutto il popolo si faceva battezzare o Gesù, già battezzato pregava, si aprì il cielo,
And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.22 e discese lo Spirito Santo su di lui in forma corporea, a guisa di colomba, e venne dal cielo una voce: Tu sei il mio Figlio diletto: in te mi son compiaciuto.
